In this research, shaking table tests for three types of gravity quay wall system were performed to analyze the influence of excess pore pressure in backfill soils on the natural frequency of gravity quay wall systems. The elastic modulus of backfill soils was also estimated from the back analyses using the results of the shaking table tests. From the test results, it was observed that as the magnitude of excess pore pressures increased, the natural frequency of the gravity quay wall system decreased and vice versa. The natural frequency was about 44Hz when no excess pore pressure was generated in backfill soils, and decreased to about 16Hz at the pore pressure ratio of 0.55. The elastic modulus of backfill soils reached the constant maximum value when the pore pressure ratio was less than 0.2, and abruptly decreased as the pore pressure ratio became larger than that. The elastic modulus of backfill soils decreased to $10\%$ of the maximum value when the pore pressure ratio was 0.55.
In this study, the reinforcing effect of geogrids in the narrow backfill by sand was experimentally studied. In the model tests, the size of space and the slope of the cut off slope were varied out. The resultant and the distribution of lateral earth pressure were measured. Width of backfill space varied 10 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm at the lower wall level and angle of the cut off slope varied $90^{\circ}$, $75^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$. Geogrids were installed in the backfill. Measured results showed that the distribution of the lateral earth pressure due to the narrow backfill developed in a arching shape. And the earth pressure was reduced due to the reinforcement of the backfill by geogrid. geogrid helps reduction of lateral earth pressure.
This paper presents a kinematic limit analysis for passive earth pressure of rigid retaining structures considering the unsaturation of the backfill. Particular emphasis in the current work is focused on the effects of the spatial change in the degree of saturation on the passive earth pressure under different steady-infiltration/evaporation conditions. The incorporation of change of effective unit weight with degree of saturation is the main contribution of this study. The problem is formulated based on the log-spiral failure model rather than the linear wedge failure model, in which both the spatial variations of suction and soil effective unit weight are taken into account. Parametric studies, which cover a wide range of flow conditions, soil types and properties, wall batter, back slope angle as well as the interface friction angle, are performed to investigate the effects of these factors on the passive pressure and the corresponding shape of potential failure surfaces in the backfill. The results reveal that the flow conditions have significant effects on the suction and unit weight of the clayey backfill, and hence greatly impact the passive earth pressure of retaining structures. It is expected that present study could provide an insight into evaluation of the passive earth pressure of retaining structures with unsaturated backfills.
It is important to pay careful attention to the backfill construction for the structural integrity of concrete box culvert. To increase the structural integrity of culvert good compaction by the dynamic compaction roller with big capacity is as effective as good backfill materials. However structural distress of the culvert could be occurred due to the excessive earth pressure by great dynamic compaction load. In this study, two box culverts were constructed with change compaction materials and construction methods. Two type of on-site soils such as subbase and subgrade materials were used as backfill materials. In most case, dynamic compaction rollers with 11 to 12 ton weights were used and vibration frequency were applied from 2000 to 2500 rpm for the great compaction energy. Backfill compactions with good quality soils were carried out to examine the effect of cushions on dynamic lateral soil pressure. Expanded polystyrene (EPS) and rubber of tire were adapted as cushion materials and they are set on the culverts before backfill construction. This paper presents the main results on the characteristics of dynamic earth pressures. Test result indicates that the amounts of increased dynamic pressures are affected with backfill materials, depth of pressure cell, and compaction condition. The earth pressure during compaction can give harmful effect to box culvert because the value of dynamic earth pressure coefficient $(\DeltaK_{dyn}=\DeltaK\sigma_h\DeltaK\sigma_v)$ during compaction is greater than that of static condition. It was observed that cushion panels of EPS(t=10cm) and rubber(t=5cm) are effective to mitigate dynamic lateral pressure on the culverts.

In this study, a standard section of a railway bridge abutment wall was designed to satisfy the external stability condition in accordance with the design criteria; this design was used to compare and analyze the active earth pressure and to calculate various types of earth pressure acting on the virtual back (wall, plane) according to the frictional angle of the backfill materials. Also, the external stability, member force and construction cost were analyzed according to the frictional angle of the backfill materials using various theories of earth pressure such as Rankine, Coulomb, Trial Wedge, and Improved Trial Wedge. As for the results, it was found that lateral earth pressure at the virtual back plane was higher than at the virtual back wall, and that these values decreased with the increase of the frictional angle of the backfill materials. The increasing of the frictional angle of the backfill materials decreased the active earth pressure (according to Rankine, Coulomb, Trial Wedge, and Improved Trial Wedge results), and the member force as well as the construction cost were reduced.

Cut and Cover Method is generally used in shallow tunnels and tunnel entrances with thin soil cover. In this type of cons0truction, backfilling is considered to be the most important process. In this process even though the backfill material is thoroughly compacted, compaction and self-weight due to vehicular vibration and pressure exerted by the soil cause the backfill material to undergo self-compression which leads to settlement. The settlement of the backfill material subjects the tunnel lining under excessive earth pressure which cause cracking and deformation. In the model test performed installation of geotextile on the sides and top of the tunnel was able to reduce the earth pressure acting on the tunnel lining.

The purpose of this study is to present the application of WFS co-mixtures for retaining wall as flowable backfill. The fly ash, generated at the Tae-An thermoelectric power plant, was used in this research and was classified as Class F. Green Sand, Furane Sand, and Coated Sand, which had been used at a foundry located in Pusan, were used. Couple of laboratory tests and small scale retaining wall tests were performed to obtain the physical properties of the WFS co-mixtures and the possibility of backfill materials of retaining wall. The range of permeability for all the co-mixtures was from 3.0${\times}$10$\^$-3/ cm/s to 6.0${\times}$10$\^$-5/ cm/s. The unconfined strength of the 28-day cured specimens reached around 550kPa. Results of the consolidated-undrained triaxial test showed that the internal friction angle is between 33.5$^{\circ}$ and 41.8$^{\circ}$. The lateral earth pressure against wall decreased up to 80% of initial pressure within a 12 hours and the total lateral earth pressure is less than that of typical granular soil. It was enough to construct the backfill for the standard retaining of 6m with just two steps, like fill the co-mixtures for half of retaining wall, and then fill the others after 1 day. The stability of retaining wall for overturning and sliding increased as the curing time elapsed.
Barricade failures generally occur at the early times of paste backfill when it is fresh in the stopes. The backfill strength increases and need for barricading pressure decreases as a result of the hydration reactions. In this study, paste backfill barricades of Cayeli copper mine were investigated to design cemented mineral processing plant tailings as barricade body concrete. Paste backfill in sub-level caving stopes of the mine needs to be barricaded for only four or five days. Therefore, short term strength and workability tests were applied on several cemented tailings material designs. Barricade failure mechanisms, important points of barricade designing and details of the new concrete material are explained in this work. According to the results obtained with this experimental study, the tailings were assessed to be used in concrete applied as temporary supports such as cemented paste backfill barricades.

In this paper, a dynamic centrifuge model test was conducted on a 24.8-meter-deep excavation consisting of a 20 m sand layer and 4.8 m bedrock, classified as S3 by Korean seismic design code KDS 17 10 00. A braced excavation wall supports the hole. From the results, the mechanism of seismically induced earth pressure was investigated, and their distribution and loading points were analyzed. During earthquake loadings, active seismic earth pressure decreases from the at-rest earth pressure since the backfill laterally expands at the movement of the wall toward the active direction. Yet, the passive seismic earth pressure increases from the at-rest earth pressure since the backfill pushes to the wall and laterally compresses at it, moving toward a passive direction and returning to the initial position. The seismic earth pressure distribution shows a half-diamond distribution in the dense sand and a uniform distribution in loose sand. The loading point of dynamic thrust corresponding with seismic earth pressure is at the center of the soil backfill. The dynamic thrust increased differently depending on the backfill's relative density and input motion type. Still, in general, the dynamic thrust increased rapidly when the maximum horizontal displacement of the wall exceeded 0.05 H%.

The shield tunneling method can minimize surface settlements by preventing the deformation of tunnel face and tunnel intrados due to tunnel excavation. For this purpose, it is very important to control the operating conditions of shield TBM. The face pressure and backfill pressure for tail void grouting should be the most important and immediate measure not only to restrain surface settlement, but also to influence the effective stress and pore water pressure around the circumstance of tunnel during excavation. The reaction of the ground to the application of face pressure and backfill pressure relies on the stiffness and permeability of ground. Especially, the reaction of saturated clayey ground formations, which shows the time-dependent deformation, is different from the permeable ground. Hence, in this paper it was investigated how the TBM operating conditions, ground stiffness, and permeability impact on the surface settlement of saturated clayey ground. For this purpose, a series of parametric studies were carried out by means of the stress-pore water pressure coupled FE analysis. The results show that the settlement of soft clayey ground is divided into the immediate settlement and consolidation settlement. Especially, the consolidation settlement depends on the ground stiffness and permeability. In addition, the existence of critical face pressure and backfill pressure was identified. The face pressure and backfill pressure above the critical value may cause an unexpected increase in the ground settlement.
