In this study, we evaluated the efficiency of using sulfur-$CaCO_3$ complex pellet in the sulfur oxidizing autotrophic denitrification process for synthetic wastewater with high $CaCO_3$ concentration. The sulfur-$CaCO_3$ complex pellet was packed in reactor(R4). Influent ${NO_3}^--N$ loading rate was from 200 to $1,000g/m^3{\cdot}day$. During the operation, average denitrification efficiency of R4 was above 95%. Particularly, the denitrififation rate at $1,000g/m^3{\cdot}day$ loading was 98.96% for R4. High ${NO_3}^--N$ removal efficiency was determined in R4 compared with other reactors. Through $Ca^{2+}$ and alkalinity analyses, we calculated the supplied alkalinity from the packed $CaCO_3$ in the reactor. Sulfur-$CaCO_3$ complex pellet more effectively supplied alkalinity through the dissociation of $CaCO_3$ as compared with other media. Based on these results, sulfur-$CaCO_3$ complex pellet increased the pH buffering capacity while also providing the carbon source to the denitrifying bacteria. Denitrification efficiency of R4 was also higher than other reactors. ESEM pictures of sulfur-$CaCO_3$ complex pellet show higher porosity than that of the granular sulfur. Hence, more denitrifying bacteria attached on the sulfur-$CaCO_3$ complex pellet than on granular sulfur. It can be concluded that the sulfur-$CaCO_3$ complex pellet is a more suitable media for a sulfur oxidizing autotrophic denitrification process as it provides high denitrification efficiency.
Freshwater algae make up a very important portion of the autotrophic component of the aquatic food web. Therefore, the study of freshwater algal structure and biomass is central to aquatic ecosystem studies. Due to variations in cell shape and size for each species (or taxon) and survey site, cell abundance (or cell numbers per chosen volume) often leads to misrepresentation of the true importance of some species because of the great differences in size of various algae. Thus, it is necessary to investigate the freshwater algal species of a site in order to calculate the cell volume. Although direct cell counting, species volume measurement, as well as biomass calculation are time-consuming and requiring specialists in taxonomy.
Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) have been suggested as a new technology for wastewater treatment while accomplishing energy and chemical generation. This study describes the performance of BESs based on mixed culture that are capable of reducing carbon dioxide to acetate. The cathode potential was a critical factor that affected the performance of the BESs. The rate of acetate production increased as the electrode potential became more negative, from 0.38 mM $d^{-1}$ (-900 mV vs. Ag/AgCl) to 2.35 mM $d^{-1}$ (-1,100 mV), while the electron recovery efficiency of carbon dioxide reduction to acetate increased from 53.6% to 89.5%. The microbial population was dominated by relatives of Acetobacterium woodii when a methanogenic inhibitor was added to the BESs initially.
The growth of the algae strains Neochloris oleabundans, Botryococcus Braunii and Dunaliella sp. under mixotrophic conditions in the presence of different concentrations of crude glycerol was evaluated with the objective of increasing the biomass growth and algal oil content. A high biomass concentration was characteristic of these strains when grown on crude glycerol compared to autotrophic growth, and 5 g/L glycerol yielded the highest biomass concentration for these strains. Mixotrophic conditions improved both the growth of the microalgae and the accumulation of triacylglycerols (TAGs). The maximum amount of TAGs in the algal strains was obtained in the 5 g/L glycerol growth medium. The fatty acid profiles of the oil for the cultures met the necessary requirements and are promising resources for biofuel production.

To examine the denitrification process in an alluvial aquifer in the Cheonan site, hydrological and hydrogeochemical studies were carried out. Elevated levels of NO$_3$ (maximum 77.6 mg/L) were observed in shallow groundwaters of the area, as a result of poultry and agricultural activity. However, the nitrate concentrations were found to be consistently attenuated down to very low levels (<1.0 mg/L). The abrupt removal of nitrate coincided with the pattern of redox change and indicated that denitrification is the most plausible process. The hydrochemistry and mass balance approach using geochemical modeling (phreeqc 2.0) and redox chemistry indicated that chemo-autotrophic denitrification via pyrite oxidation is the key Process to control the nitrate attenuation in the study area.
Microalgal bioremediation of CO2, nutrients, endocrine disruptors, hydrocarbons, pesticides, and cyanide compounds have evaluated comprehensively. Microalgal mitigation of nutrients originated from municipal wastewaters, surface waters, and livestock wastewaters has shown great applicability. Algal utilization on secondary and tertiary treatment processes might provide unique and elegant solution on the removing of substances originated from various sources. Microalgae have displayed 3 growth regimes (autotrophic, heterotrophic, and mixotrophic) through which different organic and inorganic substances are being utilized for growth and production of different metabolites. There are still some technology challenges requiring innovative solutions. Strain selection investigation should be directed towards identification of algal that are extremophiles. Understanding and manipulation of metabolic pathways of algae will possible unfold solution to utilization of algae for mitigation of dissolve organic nitrogen in wastewaters.
The distribution of microzooplankton and hydrographic variables were measured in the Virginia portion of Chesapeake Bay and its major rivers. Samples were collected at 14 locations at monthly interval from September 1993 through December 1995. Ciliates were numerically dominated (>90%) and copepod nauplii comprised highest proportion of the total microzooplankton biomass (>77%). Copepod nauplii and ciliates were the most abundant at oligohaline water and rotifers at freshwater. Total microzooplankton density and biomass were usually higher at oligohaline stations than fresh water and polyhaline stations. Despite high nutrient concentration and phytoplankton density at eutrophic water, micro- and mesozooplankton biomass were low. Mesozooplankton were relatively abundant at polyhaline stations. The comparison between annual mean biomass of ciliates (12.7 ${\mu$}gC/1) and that of autotrophic picoplankton (13.5 {$\mu$}gC/1) revealed that ciliates were a major consumer of picoplankton production. The secondary production by ciliates was 12.7 ${\mu}$gC/1/day, representing 5% of the annual mean primary production in Chesapeake Bay, Total microzooplankton comprised 84% of the total zooplankton carbon content, representing five times higher than mesozooplankton biomass.
The focus of this study was to observe the growth of Chlorella vulgaris and Botryococcus braunii under mixotrophic conditions (i.e., added acorn) with the aim of increasing biomass and triacylglycerols (TAGs) content. The result of investigation indicated that the acorn contains a lot of carbonate (87.29%) and glucose (97.99 mg%). A significant growth of biomass was obtained when grown in acorn rich environment comparing to autotrophic conditions. 3 g/L acorn yielded the highest biomass concentration for these strains. Thus, the biomass productivity with 3 g/L acorn was obtained 2.31 times and 2.10 times higher than that of authotrophic conditions for Chlorella vulgaris and Botryococcus braunii, respectively. The maximum amount of TAGs was reached 14.35% and 18.41% for Chlorella vulgaris and Botryococcus braunii, respectively, in the growth medium with 5 g/L acorn. The effect of acorn could enhance the investigated microalgae growth, biomass productivity and TAGs content. This provides a feasible way to reduce the cost of bioenergy production from microalgae.
Microbial production of L-phenylalanine using Corynebacterium glutamicum ATCC 21674, a tyrosine auxotroph resistant to aromatic amino acid analogues, has been studied and kinetic analysis was performed. Even though the strain was reported as a tyrosine auxotroph, it produced tyrosine and was able to grow on the minimal medium where no tyrosine was present. The average specific growth rate at the exponential growth phase was 0.087 hr-1. There was a dissociation of growth from the formation of the product. Linear correlation between biomass production and total CO2 production was obtained. The relationship between CO2 evolution rate and sugar consumption rate was also found to be linear.
The growth of T. novellus in auto trophic and geterotrophic media was studied to determine the time required for cells to enter stationary phase and relative percentage of ribosomal proteins. When T. novellus was grown autotrophically, growth proceeded at a slow rate characteristic of autotrophs and did not enter log phase until the end of the first day. Logarithmic growth proceeded for 3-4 days at which time the cells entered the stationary phase. In particular, logarithmic growth was accompanied by decreasing pH of culture media and in the stationary phase the pH levelled off at 6.0, a decrease of 1.6 pH value compared to original pH of media. The pH decrease was greatest during log phase when cells oxidized thiosulfate to $H_{2}$$SO_{4}$. The doubling time was about 26h. In heterotrophic media growth proceeded at a much faster rate and cells entered stationary phase 20-22h after inoculation. The doubling time was 3h. The protein content of the ribosomes in T. novellus grown heterotrophically was 4.2% greater than those from the organism grown autotrophically.
