The microstructure of the reagion of carters, created by Cu and W-Cu shaped charge jets, in a 1020 mild steel target has been intestiaged. The region ahead of the crater created by the Cu shaped charge jet, reveals dramatic grain refinement implying the occurrence of a dynamic recrystallization, while that of W-Cu one dose a martensitic transformation indicative of heating up to an austenitic region followed by rapid cooling. The impacting pressure calculated when the W-Cu shaped charge jet encounters the target is higher than that of the Cu one. The micro-hardness of the region ahead of the crater created by the W-Cu shaped charge jet is also higher than that of the Cu one. The microstructure of W-Cu slug remained in the inside of the craters depicts the occurrence of the remarkable elongation of W particles during the liner collaphse. From these results, the microstructural variation of the region ahead of the crater with Cu and W-Cu shaped charge jets is discussed in trems of the pressure dependency of the transformation region of ferrite and austenite phases.
This study targets to make clear the connection between MS (Martensite start) point and welding shrinkage. We approved that a Martensite-transformed weldment may not yield state under low MS point, but also admitted the limitation of numerical calculation by inherent strain approach or thermal strain approach. Therefore, new thermal strain formulae during cooling stages were made. As a thermal strain is obtained by integrating thermal extension coefficient, a constant of integration should be decided. In our suggested formulae, the origin was based on totally remained austenite, and added strain from volume changes in Martensite transformation was based on totally transformed ferrite. Through the suggested methodology, It is verified that an MS point under a critical temperature can let weld shrinkage relax and the critical value can be obtained. For supporting this process, 15 weld-consumables were made, were tested by fillet type and were measured. As a result, a positive correlation between MS point and level of weld-distortion was obtained, but it was rather weak.
In this work, a new way of measuring the volume fraction of e martensite in Fe-based alloys has been proposed. Since the specific volume of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite, depending on alloy composition, is smaller than that of austenite i.e ${\gamma}$ phase, volume expansion takes place during ${\varepsilon}{\rightarrow}{\gamma}$ reverse transformation. As the amount of the volume expansion is proportional to the product of specific volume difference times the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite, the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite can be calculated by measuring the volume expansion and the specific volume difference. Such a relationship was confirmed in Fe-21Mn and Fe-32Mn-6Si alloys which undergo ${\gamma}{\rightarrow}{\varepsilon}$ martensitic transformation on cooling and by cold rolling, respectively. It was also found that the former has isotropic ${\varepsilon}$ martensite while the latter has anisotropic ${\varepsilon}$ martensite.
Shape-memory alloys (SMA) have interesting behaviors and important mechanical properties due to the solid-solid phase transformation. These phenomena are dominated by the evolution of microstructures. In recent years, the microstructures in SMAs have been studied extensively and modeled using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. However, it remains difficult to identify the crystal variants in the simulation results, which consist of large numbers of atoms. In the present work, a method is developed to identify the austenite phase and the monoclinic martensite crystal variants in MD results. The transformation matrix of each lattice is calculated to determine the corresponding crystal variant. Evolution of the volume fraction of the crystal variants and the microstructure in Ni-Ti SMAs under thermal and mechanical boundary conditions are examined. The method is validated by comparing MD-simulated interface normals with theoretical solutions. In addition, the results show that, in certain cases, the interatomic potential used in the current study leads to inconsistent monoclinic lattices compared with crystallographic theory. Thus, a specific modification is applied and the applicability of the potential is discussed.
In this article, experimental training of the commercial available shape memory alloy fibre (SMA) fibre under the combined thermomechanical loading is reported. SMA has the ability to sense a small change in temperature (${\geq}10^{\circ}C$) and activated under the external loading and results in shape change. The thermomechanical characteristics of SMA at different temperature and mechanical loading are obtained through an own lab-scale experimental setup. The analysis is conducted for two types of the medium using the liquid nitrogen (cold cycle) and the hot water (heat cycle). The experimental data indicate that SMA act as a normal wire for Martensite phase and activated behavior i.e., regain the original shape during the Austenite phase only. To improve the confidence of such kind of behavior has been verified by inspecting the composition of the wire. The study reveals interesting conclusion i.e., while SMA deviates from the equiatomic structure or consist of foreign materials (carbon and oxygen) except nickel and titanium may affect the phase transformation temperature which shifted the activation phase temperature. Also, the grain structure distortion of SMA wire has been examined via the scanning electron microscope after the thermomechanical cycle loading and discussed in details.
Transformation of austenite to martensite during cold rolling has been widely used to strengthen metastable austenitic stainless steel grades. Aging treatment of cold worked metastable austenitic stainless steels, including ${\alpha}'$-martensite phase, results in the further increase of strength, when aging is performed in $200^{\circ}C$ to $450^{\circ}C$ temperature range. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of time and temperature on the stress-strain behavior of cold worked austenitic stainless steels. The amount of ${\alpha}'$-martensite during cold working and aging was examined by ferrite scope and X-ray diffraction (XRD). During aging at $450^{\circ}C$ for 1hr, tensile strength dramatically increased by 150MPa. Deformed metastable austenitic steels containing the "body-centered" ${\alpha}'$-martensite are strengthened by the diffusion of interstitial solute atoms during aging at low temperature.
In this study, three cold-rolled TRIP steels containing different Al content (0.04wt%, 1.0 wt.% and 2.00wt%) were fabricated to understand the complex effects of Al in TRIP steel. The influences of Al on microstructural evolution of cold-rolled TRIP steels have been analyzed by using advanced analysis techniques, such as transmission electron microscope (TEM) and three dimensional atom probe tomography (3D-APT). TEM results revealed that second phases such as bainte and retained austenite decrease with increase of Al content. In addition, 3D-APT was used to characterize atomic-scale distribution of alloying elements at the constituent phases. Through these analysis techniques, the advanced characteristics of constituent microstructure in TRIP steels were identified depending on Al contents in TRIP steels.

This paper deals with an evaluation of the residual stress due to shot peening induced in a car¬burized gear tooth and its application to the fatigue crack propagation problem. The residual stress is estimated based on the assumption that the main cause of residual stress is the volume difference between the case and core due to martensitic transformation in cooling, and the influ¬ence of both the reduction of retained austenite and the strain in the surface layer induced by shot peening are considered. The reliability of the method is examined by comparison with stresses measured by the X-ray diffraction method. The stresses intensity factors are computed by the influence function method and the reduction of the factor due to the residual stress is demonstrat¬ed and discussed based on the fracture mechanics.
This paper deals with the residual stress of carburized spur gears is calculated being on the assumption that the main cause of residual stress is the volume difference between case and core due to the martensitic transformation in cooling. A formula is proposed to estimated the residual stress from the hardness and the amount of retained austenite. The estimated residual stress is close to the stress measured by X-ray method. The estimated residual stress is applied to the analysis of the fracture mechanics of carburized spur gear teeth. The stress intensity factor due to the residual stress is demonstrated. The stress intensity factor is computed by the influence function method, and it is shown that the factor is decreased by the residual stress in Carburized gear tooth.
Ti-Ni-Cu alloy powders were fabricated by ball milling, and the properties of these powders were characterized. Mixed 50Ti-(50-x)Ni-xCu powders of 5 to 10at.%Cu composition were milled for 100 hours using SUS 1/4" balls in argon atmosphere. Ball to powder ratio was 20:1 and rotating speed was 100 rpm. Tensile strength, microstructure and phase transformation of ball milled Ti-(50-x)Ni-xCu powders were studied. After 100 hours milling, Ti, Ni and Cu elements were alloyed completely and an amorphous phase was formed. Amorphous phase was crystallized to martensite(B 19') and austenite(B2) after heat treatment for 1 hour at $850^{\circ}C$. As the Cu contents were increased, tensile strength of extruded 6061Al/TiNiCu was decreased, and B19'martensite phases In the TiNi particles were the causes of high tensile stress of extruded 6061Al/TiNiCu.NiCu.
