  • Purpose: To develop more accurate wet measuring system combining the wet cell, automatic lensmeter and the related software for hydrophilic contact lenses and to verify the accuracy of those measuring holder system already available in the market. Methods: Refractive power measurement were done in both a conventional method which has been commonly used in optical shops and a new method which is recently developed in korea. Hydrophilic contact lens of korean brand was chosen as a test material and was tested by water content ratio and by spherical refractive power. Results: When spherical power of -3.00 D contact lens is measured in the newly developed wet cell measurement holder with automatic lensmeter, it reads -3.01 D at water content ratio of 38%. -3.00 D at 45% and -2.98 D at 58%. The same experiment with the Poster soft contact lens wet cell measurement holder maintaining other conditions same resulted in -3.60 D at the water content ratio of 38%, -3.06 D at 45% and -2.46 D at 58%. Conclusions: At the higher water content, the refractive power values measured by both of the wet cell measuring holders are shown lower, and additionally, the new method using the wet cell holder and new software program in a automatic lensmeter showed more accurate readings than conventional Poster soft contact lens wet cell measuring system.

  • The measuring point data of clay model are widely used to design parts whose external features are important design factor such as automobiles and general die products. This paper presents a method for improving the process to generate smooth surfaces from the measuring point data using turnkey CAD/CAM system. The process of smooth-surface generation involves several steps: styline finding, curve fairing, surface generation and filleting. The process is improved by automatic curve fairing, local correction of surface and multi-boundary surface treatment. An automobile bumper and a telephone receiver are measured and modeled to test the new method. Significant time saving is resulted by changing interactive mode to automatic mode and eliminating inefficient loop of surface generation process.

  • The purpose of this study is (1) to design and test a database which can be automatically classified, and (2) to generate automatic classification number by processing the keywords in titles using the code combination method of Colon Classification(CC) as well as an automatic recognition of subjects in order to develop an automatic classification system (Auto BC System) based on CC which can be applied to any research library. To conduct this study, 1,510 words in the fields of agricultrue and medicine were selected, analized in terms of [P], [M], [E], [S], [T] employed in CC, and included in a database for classification. For the above-mentioned subject fields, the principle of an automatic classification was specified in order to generate automatic classification codes as well as to perform an automatic subject recognition of the titles included. Whenever necessary, editing, deleting, appending and reindexing of a database can be made in this automatic classification system. Appendix 1 shows the result of the automatic classification of books in the fields of agriculture and medicine. The results of the study are summarized below. 1. The classification number for the title of a book can be automatically generated by using the facet principles of Colon Classification. 2. The automatic subject recognition of a book is achieved by designing a database making use of a globe-principle, and by specifying the subject field for each word. 3. The automatic subject-recognition of input data is achieved by measuring the number of searched words by each subject field. 4. The combination of classification numbers is achieved by flowcharting of classification formular of each subject field. 5. The efficient control of classification numbers is achieved by designing control codes on the database for classification. 6. The automatic classification by means of Auto BC has been proved to be successful in the research library concentrating on a Single field. The general library may have some problem in employing this system. The automatic classification through Auto BC has the following advantages: 1. Speed of the classification process can be improve. 2. The revision or updating of classification schemes can be facilitated. 3. Multiple concepts can be expressed in a single classification code. 4. The consistency of classification can be achieved with the classification formular rather than the classifier's subjective judgement. 5. A user's retrieving process can be made after combining the classification numbers through keywords relating to the material to be searched. 6. The materials can be classified by a librarian without subject backgrounds. 7. The large body of materials can be quickly classified by means of a machine processing. 8. This automatic classification is expected to make a good contribution to design of the total system for library operations. 9. The information flow among libraries can be promoted owing to the use of the same program for the automatic classification.

  • In harvesting rice and barley using combine, the inclination of the body caused by the irregular surface condition of the field and the soil sinking from the unbalanced weight during the grain collection used to make harvesting operation difficult and even impossible. To overcome such a problem, automatic leveling control system for a combine has been developed and tested. The system was composed of the sensor for measuring left and right inclination of the combine chassis and the hydraulic control system. The adaptability of the control system was investigated by analyzing system response in time domain. And the limit angle of the leveling control was set up to be +/- 7$^{\circ}$. The proposed control and hydraulic power system was implemented to the prototype combine. The prototype combine was designed and built as a separable structure with chassis and track. This paper shows results of the leveling performance tested in the laboratory and the grain field.

  • The necessity for more accurate automatic flatness control(AFC) system has increased of customers' requirement for cold rolled steel sheet. Therefore, many cold rolling mills replaced its AFC system with a measuring roll of the contact type form the non-contact type. In this paper. The performance of AFC system of contact type has been investigated under industrial conditions. It has two kinds of actuator: roll bender, spot cooling system. The test results are as follows: The more strip thickness is thick, the smaller the I value, and the more it is thin, the bigger the I value. And a complex distribution of strip tension was controlled, for example, not only a pocket wave but also a simple center wave and edge wave. Because the tension deviation is larger at acceler- ation speed and decelerationspeed than steady speed, AFC system of contact type is better to adopt over 50m/mim. AFC system reduces rapidly large flatness deviation. The maximum I value of strip has been decreased to 13 I, and sticker, defects caused by poor flatness, have been decreased about 60%.

  • Accurate river discharge is the most important factor in managing river basins and for successfully maintaining total maximum daily loads in Korea. It is not easy to measure the discharge directly in large rivers owing to physical and environmental constraints, even after investing much time and money. Recently, to overcome these historical drawbacks in river discharge measurement, we have developed the Automatic Discharge Acquisition & Management System (ADAMS) that scans the river cross-section and measures each cell $(1m{\times}1m)$ velocity using HADCP. The hardware system is composed of an HADCP sensor and winch, as well as a PC and software system for the discharge calculation module and hardware control module. It is controlled remotely via the internet and uses the velocity-depth integration method and the velocity-contour method for calculating river discharges. The characteristics of ADAMS are a ubiquitously accessible system, featuring real time automatic discharge measurement, remote control via the internet. The results using ADAMS at the Jindong stage site show less than 5% uncertainty and are 4 times more efficient than the ADCP & Q-boat system. This system can be used to measure any large river, river mouth or tributary river affected by backwater, all of which have a very difficult measuring real time discharge. The next generation of ADAMS will feature an upgrade to increase portability and GPS integration.

  • In this study, the authors introduce a newly developed flatfish grading system. Owing to the features of flatfish with and wide body, the general types of grading system are not easy to apply for it. Furthermore, the flatfish to be graded is alive such that the existing measurement and grading systems cannot be used for it as well. This study gives a solution for measuring and grading the flatfish with high speed and good accuracy. For this object, the authors developed flatfish measurement and grading system. This system consist of the feeding, conveying, measurement part and sorting part. Especially, the measurement part is made by vision based measuring technique which satisfies the given specification. The result from the experiment shows that the developed system is applicable for measuring and grading the flatfish sizes in variety.

  • Good shape on flat rolled product is necessary to meet today's customer quality requirement. To meet the increasing demand in quality of strip shape from downstream customers, POSCO has replaced the Automatic Shape Control(ASC) system with the existing one that had used noncontact type measuring system at No.2 Cold Rolling Mill, Pohang works in October, 1995. The strip shape is influenced by the profile, roll crown, bending control, skew control system, as well as work roll cooling system. We have used ASC to adjust those factors in Cold Rolling Mill that could get a satisfactory result, almost less than .+-.5 1-unit deviation from the target shape. However, the downstream customer(i.e. Continuos Annealing Line) wants a good shape not only at the moment of exit of roll bite, but after rolling without tension. In this investigation, the difference will be discussed and how deal with this problem.
