  • Computational and experimental investigations on the three-dimensional flowfield through an automotive cooling fan are carried out in this work. Steady, incompressible, three-dimensional, turbulent flow through a rotating axial-flow fan is analyzed with Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations and standard k-.epsilon. turbulence model. The governing equations are discretized with finite-volume approximations in non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinates. Computational static pressures on the casing wall agree well with the experimental data which are measured in this work. And, they are sensitive to the change of tip clearance. The flowfield is not significantly affected by the thickness of the blade. The k-.omega. model gives the static pressure rise on the casing wall which is similar to that with the k-.epsilon. model.

  • In this work, a modified stage-stacking method for the performance prediction of multi-stage axial flow compressors is proposed. The method is based on a simultaneous calculation of all interstage variables (temperature, pressure, flow velocity) instead of the conventional sequential stage-by-stage scheme. The method is also very useful in simulating the effect of changing angles of the inlet guide vane and stator vanes on the compressor operating characteristics. Generalized stage performance curves are used in presenting the performance characteristics of each stage. General assumptions enable determination of flow path data and stage design performance. Performance of various real compressors is predicted and comparison between prediction and field data validates the usefulness of the present method.

  • The purpose of the present study was to develop the numerical method for predicting the on-design and off-design performance of multistage axial-flow compressors. The aerodynamic properties in blade rows were analyzed by incorporating the streamline curvature method as a quasi 3D analysis with the imperical modeling of exit flow angle and loss coefficients. The present calculation procedure has been tested by applying to 5-stage compressors and good agreement with experiments has been found. The detail analysis of aerodynamic performances has been done on the compression part of the bench-scaled gas turbine engines. The predicted performance map at the variable speedline and flow rates could be used as a guide of the engine operation.

  • The present study concerns a computational study of fully developed laminar flow of a Newtonian fluid through an eccentric annulus with a combined bulk axial flow and inner cylinder rotation. This study considers the identical flow geometry as in the calculation of Escudier et $al.^{(3)}$ An unexpected feature of the calculations for eccentricity ${\varepsilon}$)0.7 is the appearance of a second peak in the axial velocity, located in the narrowing gap. The distribution of the axial component of the surface shear stress has a maximum in the narrowing gap and a minimum in the widening gap.

  • A numerical study on oscillatory thermocapillary flow in half-zone has performed to understand the effect of axial rotation. 2d unsteady code is developed to observe the onset of oscillation. 2cs Silicone oil with Prandtl number of 26.5 is used as a working fluid. The critical temperature difference at onset of oscillation is investigated under the different aspect ratios and rotation modes. It is shown that the onset of oscillation is delayed when aspect ratio reduces and rotating speed increases. The oscillatory flow is strongly reduced under top rotation and co-rotation modes, while it is augmented under bottom rotation and counter-rotation modes. It is thought that interaction between return flow and bottom wall is important to explain the oscillatory flow.

  • Numerical simulation is performed with Denton's code to get pressure loss coefficients in wide range of reverse flow incidence(from -90 degree to +85 degree) for an axial compressor cascade. As a results, it is found that the pressure loss coefficient is increased with incidence and there exist critical incidence which corresponds to the maximum pressure loss coefficient. Pressure loss coefficient with bigger incidence than its critical value is decreased. The effect of increasing incidence in a cascade extremely reduce the mass flow rate by the large flow separation region. Consequently this effect reduce the portion of dynamic pressure in the total pressure loss and beyond the critical incidence the pressure loss coefficient decrease.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the unsteady flow phenomena such as leakage flow and rotating stall which have influences on the performance and stability of an axial flow fan. For this study, unsteady pressure were measured using high frequency pressure transducers mounted on the easing wall of rotor passage and analyzed by Double Phase-Locked Averaging Technique. As the flow rate was reduced to near stall point, the pressure difference between the pressure and the suction side of the blade was increased especially new the leading edge and the lowest pressure zone of suction side was gradually developed. From the result of unsteady pressure field on the casing wall, one period of rotating stall was divided into three zones and the flow characteristics on each zone were described in detail.

  • Burner of Flat Flame type expects the uniform flame distribution and NOx reduction. The characteristics of Flat Flame Burner become different according to swirl number in the burner throat. Experiments were focused on swirl effect by four types of swirler with different swirl numbers (0, 0.26, 0.6 and 1.24). It shows many different flow patterns according to swirl number using PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) method. The flow of burner with swirler is recirculated by pressure difference between its center and outside. Recirculated air makes stable in flame, and reduced pollutant gas. In case of swirl number 0, main flow passes through axial direction. As swirl number increased, The backward flow develops in the center part of burner and Flow gas recirculates. This is caused by radial flow momentum becomes larger than axial flow by swirled air and the pressure at center drops against surrounding. As swirl number increases, the radial and axial velocity was confirmed to be larger than low swirl numbers. And turbulence intensity have similar pattern. The CTRZ(Central Toroidal Recirculation Zone) is shown evidently when y/D=1 and S=1.24. The boundary-layer between main flow and recirculated flow is shown that the width is seen to be decreased as swirl number increased.

  • The experiment using three-dimensional laser Dopperr velocimetery (LDV) measurements and the computation using the Reynolds stress model of the commercial code, FLUENT, were conducted to give a clear understanding on the structure of tip leakage flow in a forward-swept axial-flow fan operating at the maximum efficiency condition. The tip leakage vortex was generated near the position of the minimum wall static pressure, which was located at approximately 12% chord downstream from the leading edge of blade suction side, and developed along the centerline of the pressure trough within the blade passages. A reverse flow between the blade tip region and the casing, induced by tip leakage vortex, acted as a blockage on the through-flow. As a result, high momentum flux was observed below the tip leakage vortex. As the tip leakage vortex proceeded to the aft part of the blade passage, the strength of tip leakage vortex decreased due to the strong interaction with the through-flow and casing boundary layer, and the diffusion of tip leakage vortex caused by high turbulence. In comparison with LDV measurement data, the computed results predicted the complex viscous flow patterns inside the tip region, including the locus of tip leakage vortex center, in a reliable level.

  • The comparison of the flow characteristics between circular and swirl jets which were controlled by the spinner attachment inside the airtube were conducted in this study. Swirl jet means a flow in whirls by mixing the flow of axial and tangential direction. Swirl flow has been used for the improvement of the combustion efficiency in the combustor. This flow is controlled by the spinner which has several vanes inclined by certain angles to the axial direction. In this study, angle of vane $30^{\circ}$ and diameter ratio of outlet to inlet of the airtube 0.73 were made. These spec. should find on the general gun type burner built in the domestic small size boiler. As the flow characteristics, axial and tangential velocities were measured by using the 2-D hot-wire velocimeter system and analyzed statistically. And also this research conducted a practical experiment considering to the attached belongings likes as ignitor, nozzle etc. on the airtube of the gun type burner. As a result, swirl occurred at the occasion of beingness and flow region extended considerably toward the radial direction. But effect of swirl did not transmit to the downstream. And the complicated flow was appeared regardless of the existence of spinner because of the effect of belongings.
