  • Alignment characteristic of liquid crystal (LC) on in-cell retarder which is composed of reactive mesogens has been tested. The in-cell retarder which is polymerized on top of the homogeneous alignment layer (AL) has an optic axis along the rubbing direction of the homeogenous AL and does show good alignment effect of the LC without showing any defects, which possibly allows a skip of another AL on the in-cell retarder that was required conventionally to control alignment of the LC. However, the measured pretilt angle is only 0.04 degree so that disclination lines are generated for a cell that uses the in-cell retarder as an AL when the LC is tilted upward by a vertical electric field.

  • A knee joint's longevity depends on the proper integration of structural components in an axial alignment. If just one of the components is abnormally off-axis, the biomechanical system fails, resulting in arthritis. The complexity of various failures in the knee joint has led orthopedic surgeons to select total knee replacement as a primary treatment. In many cases, this means sacrificing much of an other-wise normal joint. Here, we review novel computational approaches to describe knee physiotherapy by introducing a new dimension of foot loading to the knee axis alignment producing an improved functional status of the patient. New physiotherapeutic applications are then possible by aligning foot loading with the functional axis of the knee joint during the treatment of patients with osteoarthritis.

  • Purpose: To emphasize the necessity of post-fitting by follow-up test, the mis-alignment was analyzed after initial wearing of toric soft contact lenses (TSCL). Methods: After trial contact lenses were worn to 87 eyes with myopic astigmatism for 1 week, we observed the alignment of axis mark on trial contact lenses using slit lamp and corrected the rotated axis by method of LARS. After final fitting, rotation ratio, rotation degree and rotation position were analyzed compared to initial prescription divided to amount of cylinderical and spherical powers. Results: Rotation ratio of TSCL's axis was increased as increment of both cylinderical powers and (-)spherical powers. An average of rotation degree was $10^{\circ}{\sim}13^{\circ}$ which was not related to amount of their powers. Rotation position of TSCL's axis was more to temporal than to nasal. Conclusions: Because mis-alignment of axis after TSCL wearing induce the poor sight, adjustment of axial alignment as a result of follow-up must be performed.

  • Side channel attacks are well known as one of the most powerful physical attacks against low-power cryptographic devices and do not take into account of the target's theoretical security. As an important succeeding factor in side channel attacks (specifically in DPAs), exact time-axis alignment methods are used to overcome misalignments caused by trigger jittering, noise and even some countermeasures intentionally applied to defend against side channel attacks such as random clock generation. However, the currently existing alignment methods consider only on the position of signals on time-axis, which is ineffective for certain countermeasures based on time-axis misalignments. This paper proposes a new signal alignment method based on interpolation and decimation techniques. Our proposal can align the size as well as the signals' position on time-axis. The validity of our proposed method is then evaluated experimentally with a smart card chip, and the results demonstrated that the proposed method is more efficient than the existing alignment methods.

  • This paper deals with the transfer alignment problem of SDINS(StrapDown Inertial Navigation System) subjected to roll and pitch motions of the ship. Specifically, to reduce alignment errors induced by measurement time-delay and ship body flexure, an error compensation method is suggested based on delay state augmentation and DCM(Direction Cosine Matrix) partial matching. A linearized error model for the velocity and attitude matching transfer alignment system is first derived by linearizing the nonlinear measurement equation with respect to its time delay and augmenting the delay state into the conventional linear state equations. And then DCM partial matching is properly combined to reduce effects of a ship's Y axis flexure. The simulation results show that the suggested method is effective enough resulting in considerably less azimuth alignment errors.

  • This paper presents the measurement and correction of PCB alignment errors for PCB-manufacturing machines. The conventional PCB-manufacturing machine doesn't have enough accuracy to accommodate the demand for high-resolution circuit pattern and high-density mounting capacity of electronic chips. It is because of alignment errors of PCB loaded to the PCB-manufacturing machine. Therefore, this study focuses on the development of the system which is able to measure and correct alignment errors whit high-accuracy. An automatic optical inspection part measures the PCB alignment error using two cameras, and the high-accuracy 3-axis stage makes correct of these error. The operating system is run in the environment of Window 98 (or NT). Finally we implemented this system to PCB screen printer and PCB exposure system.

  • This paper deals with the transfer alignment problem of SDINS(StrapDown Inertial Navigation System) subjected to roll and pitch motions of the ship. In order to reduce alignment errors induced by ship body flexure, a linearized error model for the velocity and attitude matching transfer alignment system is first derived by linearizing the nonlinear measurement equation with respect to the dominant y axis component and defining the flexure state of random constant type. And then a robust state estimation scheme is introduced to account for modeling uncertainty of the flexure. By interpreting the simulation results and comparing with the velocity and DCM(Direction Cosine Matrix) partial matching method, it is shown that the proposed method is effective enough to improve the azimuth alignment performance.

  • Alignment systems with multi-axis motions are applied to determine vertical arrangement of multilayer assembly such as LCD, PDP, and MLCC. This study reports the development of XY${\theta}$ alignment stage which is designed as thin-type structure and parallel actuations. The thin-type parallel XY${\theta}$ alignment stage is maintained below $1{\mu}m$ in repeatability error. The squareness and straightness also allow precise motion for the alignment by the developed stage. The measured error is ${\pm}6.25{\mu}m$ in the alignment experiment by the vision system on the parallel XY${\theta}$ alignment stage.

  • Optical axis misalignment, which represents the position deviation of the objective lens from the optical axis, is an inevitable assembly error in an optical pick-up. Since the laser power intensity varies with respect to the distance from the optical axis, the misalignment leads to variation of the laser spot power intensity, which is one of the critical factors increasing data bit-error-rate in optical disc drives. In this paper, an auto-adjustment scheme for optical axis alignment is proposed to eliminate the undesirable variation of the laser spot power intensity in optical disc drives. An envelope of the data RF signal is extracted and utilized to detect the optical axis misalignment. Then an adjustment input is added to the driving input of the tracking actuator to shift the objective lens to the optical axis. Finally, the feasibility is verified by experiments.
