Axial piston pumps have been widely used as power sources for hydraulic systems, but studies on the fluid flow within the pump have been usually performed using 1-D analysis because of the difficulties in considering the fluid compressibility, high-speed revolution, variation of the flow rate, and complicated geometry. The goal of this study was to understand the hydraulic fluid flow within axial piston pumps by using the 3-D numerical method and the process of generating discharge pressure ripples. To improve the convergence and robustness of the simulation model, a grid system was constructed with hexahedron-type grids around the valve plate. Furthermore, we employed an empirical formula to describe the relationship between the oil density and pressure. The CFD (computational fluid dynamics) results compared well with the experimental data.

Swirling flows inside a swirl mixing chamber are investigated for simple configuration where swirl is produced by a tangential entry type swirl generator. The flow downstream of the swirl generator has been quantified by measurements two velocity components and their corresponding mean values along axial and radial direction using Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV). The mass flow rate of the tangential entry is increased in order to study their effect on the flow field. From the measurement profile of velocity and vorticity, flow mixing characteristics in a swirl mixing chamber are evaluated.
Numerical Predictions including secondary flows have been Performed for fully developed turbulent single-phase rod bundle flows. The k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model(two equation model) for the isotropic eddy viscosity, together with an algebraic stress model for generating secondary velocities, enabled the prediction of mean axial velocities, secondary velocities, and turbulent kinetic energy and turbulent stresses. Comparisons with experiment hate shown that the influence of secondary motion on mean flow and turbulence is dearly evident. The convective transport effects of secondary flow on the velocity field have been identified.
The effect of swirl flows un the fuel spray characteristics were investigated for various swillers in a model combustor. The interaction between the flow field and fuel spray in the main combustion tone made by frontal devices including fuel injection nozzles and swirlers. which were characterized by flow velocities, fuel droplet sizes and their distributions which were measured by APV(Adaptive Phase/Doppler Velocimetry) under atmospheric condition at 320cc/min kerosine fuel flow and 0.04kg/sec air supply. A dual swirler with circumferential two-stage swirl vanes of $40^{\circ}\;and\;45^{\circ}$ vanes in different directions and two single-stage swillers of $40^{\circ}$ vanes with 12 and 16 vanes were tested. It was found that the dual swirler has the largest recirculating zone with highest reverse flow velocity. The strongest swirl flow was found at the boundary of recirculation zone. Small fuel droplets were observed in the main axial stream and inside the recirculation zone when swirling flow field were generated by the frontal devices. These findings could give the tips on the optimal design of frontal devices to realize low emissions in gas turbine combustion.

Experimental and numerical studies for three-dimensional pulsatile flows are conducted to investigate the flow characteristics in the bifurcated tubes. Velocity measurements in experimental study were made by both Pulsed Doppler Ultrasound(PDU) machine and Laser Doppler Anemometer(LDA) system. Glycerin is used for experimental study. Experimental results are used to verify the results of the numerical simulation. Flow characteristics of Newtonian fluid and blood in the bifurcated tubes under the steady and pulsatlie flows are numerically investigated. Finite volume method is employed for three-dimensional numerical simulations. Blood is considered as a non-Newtonian fluid and the constitutive equation of blood is used for the numerical analysis. Numerical analyses are focused on the flow patterns for various branch angles ranging from 30.deg. to 90.deg. and diameter ratios such as 1.0, 0.8, and 0.6. Pulsatile flow characteristics of blood are compared with those of Newtonian fluid. Parameter effects on axial velocity, pressure and wall shear stress distribution along the bifurcated tubes are discussed in terms of the branch angle, diameter ratio, and Reynolds number.

In this study, it is numerically revealed that the secondary flow due to the Coriolls force in a straight duct rotating about an axis perpendicular to that of the duct is analogous to that caused by the centrifugal force in a stationary curved duct. Dimensionless parameters $K_{LR}=Re/\sqrt{Ro}$ and Rossby number in a rotating straight duct were used as a set corresponding to Dean number and curvature ratio in a stationary curved duct. When the value of Rossby number and curvature ratio is large, it is shown that the flow field satisfies the `asymptotic invariance property`, that is, there are strong quantitative similarities between the two flows such as friction factors, flow patterns, and maximum axial velocity magnitudes for the same values of $K_{LR}$ and Dean number.
The ASSERT-PV subchannel code developed by AECL has been applied as a design-assist tool to the advanced $CANDU^{(R)1}$ reactor fuel bundle. Based primarily on the $CANFLEX^{(R)2}$ fuel bundle, several geometry changes (such as element sizes and pitch-circle diameters of various element rings) were examined to optimize the dryout power and pressure-drop performances of the new fuel bundle. An experiment was performed to obtain dryout power measurements for verification of the ASSERT-PV code predictions. It was carried out using an electrically heated, Refrigerant-134a cooled, fuel bundle string simulator. The axial power profile of the simulator was uniform, while the radial power profile of the element rings was varied simulating profiles in bundles with various fuel compositions and burn-ups. Dryout power measurements are predicted closely using the ASSERT-PV code, particularly at low flows and low pressures, but are overpredicted at high flows and high pressures. The majority of data shows that dryout powers are underpredicted at low inlet-fluid temperatures but overpredicted at high inlet-fluid temperatures.

The experimental study on gasesous laminar free-jet flow was investigated by applying high voltage alternating current (AC) to the nozzle. The jet flows were affedcted significatly by AC electric fields particularly at high voltages for applied frequencies less than 80 Hz, while those were not responded to further increased frequencies. Under certain AC conditions of applied voltgae and frequency, the laminar gaseous fuel stem was broken down at an axial distance and subsequently separtaed into some parts. The velocity fields in jet flows interactiong with applied electric fields were compared with those without having electric field. Interaction of applying electric fields with laminar free jet flow was discussed in detail, and the possible mechanism was also explained.

Understanding of turbulent flow in the reactor coolant pump (RCP) is a premise of the optimal design of the RCP. Flow structures in the RCP, in view of the specially devised spherical casing, are more complicated than those associated with conventional pumps. Hitherto, knowledge of the flow characteristics of the RCP has been far from sufficient. Research into the nonintrusive measurement of the internal flow of the RCP has rarely been reported. In the present study, flow measurement using particle image velocimetry is implemented to reveal flow features of the RCP model. Velocity and vorticity distributions in the diffuser and spherical casing are obtained. The results illuminate the complexity of the flows in the RCP. Near the lower end of the discharge nozzle, three-dimensional swirling flows and flow separation are evident. In the diffuser, the imparity of the velocity profile with respect to different axial cross sections is verified, and the velocity increases gradually from the shroud to the hub. In the casing, velocity distribution is nonuniform over the circumferential direction. Vortices shed consistently from the diffuser blade trailing edge. The experimental results lend sound support for the optimal design of the RCP and provide validation of relevant numerical algorithms.
Surface modifications like rib-roughening and displaced insert devices like the twisted tape are commonly used in applications such as compact heat exchangers and cooling systems. In this paper, regionally averaged heat transfer distributions in square channels with twisted tape inserts and with twisted tape inserts plus interrupted ribs are respectively investigated. The square ribs are arranged to follow the trace of the twisted tape and along the flow direction defined as axial interrupted ribs. Each wall of the square channel is composed of isolated aluminum sections. Regionally averaged Nusselt number and channel averaged Nusselt number in turbulent air flows are presented for Reynold numbers from 8,900 to 29,000. We have obtained the following conclusions from the experimental study: 1) The local Nusselt number in the two-sided heated case is higher than that in the four-sided heated condition. 2) In the 4 heating wall channel with twisted tape inserts, Nusselt number based on bottom wall temperature is enhanced by 1.2 - 1.6 times if adding the axial interrupted ribs on the bottom wall only. 3) The twisted tape with interrupted ribs under the two-sided heating condition produces the highest heat transfer coefficient.
