  • Multibeam backscatter strength is dependent not only on seafloor sediment facies but also on changed incidence angle due to the actual bottom slope. Therefore, the correction for actual bottom slope should be considered before the analysis of backscatter strength. This paper demonstrates the backscatter correction technique for the actual incidence angle and ensonified area. The target area is a part of the eastern Yellow Sea with water depths of 46~55 m. The area is located between the sand ridges and covered by large dunes with various bottom slopes. The dunes usually have the gentle slopes of about $1{\sim}3^{\circ}$, but show some steep slopes of $5{\sim}15^{\circ}$ on the crest. The backscatter strength values on the crest range from -34 to -23 dB, assuming that the bottom is flat. However, this study shows that the backscatter strength range was somewhat reduced (-32~-25 dB) after correction for actual bottom slope. In addition, the backscatter imagery was significantly improved; high and low backscatter strength values on the crest due to the actual bottom slope were normalized. The results demonstrate that the correction technique in this study is an effective tool for processing backscatter strength.

  • In this paper, we studied a spectrum sensing algorithm for the efficient use of available spectrum in RF energy harvesting system combined with backscatter communication. We first looked for white spaces and then, selected low fading channel among white spaces using spectrum sensing algorithm at a transmitter. The transmitter employing the algorithm alleviates signal interference and improves the received signal strength indication through signals transmitted by low fading channel. The proposed RF energy harvesting system combined with backscatter communication is used the transmitter employing the algorithm. As a result of computer simulations, we can find the performance improvements of RF energy harvesting, BER of backscatter communication, and the received signal strength per distance of backscatter tag.

  • Simrad EM950 multibeam data and surficial sediment grab samples were acquired to correlate backscatter strength with surficial sediment properties in the eastern Yellow Sea which tidal sand ridges are dominantly developed. The study area is divided into the western sand ridge zone characterized by well sorted, fine sandy sediment, and the eastern non-sand ridge zone characterized by poorly sorted, medium sand with some gravels and shell fragments. In spite of minor difference in grain size between two zones, the variations of backscatter strength between two zones are distinct. Multibeam backscatter strength of study area shows good correlation with the grain size of surface sediment as well as the carbonate contents. High occurrence of carbonate shell fragments can increase grain size and bottom roughness. The dominance of higher backscatter strength in the eastern non-sand ridge zone may reflect the effects of coarse grain size and high shell fragments contents.

  • The contrast (fish body to medium ratio) of density and sound speed were measured to estimate acoustic scattering from small juvenile cod (Gadus macrocephalus) with the Kirchhoff-Ray Mode backscatter model. The density contrast was measured by the density-bottle method and the sound speed contrast was estimated by the time of flight method. The results revealed that the measured density contrasts of juvenile cod varied between 1.003 and 1.029 (mean = 1.014, S.D. = 0.01). On the other hand, sound speed contrasts varied between 1.039 and 1.041 (mean = 1.041, S.D. = 0.001). The relationship between averaged target strength (TS) and total length (TL) established by the model were <$TS_{38kHz}$> = 20log(TL) - 68.8 and <$TS_{38kHz}$> = 20log(TL) - 69.4, respectively.

  • The ADP is an advanced piece of oceanographic equipment that measures water speed and direction profiles from the acoustic Doppler principle. In recent years, the strength of the acoustic backscatter obtained from ADP has been used to measure vertically suspended sediment concentration(SSC) profiles. In this study, an ADP was installed in coastal waters near Yumsan, on the west coast of Korea, and flow and sediment data were gathered simultaneously. SSC concentrations were calculated from the acoustic backscatter strengths adjusted by using calibrated acoustic coefficients. The observed SSC profiles were compared with analytical solutions and showed good agreement. Simultaneously, the suspended material fluxes were analyzed in detail. ADP was very useful for measuring the vertically distributed suspended sediment concentrations and flow velocity profiles.

  • The variation in microstructure and mechanical properties during heat treatment was examined in a series of 0.27% C-1.5% Mn-1.0% Cr steels with silicon contents in the range of 0 to 1.0 wt%. It was found that addition of 0.5%~1.0% silicon increased both tensile strength and impact toughness through solid solution strengthening and microstructural refinement. 0.27% C-1.0% Si-1.5% Mn-1.0% Cr steel showed tensile strength of 1,700 MPa in the as-quenched condition and the steel revealed a full martensitic structure even after air cooling from $900^{\circ}C$ to room temperature, showing air hardening characteristics. Tempering at $150^{\circ}C$ which corresponds to the typical paint-baking temperature after painting of body in white, slightly decreased the tensile strength and increased elongation, but substantially increased the impact toughness compared to the as-quenched steel.

  • The variation in microstructure and mechanical properties during heat treatment was examined in a series of 0.27% C-1.0% Si-1.5% Mn steels with chromium contents in the range of 0 to 1.0 wt%. It was found that chromium decreased the martensite packet size through the austenite grain refinement and increased tensile strength in the as-quenched steel, about 70 MPa per 1.0 wt%. The 0.27% C-1.0% Si-1.5% Mn-1.0% Cr steel showed tensile strength of 1700 MPa in the as-quenched steel. The 0.27% C-1.0% Si-1.5% Mn-1.0% Cr steel revealed a full martensitic structure after air cooling from $900^{\circ}C$ to room temperature, showing air hardening characteristics. Tempering at $150^{\circ}C$ slightly decreased the tensile strength and increased elongation, which is in a good agreement with impact toughness result.

  • The influence of electric current on the joining properties of aluminum and copper was investigated. Various pulsed electric current conditions were set to the joining specimens followed by pressure. The shear strength of the joint area between aluminum and copper was measured by the lab shear test. In addition, the microstructures of the joint area were observed through a field emission scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray, and electron backscatter diffraction. The mechanical properties of each phase in the joint region were measured by nano-indentation. As a result, it was confirmed that electrically assisted solid state joining of copper and aluminum could be applied in various industrial fields.

  • The plastic deformation behavior of cemented carbides is related to the WC grain boundary strength. Ab initio calculations predict that Co and Mn segregate to WC/WC grain boundaries. To experimentally study the effect of Mn, a WC-Co-Mn material was manufactured and compared to a WC-Co material. The microstructure was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), including electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Special attention was paid to the WC grain size and the frequency of special low-energy grain boundaries. Mn was found to have negligible effect on both the WC grain growth and the fraction of $\sum2$ WC/WC boundaries in the as-sintered material.

  • Electrically assisted pressure joining (EAPJ) utilizes electric current-induced kinetic enhancement to achieve solid state diffusion bonding within a short time. In this study, aluminum alloy specimens, which are known as a hard-to-weld metal, were successfully solid-state joined through EAPJ. The bonding process was performed in two ways: continuous direct current (CDC), which applies relatively low current density, and pulsed direct current (PDC), which applies high current density. It was observed that the bonding strength was higher in PDC than in CDC. The microstructure of the joint was characterized using 3D X-ray microscopy (XRM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD).
