  • Background In all branches of medicine, it is the surgeon's responsibility to provide the patient with accurate information before surgery. This is especially important in cosmetic surgery because the surgeon must focus on the aesthetic results desired by the patient. Methods An experimental protocol was developed based on an original questionnaire given to 72 patients. The nature of the responses, the patients' motivation and expectations, the degree of patient awareness regarding the planned operation, and the patients' perceptions of the purpose of the required consent for cosmetic surgery were all analyzed using Fisher's exact test. Results Candidates for abdominal wall surgery had significantly more preoperative psychological problems than their counterparts did (P=0.035). A significantly different percentage of patients under 40 years of age compared to those over 40 years of age searched for additional sources of information prior to the operation (P=0.046). Only 30% of patients with a lower educational background stated that the preoperative information had been adequate, whereas 92% of subjects with secondary schooling or a postsecondary degree felt that the information was sufficient (P=0.001). A statistically significant difference was also present between patients according to their educational background regarding expected improvements in their quality of life postoperatively (P=0.008). Conclusions This study suggests that patients require more attention in presurgical consultations and that clear communication should be prioritized to ensure that the surgeon understands the patient's expectations.

  • A method of extracting central objects in color images without any prior-knowledge is proposed in this paper, which uses basically information of significant color distribution. A central object in an image is defined as a set of regions that lie around center of the image and have significant color distribution against the other surround (or background) regions. Significant colors in an image are first defined as the colors that are distributed more densely around center of the image than near borders. Then core object regions (CORs) are selected as the regions a lot of pixels of which have the significant colors. Finally, the adjacent regions to the CORs are iteratively merged if they are similar to the CORs but not to the background regions in color distribution. The merging result is accepted as the central object that may include differently color-characterized regions and/or two or more objects of interest. Usefulness of the significant colors in extracting the central object was verified through experiments on several kinds of test images. We expect that central objects shall be used usefully in image retrieval applications.

  • In this study, the temperature bias of aircraft observation was estimated through comparison with sonde observation prior to developing the temperature bias correction method at the Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems (KIAPS). First, we tried to compare aircraft temperature with collocated sonde observations at 0000 UTC on June 22, 2012. However, it was difficult to estimate the temperature bias due to the lack of samples and the uncertainty of the sonde position at high altitudes. Second, we attempted a background innovation comparison for sonde and aircraft using KIAPS Package for Observation Processing (KPOP). The one month averaged background innovation shows the aircraft temperature have a warm bias against sonde for all levels. In particular, there is a globally distinct warm bias about 0.4 K between 200 hPa and 300 hPa corresponding to flight level. Spatially, most of the areas showed the warm bias except for below 300 hPa in some part of China at 0000 and 1200 UTC and below 850 hPa in Australia at 0000 UTC. In general, the temperature bias was larger at 1200 UTC than 0000 UTC. Based on the estimated temperature bias, we have applied the static bias correction method to the aircraft temperature observation. As a result, the warm bias of the aircraft temperature has decreased at most levels, but a slight cold bias has occurred in some areas.

  • Although advertising plays an important role of information source for consumer, also advertising affect negative influence to the consumer and social system. Under the such a concept, this study reviewed the social responsibility of advertising and the freedom of expression including the foreign country's advertising regulation system as the theoretical background of advertising regulation. In addition, this study analyzed the case of the advertisement reviews by Korea Advertising Review Board(august 1, 2000, the business concerning prior deliberation of broadcast advertisements was entrusted to the Korea Advertising Review Board, a civilian self-regulatory body, by the Korean Broadcasting Commission) and Fare Trade Commission. As the result of data analysis, some problems of regulation system and codes are suggested and discussed as follows: (1) the high ratio of rejection (2) using the unnecessary foreign language (3) inconsistency application of deliberation standard.

  • The voltage controlled ramp(VCR) waveform has recently been introduced in the reset period prior to addressing for plasma display. However, this method shows the oscillation of gap voltage when the ramp rate is increased in order to reduce reset period. In this paper a current controlled ramp(CCR) waveform method is suggested. This method can suppress the oscillation of gap voltge under the condition of shorter ramp time. Moreover, the reset time can be reduced about 30% compared with VCR method under the same background luminance.

  • Background: Chronic low back pain can be a manifestation of lumbar degenerative disease, herniation of intervertebral discs, arthritis, or lumbar stenosis. When nerve roots are compromised, low back pain, with or without lower extremity involvement, may occur. Local inflammatory processes play an important role in patients with acute lumbosciatic pain. The purpose of this study was to assess the value of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) measurements in patients with chronic low back pain or radiculopathy. Methods: ESR and hsCRP were measured in 273 blood samples from male and female subjects with low back pain and/or radiculopathy due to herniated lumbar disc, spinal stenosis, facet syndrome, and other diseases. The hsCRP and ESR were measured prior to lumbar epidural steroid injection. Results: The mean ESR was 18.8 mm/h and mean hsCRP was 1.1 mg/L. ESR had a correlation with age. Conclusions: A significant systemic inflammatory reaction did not appear to arise in patients with chronic low back pain.

  • Animation is an art, which experiences through visual and auditory sense. The purpose of this study is to find out whether the theory of film sound can be also applied to animation sound. The study also aims to find out whether the mood and feeling of animation can be influenced by rhythm and fidelity of sound. To begin with, exampled a few animations and analyzed their sound base on the theoretical background of film sound and found out that influence of rhythm and fidelity of sound in animation is much more effective than in film. To find out the relationship between the changes of the mood according to different rhythm, I have applied the various rhythms of sound in a same sequential images. Result proved that the mood of animation was changed according to different rhythms that applied to animation. sound has a great ability of delivering the mood prior to images and different sound can change the overall feeling and mood of animation. Also proved that influence of fidelity of sound is much greater than rhythms of sound, especially in comic animation.

  • In this paper we have presented a condition monitoring method of check valve using neural network. The acoustic emission sensor was used to acquire the condition signals of check valve in direct vessel injection (DVI) test loop. The acquired sensor signal pass through a signal conditioning which are consisted of steps; rejection of background noise, amplification, analogue to digital conversion, extract of feature points. The extracted feature points which represent the condition of check valve was utilized input values of fault diagnosis algorithms using pre-learned neural network. The fault diagnosis algorithm proceeds fault detection, fault isolation and fault identification within limited ranges. The developed algorithm enables timely diagnosis of failure of check valve’s degradation and service aging so that maintenance and replacement could be preformed prior to loss of the safety function. The overall process has been experimented and the results are given to show its effectiveness.

  • During the last decade researchers in science education and psychology have emphasized the importance of children's ideas, or "what they already know", which they bring to their related learning situations. Most research reports on the children's prior ideas reject both the traditional epistemologies and the conventional learning theories. Therefore, this study has its objective to analyze the traditional epistemologies as well as post-positivism contemporarily in vogue, to examine both the conventional learning theories and the constructivism of psychology, and then, based on the analyses, to draw the implications for the future science education. The implications are described under such headings as the nature of science, the science curricula, and the science teaching/learning. The implications are drawn in logical relation to the post-positivism and constructivism, and some of which are empirically validated by the research on the children's conceptions.

  • Statistical image reconstruction methods have played an important role in emission computed tomography (ECT) since they accurately model the statistical noise associated with gamma-ray projection data. Although the use of statistical methods in clinical practice in early days was of a difficult problem due to high per-iteration costs and large numbers of iterations, with the development of fast algorithms and dramatically improved speed of computers, it is now inevitably becoming more practical. Some statistical methods are indeed commonly available from nuclear medicine equipment suppliers. In this paper, we first describe a mathematical background for statistical reconstruction methods, which includes assumptions underlying the Poisson statistical model, maximum likelihood and maximum a posteriori approaches, and prior models in the context of a Bayesian framework. We then review a recent progress in developing fast iterative algorithms.
