  • The characteristics of radiation impedance for piston source on a spherical baffle are analyzed by algorithms which consists of Finite Element Method (FEM) and Hybrid type Infinite Element Method (HIEM). The results of self-radiation impedance for radiation angle and mutual radiation impedance between piston sources coincided with other reports on the spherical rigid baffle. For the spherical non-rigid baffles, the variations of self-radiation impedance and mutual-radiation impedance are identified. Therefore, these results can be applied to design and radiation characteristics analysis of acoustic transducers.

  • The shell and tube heat exchangers were introduced to apply to a big capacity condenser and a high pressure feed water heater for power plant in the beginning of 1990s. Design and manufacturing technology fur shell and tube heat exchangers have been developed until now. But it is very difficult to calculate the expected performance characteristics of the shell and tube heat exchanger, because there are many design parameters to be considered according to internal structure and the shell side heat transfer mechanism complicately related to the design parameters. Design parameters to be considered in the design stage of shell and tube heat exchanger are shell and tube side fluids, flow rate, inlet and outlet temperature, physical properties, type of heat exchanger, outer diameter, thickness, length of tube, tube arrangement, tube pitch, permissive pressure loss on both sides, type of baffle plate, baffle cutting ratio. The propose of study is an analysis TEMA(Tubular Exchanger Manufacturers Association) E shell and tube heat exchanger performance with changing a number of baffles(3, 5, 7, 9, 11) and tubes(16, 20) and determined optimal baffle spacing.

  • Feedwater Heaters are important components in a nuclear power plant. As the age of heater increases, the maintenance cost required for continuous operation also increases. Most heaters have the carbon steel shells, tube support plates and flow baffles. The carbon steel is susceptible to flow-accelerated corrosion. This is especially true if the flow has a two-phase mixture of steam and condensate. The wall thinning around the wet steam entrance area of the shell is inevitable during some long term operation. The structural integrity of the feedwater heater shell affects the safe operation of the nuclear power plant. Therefore, it is needed for the thinned shell to be repaired. The maintenance method for preventing failure of the shell should be determined by investigating various factors including the stress distribution of thinned area. The stress analysis of the shell including the steam entrance region is studied in this paper. The results of thinned shell is compared with that of intact shell.

  • In the present paper, the phenomena of abnormal noise and vibration due to acoustic resonance of CFBC(Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion) boiler was presented. The acoustic resonance which occurred in the gas path of CFBC boiler system was caused by coincidence of vortex shedding frequency of tube bank and acoustic natural frequency of duct and hopper. And, the phenomena of beating arose from the interference of two closed resonant waves at 66.4Hz and 70.8Hz. There are two control methods for acoustic resonance in this system. The first method is to change the vortex shedding frequency from the structural alterations on the tube bank. And the second method is to change the acoustic natural frequency of the gas path with the installation of anti-noise baffles. The second one which is relatively easy to apply, was adapted in this study. As a result, the noise and vibration level have been decreased by 41dB and 94% at 66.4Hz, respectively. And the improvement of noise and vibration at 70.8Hz was identified by sensory evaluation.

  • The fluid-flow characteristics of flue-gas-recirculation (FGR) system can have a significant effect on system efficiency of a sintering plant. The flow characteristics in the system were investigated. A sintering plant with FGR system was modeled. Numerical visualization was performed and flow characteristics were analyzed. Characteristics of the flow distribution of the branch ducts, the inflow of air into the recirculating hood, and the flow in the hood were discussed. Based on the results three suggestions were proposed: (1) distribution of branch duct flowrate upstream, (2) installation of external air ducts in the hood, and (3) installation of baffles at the hood corners. The suggestions were tested numerical and experimental visualization methods. The suggestions were effective and confirmed to be applicable to the actual sinter plant.

  • Characteristics of fluid flow and heat transfer in a tube with disk and annular baffle for heat exchanger of condensing boiler was numerically studied. The STAR-CD code was used to solve the governing equations and the temperature and flow fields were investigated. The interval between tube and annular baffle, height and diameter of baffle were selected as important design parameters, and the effects of these parameters on heat transfer and fluid flow were studied. As a result, in the case of with interval, the pressure was decreased, but heat transfer was increased. Heat transfer was slowly increased as the size of disk and annular baffle were increased and the distance between baffles were decreased. The pressure drop was rapidly changed fur diameter and size of disk and annular baffle. In addition, it was desirable that optimal conditions to design heat exchanger were about B$\_$a/R=0.5, L/R=1.

  • Total lengths of domestic pipe network for district heating system are above about 2,500Km. A lots of pumping power for heat transportation through long pipe are required by the flow friction of pipe surface. Until now there have been considered about various methods to reduce the flow friction for district heating system such as using surfactants and turbulence promoters by swirl flow and baffles etc. At this study, swirl flow generator was tested about the possibility to increase the heat transfer ratio at the heat exchanger in the case which the suppling water temperature increased from $50^{\circ}C$ until $120^{\circ}C$. Experimental results showed that the heat transfer ratio increased and also pressure increase ratio increased simultaneously in the case which swirl flow generator installed. The amount of the increasing ratio for heat transfer and pressure were reached until 4.33% and 11% at the case of $120^{\circ}C$ suppling temperature which domestic district heating system were using.

  • The filtered vacuum arc source (FVAS), which is adopted by magnetic filtering methode to remove the macro-particle in vacuum arc plasma, was composed of a torus structure with bending angle of 60 degree. The radius of torus was 266 mm, the radius of plasma duct was 80 mm and the total length was 600 mm. The magnet parts were consisted of one permanent magnet, one magnetic yoke and five solenoid magnets. The plasma duct was electrically isolated from the ground so that a bias voltage could be applied. The baffles inside plasma duct were installed in order to prevent the recoil effect of macro-particles. Graphite was used as the cathode material to coat the amorphic diamond film and its diameter was 80 mm. The amorphic diamond film attracts much attention due to its excellent mechanical, optical and tribological properties suitable for wide range of applications. The effects of solenoid magnet in plasma extraction were studied by computer simulation and experiment using Taguchi's method. The source and extraction magnet affected the arc stabilization. The extraction beam current was maximized with low value of the source magnet current and high value of the filtering magnet current. Optimum deposition condition was obtained when the currents of arc discharge, source, extraction, bending, deflection and outlet magnet were 30 A, 1 A, 3 A, 5 A, and 5 A, respectively.

  • A sedimentation basin is used to remove suspended sediments which can cause abrasive and erosive wear on hydraulic turbines of hydropower plants. This sediment erosion not only decreases efficiency of the turbine but also increases maintenance costs. In this study, the three-dimensional numerical simulations were carried out on the overseas hydropower project. The simulations of flow and suspended sediment concentration were obtained using FLOW-3D computational fluid dynamics code. The simulations provide removal efficiency of a sedimentation basin based on particle sizes. The influence of baffles on the flow field and the removal efficiency of suspended sediments in the sedimentation basin has been investigated. This paper also provides the numerical simulations for sediment-induced density currents that may occur in the sedimentation basin. The simulation results indicate that the formation of density currents decreases the removal efficiency. When a baffle is installed in the sedimentation basin, the baffle provides intensive settling zones resulting in increasing the sediments settling. Thus the enhanced removal efficiency can be achieved by installing the baffle inside the sedimentation basin.

  • Oil-fired power plant usually uses several burners and combustion air is supplied to each burner through the complicated duct which is called windbox. A windbox should be designed to supply combustion air to each burner uniformly but, due to the complicated duct shape, flow distribution in the windbox is unbalanced and non-uniform supplies of combustion air are induced by these unbalanced flows in the windbox. These flow patterns tend to make flame unstable, increase the formation of pollutants and lower the overall combustion efficiency. To prevent these disadvantages, flow patterns in the windbox should be investigated for the uniform flow distribution. In this study, computational simulation method was used to investigate the flow distribution in a windbox and measured the velocities at the exit of burners in a real windbox and model tests to compare with CFD results. The results show two significant flow patterns. One is that the flow rates of each burner are different from each other and this means that all burners operate in different conditions of air to fuel ratio. The other is that the flow distribution at the exit of each burner is not axi-symmetric although the burner shape is axi-symmetric. Additionally some modifications of windbox shape and installation of baffles were proposed to make the uniform flow in the windox.
