Development of Interlocking Signal Simulator for Verification of Naval Warship Engineering Control Logics (함정 통합기관제어체계의 제어로직 검증을 위한 연동신호 시뮬레이터 개발)

  • ECS is a control device so that the warship can perform the mission stably by controlling and monitoring the entire propulsion system. As the recent provisions of the warship, it's propelling system is complicated than past, as the demand performance and mission of the warships are diverse. In accordance with the complicated propulsion system configuration, the demand for automatic control function of the ECS is increasing for convenient and stable propulsion system control for convenient and stable. As a result, verification of ECS stability and reliability is required. In this paper, we develop an interlocking signal simulator for verifying ECS control logic and communication protocol for warship with CODLOG propulsion systems. The simulator developed was implemented to simulate a signal of gas turbine, propulsion motors, diesel generator and 11 kinds of auxiliary equipment. The reliability of ECS was verified through the ECS communication program and the I/O signal static test with the simulator.

Image-Based Automatic Bridge Component Classification Using Deep Learning (딥러닝을 활용한 이미지 기반 교량 구성요소 자동분류 네트워크 개발)

  • Most bridges in Korea are over 20 years old, and many problems linked to their deterioration are being reported. The current practice for bridge inspection mainly depends on expert evaluation, which can be subjective. Recent studies have introduced data-driven methods using building information modeling, which can be more efficient and objective, but these methods require manual procedures that consume time and money. To overcome this, this study developed an image-based automaticbridge component classification network to reduce the time and cost required for converting the visual information of bridges to a digital model. The proposed method comprises two convolutional neural networks. The first network estimates the type of the bridge based on the superstructure, and the second network classifies the bridge components. In avalidation test, the proposed system automatically classified the components of 461 bridge images with 96.6 % of accuracy. The proposed approach is expected to contribute toward current bridge maintenance practice.

  • Unknown geotechnical characteristics are key challenges in the design of piles for the plant, civil and building works. Although the N-values which were read through the standard penetration test are important, those N-values of the whole area are not likely acquired in common practice. In this study, the N-value is predicted by means of regression analysis with artificial intelligence (AI). Big data is important to improve learning performance of AI, so circular augmentation method is applied to build up the big data at the current study. The optimal model was chosen among applied AI algorithms, such as artificial neural network, decision tree and auto machine learning. To select optimal model among the above three AI algorithms is to minimize the margin of error. To evaluate the method, actual data and predicted data of six performed projects in Poland, Indonesia and Malaysia were compared. As a result of this study, the AI prediction of this method is proven to be reliable. Therefore, it is realized that the geotechnical characteristics of non-boring points were predictable and the optimal arrangement of structure could be achieved utilizing three dimensional N-value distribution map.

Accuracy evaluation of liver and tumor auto-segmentation in CT images using 2D CoordConv DeepLab V3+ model in radiotherapy

  • Medical image segmentation is the most important task in radiation therapy. Especially, when segmenting medical images, the liver is one of the most difficult organs to segment because it has various shapes and is close to other organs. Therefore, automatic segmentation of the liver in computed tomography (CT) images is a difficult task. Since tumors also have low contrast in surrounding tissues, and the shape, location, size, and number of tumors vary from patient to patient, accurate tumor segmentation takes a long time. In this study, we propose a method algorithm for automatically segmenting the liver and tumor for this purpose. As an advantage of setting the boundaries of the tumor, the liver and tumor were automatically segmented from the CT image using the 2D CoordConv DeepLab V3+ model using the CoordConv layer. For tumors, only cropped liver images were used to improve accuracy. Additionally, to increase the segmentation accuracy, augmentation, preprocess, loss function, and hyperparameter were used to find optimal values. We compared the CoordConv DeepLab v3+ model using the CoordConv layer and the DeepLab V3+ model without the CoordConv layer to determine whether they affected the segmentation accuracy. The data sets used included 131 hepatic tumor segmentation (LiTS) challenge data sets (100 train sets, 16 validation sets, and 15 test sets). Additional learned data were tested using 15 clinical data from Seoul St. Mary's Hospital. The evaluation was compared with the study results learned with a two-dimensional deep learning-based model. Dice values without the CoordConv layer achieved 0.965 ± 0.01 for liver segmentation and 0.925 ± 0.04 for tumor segmentation using the LiTS data set. Results from the clinical data set achieved 0.927 ± 0.02 for liver division and 0.903 ± 0.05 for tumor division. The dice values using the CoordConv layer achieved 0.989 ± 0.02 for liver segmentation and 0.937 ± 0.07 for tumor segmentation using the LiTS data set. Results from the clinical data set achieved 0.944 ± 0.02 for liver division and 0.916 ± 0.18 for tumor division. The use of CoordConv layers improves the segmentation accuracy. The highest of the most recently published values were 0.960 and 0.749 for liver and tumor division, respectively. However, better performance was achieved with 0.989 and 0.937 results for liver and tumor, which would have been used with the algorithm proposed in this study. The algorithm proposed in this study can play a useful role in treatment planning by improving contouring accuracy and reducing time when segmentation evaluation of liver and tumor is performed. And accurate identification of liver anatomy in medical imaging applications, such as surgical planning, as well as radiotherapy, which can leverage the findings of this study, can help clinical evaluation of the risks and benefits of liver intervention.

  • Owing to the increasing demand for electric vehicles (EVs), appropriate management of their waste batteries is required urgently for scrapped vehicles or for addressing battery aging. With respect to technological developments, data-driven diagnosis of waste EV batteries and management technologies have drawn increasing attention. Moreover, robot-based automatic dismantling technologies, which are seemingly interesting, require industrial verifications and linkages with future battery-related database systems. Among these, it is critical to develop and disseminate various advanced battery diagnosis and assessment techniques to improve the efficiency and safety/environment of the recirculation of waste batteries. Incorporation of lithium-related chemical substances in the public pollutant release and transfer register (PRTR) database as well as in-depth risk assessment of gas emissions in waste EV battery combustion and their relevant fire safety are some of the necessary steps. Further research and development thus are needed for optimizing the lifecycle management of waste batteries from various aspects related to data-based diagnosis/classification/disassembly processes as well as reuse/recycling and final disposal. The idea here is that the data should contribute to clean design and manufacturing to reduce the environmental burden and facilitate reuse/recycling in future production of EV batteries. Such optimization should also consider the future technological and market trends.

A Feasibility Study on the Development of Multifunctional Radar Software using a Model-Based Development Platform (모델기반 통합 개발 플랫폼을 이용한 다기능 레이다 소프트웨어 개발의 타당성 연구)

  • Software development involves a series of stages, including requirements analysis, design, implementation, unit testing, and integration testing, similar to those used in the system engineering process. This study utilized MathWorks' model-based design platform to develop multi-function radar software and evaluated its feasibility and efficiency. Because the development of conventional radar software is performed by a unit algorithm rather than in an integrated form, it requires additional efforts to manage the integrated software, such as requirement analysis and integrated testing. The mode-based platform applied in this paper provides an integrated development environment for requirements analysis and allocation, algorithm development through simulation, automatic code generation for deployment, and integrated requirements testing, and result management. With the platform, we developed multi-level models of the multi-function radar software, verified them using test harnesses, managed requirements, and transformed them into hardware deployable language using the auto code generation tool. We expect this Model-based integrated development to reduce errors from miscommunication or other human factors and save on the development schedule and cost.

  • 한국의 고문헌 중에는 다양한 고천문 기록들이 한문 형태로 존재하며, 이를 학술적으로 활용하기 위해서는 전문 번역가 투입에 따른 많은 비용과 시간이 요구된다. 이에 인공신경망 기계학습에 의한 인공지능 번역기를 개발하여 비록 초벌 번역 수준일지라도 문장 형태의 한문을 한글로 자동번역해 주는 학술 도구를 소개하고자 한다. 이 자동번역기는 한국천문연구원이 한국정보화진흥원이 주관하는 2019년도 Information and Communication Technology 기반 공공서비스 촉진사업에 한국고전번역원과 공동 참여하여 개발 완료한 것이다. 이 연구는 고천문 도메인에 특화된 인공지능 기계학습용 데이터인 천문 고전 코퍼스를 구축하여 이를 기반으로 천문 고전 특화 자동번역 모델을 개발하고 번역 서비스하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 구축되는 시스템은 크게 세 가지이다. 첫째, 로그인이 필요 없이 누구나 웹 접속을 통해 사용이 가능한 클라우드 기반의 고문헌 자동번역 대국민서비스 시스템이다. 둘째, 참여 기관별로 구축된 코퍼스와 도메인 특화된 번역 모델의 생성 및 관리할 수 있는 클라우드 기반의 대기관 서비스 플랫폼 구축이다. 셋째, 개발된 자동번역 Applied Programmable Interface를 활용한 한국천문연구원 내 자체 서비스가 가능한 AITHA 시스템이다. 연구 결과로서 먼저 구축된 천문 고전 코퍼스 60,760건에 대한 샘플링 검수 결과는 품질 순도 99.9% 이상이다. 아울러 도출된 천문 고전 특화 번역 모델 총 20개 중 대표 모델에 대한 성능 평가 결과는 기계 번역 텍스트 품질 평가 알고리즘인 Bilingual Evaluation Understudy 평가에서 40.02점이며, 전문가에 의한 휴먼 평가에서 5.0 만점 중 4.05점이다. 이는 당초 연구 목표로 삼았던 초벌 번역 수준에 충분하며, 현재 개발된 시스템들은 자체 시험 운영 중이다. 이 연구는 특수 고문헌에 해당되는 고천문 기록들의 번역 장벽을 낮춰 관련 연구자들의 학술적 접근 및 다양한 연구에 도움을 줄 수 있다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 또한 고천문 분야가 인공지능 자동번역 확산 플랫폼 시범의 첫 케이스로써 추후 타 학문 분야 참여 시 시너지 효과도 기대해 볼 수 있다. 고문헌 자동번역기는 점차 더 많은 학습 데이터와 학습량이 쌓일수록 더 좋은 학술 도구로 진화할 것이다.

A Case Study on Metadata Extractionfor Records Management Using ChatGPT (챗GPT를 활용한 기록관리 메타데이터 추출 사례연구)

  • Metadata is a crucial component of record management, playing a vital role in properly managing and understanding the record. In cases where automatic metadata assignment is not feasible, manual input by records professionals becomes necessary. This study aims to alleviate the challenges associated with manual entry by proposing a method that harnesses ChatGPT technology for extracting records management metadata elements. To employ ChatGPT technology, a Python program utilizing the LangChain library was developed. This program was designed to analyze PDF documents and extract metadata from records through questions, both with a locally installed instance of ChatGPT and the ChatGPT online service. Multiple PDF documents were subjected to this process to test the effectiveness of metadata extraction. The results revealed that while using LangChain with ChatGPT-3.5 turbo provided a secure environment, it exhibited some limitations in accurately retrieving metadata elements. Conversely, the ChatGPT-4 online service yielded relatively accurate results despite being unable to handle sensitive documents for security reasons. This exploration underscores the potential of utilizing ChatGPT technology to extract metadata in records management. With advancements in ChatGPT-related technologies, safer and more accurate results are expected to be achieved. Leveraging these advantages can significantly enhance the efficiency and productivity of tasks associated with managing records and metadata in archives.

Deep learning-based automatic segmentation of the mandibular canal on panoramic radiographs: A multi-device study

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to propose a deep-learning model for the detection of the mandibular canal on dental panoramic radiographs. Materials and Methods: A total of 2,100 panoramic radiographs (PANs) were collected from 3 different machines: RAYSCAN Alpha (n=700, PAN A), OP-100 (n=700, PAN B), and CS8100 (n=700, PAN C). Initially, an oral and maxillofacial radiologist coarsely annotated the mandibular canals. For deep learning analysis, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) utilizing U-Net architecture were employed for automated canal segmentation. Seven independent networks were trained using training sets representing all possible combinations of the 3 groups. These networks were then assessed using a hold-out test dataset. Results: Among the 7 networks evaluated, the network trained with all 3 available groups achieved an average precision of 90.6%, a recall of 87.4%, and a Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 88.9%. The 3 networks trained using each of the 3 possible 2-group combinations also demonstrated reliable performance for mandibular canal segmentation, as follows: 1) PAN A and B exhibited a mean DSC of 87.9%, 2) PAN A and C displayed a mean DSC of 87.8%, and 3) PAN B and C demonstrated a mean DSC of 88.4%. Conclusion: This multi-device study indicated that the examined CNN-based deep learning approach can achieve excellent canal segmentation performance, with a DSC exceeding 88%. Furthermore, the study highlighted the importance of considering the characteristics of panoramic radiographs when developing a robust deep-learning network, rather than depending solely on the size of the dataset.

  • When cavitation noise occurs in ship propellers, the level of underwater radiated noise abruptly increases, which can be a critical threat factor as it increases the probability of detection, particularly in the case of naval vessels. Therefore, accurately and promptly assessing cavitation signals is crucial for improving the survivability of submarines. Traditionally, techniques for determining cavitation occurrence have mainly relied on assessing acoustic/vibration levels measured by sensors above a certain threshold, or using the Detection of Envelop Modulation On Noise (DEMON) method. However, technologies related to this rely on a physical understanding of cavitation phenomena and subjective criteria based on user experience, involving multiple procedures, thus necessitating the development of techniques for early automatic recognition of cavitation signals. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that automatically detects cavitation occurrence based on simple statistical features reflecting cavitation characteristics extracted from acoustic signals measured by sensors attached to the hull. The performance of the proposed technique is evaluated depending on the number of sensors and model test conditions. It was confirmed that by sufficiently training the characteristics of cavitation reflected in signals measured by a single sensor, the occurrence of cavitation signals can be determined.
