Pipe-cutting machines have been used in many fields. Recently, an automatic pipe-cutting machine that uses magnet has born developed. In this paper, a magnetic-type automatic pipe-cutting machine that attaches itself and performs unmanned cutting process is proposed. It is designed that there is a room at the bottom of its body to contain a magnet. And it uses magnetic force between the magnet and the pipe surface to prevent slip and to attach the machine to the pipe against gravity. Also the magnetic force is adjustable by changing the gap between the magnet and the pipe. This machine is, however, necessary to control cutting velocity for the elevation of work efficiency and the adjustable faculties. During pipe cutting process, the gravity acting on the pipe-cutting machine widely varies. That is, the cutting machine gets fast when moving from the top to the bottom of the pipe and slow when moving from the bottom to the top. Actually the system is kind of a non-linear system where the gravity is function of climbing angle of the cutting machine along the pipe. Especially jerking motion is critical. Therefore, authors design the non-linear controller that estimates the current position of the machine along the pipe and compensates the effect of gravity in this paper. It receives the feed back signal from the encoder.
In this study, we estimate parameters of a distributed hydrologic model, GRM (grid based rainfall-runoff model), using a model-independent parameter estimation tool, PEST. We implement auto calibration of model parameters such as initial soil moisture, multipliers of overland roughness and soil hydraulic conductivity in the Geumho River Catchment and the Gamcheon Catchment using radar rainfall estimates and ground-observed rainfall represented by Thiessen interpolation. Automatic calibration is performed by GRM-MP (multiple projects), a modified version of GRM without GUI (graphic user interface) implementation, and "Parallel PEST" to improve estimation efficiency. Although ground rainfall shows similar or higher cumulative amount compared to radar rainfall in the areal average, high spatial variation is found only in radar rainfall. In terms of accuracy of hydrologic simulations, radar rainfall is equivalent or superior to ground rainfall. In the case of radar rainfall, the estimated multiplier of soil hydraulic conductivity is lower than 1, which may be affected by high rainfall intensity of radar rainfall. Other parameters such as initial soil moisture and the multiplier of overland roughness do not show consistent trends in the calibration results. Overall, calibrated parameters show different patterns in radar and ground rainfall, which should be carefully considered in the rainfall-runoff modelling applications using radar rainfall.

This paper presents an automatic tuning method for parameters of a multivaiable self-tuning velocity-type PID controller which adapts to changes in the system parameters with time delays and noises. The velocity-type PID control structure is determined in the process of minimizing the variance of the auxiliarly output, and self-tuning effect is achieved through the recursive least square algorithm at the parameter estimation stage and also through the Robbins-Monro algorithm at the stage of optiminzing the design parameters of the controller. The proposed PID type multivariable self-tuning method is simple andeffective compared with other esisting multivariable self-tuning methods. Computer simulation has shown that the proposed algorithm is beter than the trial-and-error method in the tracking performance.

Calibration of Engine models is a painstaking process but very important for successful application to automotive industry problems. A combined heuristic and machine learning approach has therefore been adopted to improve the efficiency of model calibration. We developed an intelligent calibration program called ICALIB. It has been used on a daily basis for engine model applications, and has reduced the time required for model calibrations from many hours to a few minutes on average. In this paper, we describe the heuristic control strategies employed in ICALIB such as a hill-climbing search based on a state distance estimation function, incremental problem solution refinement by using a dynamic tolerance window, and calibration target parameter ordering for guiding the search. In addition, we present the application of amachine learning program called GID3*for automatic acquisition of heuristic rules for ordering target parameters.
Automatic object recognition in 3D measuring data is of great interest in many application fields e.g. computer vision, reverse engineering and digital factory. In this paper we present a software tool for a fully automatic object detection and parameter estimation in unordered and noisy point clouds with a large number of data points. The software consists of three interactive modules each for model selection, point segmentation and model fitting, in which the orthogonal distance fitting (ODF) plays an important role. The ODF algorithms estimate model parameters by minimizing the square sum of the shortest distances between model feature and measurement points. The local quadric surface fitted through ODF to a randomly touched small initial patch of the point cloud provides the necessary initial information for the overall procedures of model selection, point segmentation and model fitting. The performance of the presented software tool will be demonstrated by applying to point clouds.

To prevent pollution from ships, the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) is a mandatory guideline for all new ships. The Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) has also been applied by MARPOL to all existing ships. SEEMP provides the Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI) for monitoring the operational efficiency of a ship. By monitoring the EEOI, the shipowner or operator can establish strategic plans, such as routing, hull cleaning, decommissioning, new building, etc. The key parameter in calculating EEOI is Fuel Oil Consumption (FOC). It can be measured on board while a ship is operating. This means that only the shipowner or operator can calculate the EEOI of their own ships. If the EEOI can be calculated without the actual FOC, however, then the other stakeholders, such as the shipbuilding company and Class, or others who don't have the measured FOC, can check how efficiently their ships are operating compared to other ships. In this study, we propose a method to estimate the EEOI without requiring the actual FOC. The Automatic Identification System (AIS) data, ship static data, and environment data that can be publicly obtained are used to calculate the EEOI. Since the public data are of large capacity, big data technologies, specifically Hadoop and Spark, are used. We verify the proposed method using actual data, and the result shows that the proposed method can estimate EEOI from public data without actual FOC.

This study proposes a novel feature point initialization method in order to improve the accuracy of feature point positions by fusing a vision sensor and a lidar. The initialization is a process that determines three dimensional positions of feature points through two dimensional image data, which has a direct influence on performance of a 6-DoF bearing-only SLAM. Prior to the initialization, an extrinsic calibration method which estimates rotational and translational relationships between a vision sensor and lidar using multiple calibration tools was employed, then the feature point initialization method based on the estimated extrinsic calibration parameters was presented. In this process, in order to improve performance of the accuracy of the initialized feature points, an iterative automatic scaling parameter tuning technique was presented. The validity of the proposed feature point initialization method was verified in a 6-DoF bearing-only SLAM framework through an indoor and outdoor tests that compare estimation performance with the previous initialization method.
A model predictive control method is applied to design an automatic controller for thermal power control in a reactor core. The basic concept of the model predictive control is to solve an optimization problem for a finite future at current time and to implement as the current control input only the first optimal control input among the solutions of the finite time steps. At the next time step, the second optimal control input is not implemented and the procedure to solve the optimization problem is then repeated. The objectives of the proposed model predictive controller are to minimize the difference between the output and the desired output and the variation of the control rod position. The nonlinear PWR plant model (a nonlinear point kinetics equation with six delayed neutron groups and the lumped thermal-hydraulic balance equations) is used to verify the proposed controller of reactor power. And a controller design model used for designing the model predictive controller is obtained by applying a parameter estimation algorithm at an initial stage. From results of numerical simulation to check the controllability of the proposed controller at the $5\%/min$ ramp increase or decrease of a desired load and its $10\%$ step increase or decrease which are design requirements, the performances of this controller are proved to be excellent.

The widely used control theory based design of PI family controllers fails to perform satisfactorily under parameter variation, nonlinear or load disturbance. In high performance applications, it is useful to automatically extract the complex relation that represent the drive behaviour. The use of learning through example algorithms can be a powerful tool for automatic modelling variable speed drives. They can automatically extract a functional relationship representative of the drive behavior. These methods present some advantages over the classical ones since they do not rely on the precise knowledge of mathematical models and parameters. The paper proposes high performance speed and current control of synchronous reluctance motor(SynRM) drive using adaptive learning mechanism-fuzzy neural network (ALM-FNN) and fuzzy logic control (FLC) controller. The proposed controller is developed to ensure accurate speed and current control of SynRM drive under system disturbances and estimation of speed using artificial neural network(ANN) controller. Also, this paper proposes the analysis results to verify the effectiveness of the ALM-FNN, FLC and ANN controller.
This paper presents a PID automatic gain-tuning algorithm for the electronic throttle valve which is driven by wire. Since the system characteristics of position control for electronic throttle valve are so complicated that both the real time robustness and the manufacturing cost must be considered for mass production. To resolve this paradox, a kind of algorithm called RLS (Recursive Least Square) is adopted for the control of the ETB (Electronic Throttle Body). Using this algorithm, the PID gains can be adjusted automatically with the estimated system parameters. Furthermore, a pre-filter is supplemented for the sake of the robustness against the friction and loads. From the industrial requests for the system, the design specifications are decided as follows: the settling time should be less than 1sec and the overshoot should be kept below 3%. The results of the experiments based on this approach show that the high robustness can be achieved while the system stability is satisfied steadily. A parameter estimation scheme and a gain-tuning algorithm have been properly combined and utilized in this research and the effectiveness is verified through the real experiments.
