  • The purpose of this study is to develop landslide susceptibility analysis techniques using artificial neural networks and to apply the newly developed techniques for assessment of landslide susceptibility to the study area of Yongin in Korea. Landslide locations were identified in the study area from interpretation of aerial Photographs and field survey data, and a spatial database of the topography, soil type and timber cover were constructed. The landslide-related factors such as topographic slope, topographic curvature, soil texture, soil drainage, soil effective thickness, timber age, and timber diameter were extracted from the spatial database. Using those factors, landslide susceptibility and weights of each factor were analyzed by two artificial neural network methods. In the first method, the landslide susceptibility index was calculated by the back propagation method, which is a type of artificial neural network method. Then, the susceptibility map was made with a GIS program. The results of the landslide susceptibility analysis were verified using landslide location data. The verification results show satisfactory agreement between the susceptibility index and existing landslide location data. In the second method, weights of each factor were determinated. The weights, relative importance of each factor, were calculated using importance-free characteristics method of artificial neural networks.

  • Methods of back calculation for either design procedures or elastic moduli obtained from FWD(Falling Weight Deflectometer) tests have widely been used to predict remaining life of airfield concrete pavements. Since the variation of the elastic modulus obtained from the FWD test depends on the back calculation methods, prediction of remaining life of airfield pavement using the back calculation method has not been reliable. In addition, the FWD method only concentrates on the structural integrity of the pavement without considering functional distress. In this study, a newly developed remaining life estimation procedure is proposed. This methodology includes both structural and functional consideration and suggests models and decision criteria for each stage. In order to improve the estimation procedure on remaining life of pavement, conducted the several tests on an old airfield concrete pavement. As a result, it is concluded that the load transfer efficiency on joint is better for predicting remaining life of pavement than the elastic modulus, which is commonly used. In order to verify applicability of the newly developed estimation procedure and detailed models, investigation and analysis were conducted according to the new methodology on C-airfield pavement. Finally, it is confirmed that the efficiency of the proposed method for practical application was good enough.

  • In this study, Poria cocos bark were extracted by supercritical process, and anti-inflammatory, whitening, and antioxidant effects were measured in comparison with ethanol extract. Also, An effective percutaneous permeation method using a selected formulation of the extract and a drug delivery peptide was proposed. Pachymic acid, known as the anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory compound of the ventricle, is an indicator component and the HPLC analysis shows that the supercritical extract of the pericardium is more than twice that of the Poria cocos bark extract. In order to confirm antioxidative effect of Bombyx mori, DPPH scavenging ability and ABTS scavenging ability test showed that the ethanol extract of Poria cocos Back had lower concentration than the supercritical extract of Poria cocos back. However, RAW 264.7 Measurements of Nitric oxide (NO) production in cells showed lower NO production at the same concentration than the Poria cocos back ethanol extract. In addition, after 72 hours of processing of $20{\mu}g/mL$ of the Poria cocos back extract in B16 melanoma cells, both the intracellular and extracellular melanin extract were effective and the supercritical extract was lower melanin content. No toxicity was observed at the concentration of $800{\mu}g/mL$ in RAW 264.7 cells used in NO production experiments. However, in B16 melanoma cells, even at $50{\mu}g/mL$, both Poria cocos back ethanol extract and supercritical extract showed a survival rate of less than 60%. The liposome formulation and drug delivery peptides were shown to be useful for percutaneous permeation of Supercritical Extract of Poria cocos back using a liposome formulation and a drug delivery peptide. it is expected that there will be great potential for development as a variety of cosmetic materials for Poria cocos back.

  • A face detection plays an important role in face recognition, video surveillance, and human computer interaction. In this paper, we propose a progressive threshold method to detect human faces in real time. The consecutive face images are acquired from camera and transformed into YCbCr color space images. The skin color of the input images are separated using a skin color filter in the YCbCr color space and some candidated face areas are decided by connected component analysis. The intensity equalization is performed to avoid the effect of many circumstances and an arbitrary threshold value is applied to get binary images. The eye area can be detected because the area is clearly distinguished from others in the binary image progressive threshold method searches for an optimal eye area by progressively increasing threshold from low values. After progressive thresholding, the eye area is normalized and verified by back propagation algorithm to finalize the face detection.

  • This paper investigated the wind-snow flow around the bogie region of a high-speed train under crosswinds using a coupled numerical method of the unsteady Realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and discrete phase model (DPM). The flow features around the bogie region were discussed and the influence of bogie fairing height on the snow accumulation on the bogie was also analyzed. Here the high-speed train was running at a speed of 200 km/h in a natural environment with the crosswind speed of 15 m/s. The mesh resolution and methodology for CFD analysis were validated against wind tunnel experiments. The results show that large negative pressure occurs locally on the bottom of wheels, electric motors, gear covers, while the positive pressure occurs locally on those windward surfaces. The airflow travels through the complex bogie and flows towards the rear bogie plate, causing a backflow in the upper space of the bogie region. The snow particles mainly accumulate on the wheels, electric motors, windward sides of gear covers, side fairings and back plate of the bogie. Longer side fairings increase the snow accumulation on the bogie, especially on the back plate, side fairings and brake clamps. However, the fairing height shows little impact on snow accumulation on the upper region of the bogie. Compared to short side fairings, a full length side fairing model contributes to more than two times of snow accumulation on the brake clamps, and more than 20% on the whole bogie.

  • VaR, a tail-related risk measure is now widely used as a tool for a measurement and a management of financial risks. For more accurate measurement of VaR, recently we are particularly concerned about the approach based on extreme value theory rather than the traditional method based on the assumption of normal distribution. However, many studies about the approaches using extreme value theory was done only for the univariate case. In this paper, we discuss portfolio risk measurements with modelling multivariate extreme value distributions by combining copulas and extreme value theory. We also discuss the estimation of ES together with VaR as portfolio risk measures. Finally, we investigate the relative superiority of EVT-copula approach than variance-covariance method through the back-testing of an empirical data.

  • Even though GNSS provides highly accurate navigation information all over the world, it is vulnerable to jamming in the electronic warfare due to its weak signal power. The United States and Korea have plans to use terrestrial navigation systems as back-up systems during outage of GNSS. In order to develop back-up systems of GNSS, an M&S software platform is necessary for performance evaluation of various vehicle trajectories and integrated navigation systems. In this paper a design method of an M&S software is proposed for evaluation of multiple radio positioning integration systems. The proposed M&S software consists of a navigation environment generation part, a navigation algorithm part, a GUI part and a coverage analysis part. Effectiveness of the proposed design method is shown by implementing an M&S software for the GPS, DME and eLoran navigation systems.

  • This paper surveys the EBP(Error Back Propagation) learning, the Cross Entropy function and the LBL(Layer By Layer) learning, which are used for learning the MLP(Multi Layer Perceptrons). We compare the merits and demerits of each learning method in the handwritten digit recognition. Although the speed of EBP learning is slower than other learning methods in the initial learning process, its generalization capability is better. Also, the speed of Cross Entropy function that makes up for the weak points of EBP learning is faster than that of EBP learning. But its generalization capability is worse because the error signal of the output layer trains the target vector linearly. The speed of LBL learning is the fastest speed among the other learning methods in the initial learning process. However, it can't train for more after a certain time, it has the lowest generalization capability. Therefore, this paper proposes the standard of selecting the learning method when we apply the MLP.

  • This paper introduces the development of the caliper system for a geometry PIG (Pipeline Inspection Gauge). The objective of the caliper system is to detect and measure dents, wrinkles, and ovalities affect the pipe structural integrity. The developed caliper system consists of a finger arm, an anisotropic permanent magnet, a back yoke, pins, pinholes and a linear hall effect sensor. The angle displacement of the finger arm is measured by the change of the magnetic field in sensing module. Therefore the sensitivity of the caliper system mainly depends on the magnitude of the magnetic field inside the sensing module. In this research, the ring shaped anisotropic permanent magnet and linear hall effect sensors were used to produce and measure the magnetic field. The structure of the permanent magnet, the back yoke and pinhole positions were optimized that the magnitude of the magnetic field range between a high of 0.1020 Tesla and a low of zero by using three dimensional nonlinear finite element methods. A simulator was fabricated to prove the effectiveness of the developed caliper system and the computational scheme using the finite element method. The experimental results show that the developed caliper system is quite efficient for the geometry PIG with good performance.
