  • Hader and Park (1978) introduced the idea of slope rotatability, and Park (1987) introduced the concept of slope rotatability over all directions, and gave necessary and sufficient conditions. Park and Kim (1992) proposed a measure that represent the extent of slope rotatability for a given response surface design. Kim (1993) proposed a measure that represent the extent of slope rotatavility over all directions. In this paper, we embodied the measure of slope rotatability over all directions. Examples of applying this measure to some response surface designs are also given. In this response surface design of slope rotatavility over all directions, we obtain the mean slope variances on the spherical surface to select better experimental design varying the number of center points and radius.

  • A class of multi-factor designs for estimating the slope of second order response surfaces is presented. For multi-factor designs the variance of the estimated slope at a point is a function of the direction of measurement of the slope and the design. If we average the variance over all possible directions, the averaged variance is only a function of the point and the design. By choice of design, it is possible to make this variance constant for all points equidistant from the design origin. This property is called "slope-rotatability over all directions", and the necessary and sufficient conditions for a design to have this property are given and proved. The class of design with this property is mainly discussed.

  • Information on daily maximum air temperature is important in predicting the status of plants and insects, but the uneven and sparse distribution of weather stations prohibits timely access to the data in regions with complex topography. Since cumulative solar irradiance plays a critical role in determining daily maximum temperature on any sloping surfaces, derivation of a quantitative relationship between cumulative solar irradiance and the resultant daily maximum temperature is a prerequisite to development of such estimation models. Air temperatures at 8 sideslope locations with similar elevation and slope angle but aspect, circumventing a cone-shaped, grass-covered parasitic volcano (c.a., 570 m diameter for the bottom circle and 90m bottom-to-top height), were measured from June to December in 2007. Daily maximum temperatures from each location were compared with the average of 8 locations (assumed to be the temperature measured at a "horizontal reference" position). The temperature deviation at all locations increased with the day of year (or sun elevation) from summer solstice to winter solstice. Averaged over the entire period, the south facing location was warmer by $1^{\circ}C$ in daily maximum temperature than "horizontal reference" and the north facing location was cooler by $0.8^{\circ}C$ than the reference, resulting in the year round average south-north temperature difference of $1.8^{\circ}C$. In November, both south and north facing slopes showed the greatest deviation of $+2.0^{\circ}C$ and $-1.3^{\circ}C$, respectively in daily maximum temperature at monthly scale. On a daily scale, the greatest deviation was +3.8 and $2.7^{\circ}C$ at the south and north slope, respectively. The cumulative solar irradiance (on the slope for 4 hours from 11:00 to 15:00 TST) explained >60% of the variance in daily maximum temperature deviations among 8 locations, suggesting a feasibility of developing an estimation model for daily maximum temperature over complex topography at landscape scales.

  • Test-day records (n=13677) sampled from 896 ewes in 5-9 (${\mu}$=7.5) monthly test-days were used to estimate genetic and phenotypic parameters of test-day yields, lactation milk yield (TMY), length of the milking period (DAYS) and three measures of persistency of milk yield in Boutsico dairy sheep. Τhe measures of persistency were the slope of the regression line (${\beta}$), the coefficient of variation (CV) of the test-day milk yields and the maximum to average daily milk yield ratio (MA). The estimates of variance components were obtained under a linear mixed model by restricted maximum likelihood. The heritability of test-day yields ranged from 0.15 to 0.24. DAYS were found to be heritable ($h^2$=0.11). Heritability estimates of ${\beta}$, CV and MA were 0.15, 0.13, 0.10, respectively. Selection for maximum lactation yields is expected to result in prolonged milking periods, high rates of decline of yields after peak production, variable test-day yields and higher litter sizes. Selection for flatter lactation curves would reduce lactation yields, increase slightly the length of the milking period and decrease yield variation as well as litter size. The most accurate prediction of TMY was obtained with a linear regression model with the first five test-day records.

  • A new method of laser remote sensing is proposed, based on sensing the sea surface by a narrow laser beam (2-3cm) and analyzing statistically specular reflections. Construction of the angular dependency of the average density of specks versus the aircraft flight horizontal azimuth allows calculation of both intensity and azimuthal properties of the sea surface spectrum. The paper contains the experimental setup and technique, the field measurement data taken onboard an aircraft and the examples of calculated main statistical parameters of sea waves. Their energy-carrying component velocity is found by the mean velocity of an ensemble of specular points at the random sea surface. The surface wave nonlinearity is shown to affect substantially the statistical characteristics measured: mean numbers of specular areas with th given elevation and given slope, arranged along the line of crossing the sea surface by the scanning laser beam. Experimental measurement of a variance in the number of these areas yields a principal possibility to calculate the correlation function of the sea surface without its preliminary modeling.

  • In South Korea, about 74% of total area is mountainous terrain It is therefore inevitable to make tunnel or cutting slope for road construction. According to a related survey, approximately 2,400 sites of cutting slopes were found from 24 different routes of roadway which is overall 900 km long, implying 2.7 slopes per 1km of roadway on average. Even though safety matter such as the slope failure prevention would be the most important consideration for the construction of cutting slopeslandscape of sloped face is nowadays becoming another important factor due to the growing demand for the driver-friendly road environment Various construction methods which attain this goal should therefore be considered in the design stage of the roadway. The objective of this study is to identify important factors in landscape of sloped-cut roadway using factor analysis. For this, 10 main treatment methods of sloped-cut fact were analyzed. This study employed the LISREL(structural analysis of common variance) model in order to capture the qualitative characteristics of the slope-cut road and examine the relationship between the suey error and the variable(s). As a result, more reasonable landscape evaluation model for the road design and construction was proposed.

  • The measures of contour-terracing with sod has been executed as a major measures for hillside erosion control works for a long time in Korea. It is, however, recognized that pair terracings make a new slope-face having the more steeper degree of slope between the upper and the lower terraces on hillsides and it also does not contribute for establishing the natural vegetation-cover by penetration of pioneer seeds on the slope faces or cut-faces of hillsides. The study was therefore conducted in connection with the above problems on the cut-face having slope of $40^{\circ}$ and 1.6 meter in slope length with clay soils. Plot allocation for the experiment consists of 3 kinds of 3 replica plots having each $1.6m^2$ of slope area, i. e., the control plot with direct seeding on slopes only ($T_1$), the covering plot with the straw-mats after seeding on slopes ($T_2$) and the seeding plot after covering with the straw-mats. ($T_3$). The main results obtained may be summarized as follows : 1. Effects of the straw-mat mulchings on surface soil loss control:-The total amount of soil losses from each treatments are measured as 4,651 gr from $T_1$, 163 gr. from $T_2$ and 2,891 gr. from $T_3$ treatment respectively. (Refer to table No. 2, 3 and 4). In short, it is recognized that effect of $T_2$ treatment is compared as 28.5 times than that of $T_1$ treatment and 17.7 times than that of $T_3$ treatment respectively. Effect of $T_3$ treatment compared with $T_1$ treatment is also such recognizable as 1.6 times in control of surface soil losses on a slope face. 2. Effect of the straw-mat mulchings on soil moisture content on slopes; -Average per cent of surface soil moisture content by treatments show as 21.60 at the $T_1$, 23.04 at the $T_2$ and 22.21 at the $T_3$ treatment respectively and that of subsurface soil moisture content by treatment show as 23.81 at the $T_1$, 26.16 at the $T_2$ and 24.81 at the $T_3$ treatment respectively. The variance of soil moisture content by treatments was highly significant (Refer table No. 7, 8 and 9). 3. Effect of the straw-mat mulchings on vegetation establishment;-Average numbers of germination by treatments are counted as 237 Nos. at the $T_1$, 246 Nos. at the $T_2$ and 262 Nos. at the $T_3$ treatment plots and the vegetation coverage on ground was almost same as about 90% of covers in all treatments. This effect is more or less lower than that of surface soil erosion control. 4. Regarding the effect on surface soil erosion control, the straw-mat mulchings would be effective as a new measures for control of soil erosion on erosion susceptible lands such slope-faced bare-lands as cut-fill faces, mass-movement faces and bare hillsides.

  • The objective of this study was to test the pollutant reduction effect by the silt fence and vegetated ridge through field monitoring. The experiment plots were established with two replication and three treatments. Each plot was designed with 5 m width, 22 m length, and 3 % slope. Flumes with the floating type stage gages were installed at the outlet of each plot to monitor the runoff. For a rainfall monitoring, tipping bucket rain gage was installed within the experiment site. Cultivated crops were spring daikon and autumn chinese cabbage. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that the water quality concentration from three experiment plots were not significantly different in 5 % of significant level. The monitoring results showed that the average pollution loads reduced by silt fence compared to control were SS 75.33 %, TN 40.87 %, TP 56.58 %, BOD 52.12 %, COD 36.07 %, TOC 34.99 %; by vegetated ridge compard to control were SS 65.27 %, TN 81.80 %, TP 54.26 %, BOD 67.09 %, COD 46.55 %, TOC 43.30 %. Analysis of Spearman's rank correlation coefficient showed that BOD-SS and SS-Turbidity were highly related at the silt fence and vegetated ridge plots. In all plots, SS-Turbidity and TP-TN relations were relatively high. The monitoring results showed that the silt fence and vegetated ridge were effect method to reduce the pollutant loads from the field runoff. Long-term monitoring is required to obtain more quantitative reduction effect for diverse crops and to increase the reliability of results.

  • 320 national groundwater monitoring stations have been constructed since 1995 and groundwater levels are measured automatically 4 times a day at each well. It has a difficulty to estimate an average recharge rate of watershed using the recharge rate of the monitoring site because of the lack of its representative on converting a point recharge rate into a spatial one. In this study, the relations between site characteristics (topography, hydraulics, geology, facilities, etc.) and recharge rates of 223 monitoring sites, which were selected using cluster analysis, were analyzed using statistical methods, and finally, regression models were constructed for a recharge rate estimation of non-measured areas. The independent variables for these simple regression models, 1) width of adjacent stream, 2) distance to the nearest stream, 3) topographic slope, and 4) rock type, are proposed using analysis of variance. These models have lots of advantages such as an easy data collection from topographic and geologic maps, a few input variables, and also simplicity in use. Suitability analysis from the comparison between estimation values and original ones at monitoring sites shows that these models are useful for a groundwater recharge estimation.

  • The management of soil chemical properties is very important to sustainable agriculture of many horticultural crops, including cucumber. This study was conducted to find the optimal soil properties of environmentally friendly agriculture in controlled horticulture. Soil chemical properties of 267 samples were collected from soil in Chungnam Province. The average of pH, EC, OM, available $P_2O_5$, exchangeable K, Ca, and Mg was 6.1, $5.38dS\;m^{-1}$, $34g\;kg^{-1}$, $1,321mg\;kg^{-1}$, $1.50cmol_c\;kg{-1}$, $10.3cmol_c\;kg{-1}$, and $3.4cmol_c\;kg{-1}$, respectively. The organic matter content in silty clay loam was significantly higher than in the other soil textures, whereas the pH, EC, exchangeable K, and Mg in loamy fine sand showed significantly lower among soil textures. The EC value and exchangeable Mg concentration were highest in mountain foot-slope soils. The frequency distribution within optimum range of soil chemical properties was 26.2%, 30.3%, 2.3%, 3.8%, 3.4%, and 6.7% for pH, OM, available $P_2O_5$, exchangeable K, Ca, and Mg, respectively. Especially, excessive portion of available $P_2O_5$ and exchangeable Ca were 94.0% and 94.4%, respectively. The EC value and organic matter content of soil samples were positive correlation with all chemical properties except soil pH. In principle component analysis of chemical properties in soil samples, the percentage of variance explained by PC 1 was 52.2%, while PC 2 explained 21.3% of the variance, for a cumulative total of 73.5%. In conclusion, these results are considered to improve soil nutrient management for sustainable controlled horticulture.
