  • Purpose: The study was conducted to investigate the effects of knowledge and attitude towards dementia on social distance from senile dementia among university students. Methods: The study was a descriptive study based on 235 university students. Data were collected from September 1 to 15, 2017 using a structured self-report questionnaire. Dementia knowledge, dementia attitude, and social distance from senile dementia were measured. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U-test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Pearson's correlation coefficients and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: After adjusting for the general and dementia-related characteristics of the participants, the significant predictors of social distance from senile dementia among university students were dementia attitude. Moreover, knowledge and attitude towards dementia explained 27.8% of the variance in social distance from senile dementia among university students. Conclusion: The results indicate that educators need to make efforts to improve dementia attitude and to develop plans to increase dementia knowledge in order to reduce university students' prejudice against senile dementia.

The study participants were 288 nursing students from K' university on May 7 to 14, 2019.The data were analyzed by t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression using SPSS 20,0 program. The results revealed that students acquired knowledge of dementia by grade and religion as per general characteristics. The knowledge, attitude towards dementia and awareness of elderly care showed statistically significant differences in experience of care and education about dementia. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between the awareness of elderly care with knowledge (r = .105, p = 038) and attitude towards dementia (r = .556, p = 000). The students' attitude was explained about 31.3% in awareness of elderly care. As a findings, there is need to develop and apply a structured education program on dementia based on individual and group characteristics of nursing students. Also, it is recommended to provide continuous education and feedback.

Next, in terms of factors that determine the attitude toward the dementia, first, a careful examination of variables that influence the attitude towards the dementia found that the knowledge of dementia in Korea is (β=.305 p<0.001) and the attitude towards the elderly in Japan is (β=.348 p<0.001). Second, attitude toward the elderly and knowledge of the dementia was found to be a variable that influences attitude toward the dementia, both in Korea and Japan.

The questions with low rate of correct answer were "Dementia is caused by several dozens of diseases such as internal medicine, neurology, psychiatry, etc.", "In spite of the dementia, patients can enjoy their favorite things." The subjects' average score of attitudes towards dementia was $3.72{\pm}0.58$. Questions of negative attitudes were "I don't want to be closed to patients of dementia.", "I watch information or prevention about dementia in mass communications media." The relationship between dementia-related knowledge and attitudes showed positive correlation. Conclusion: The result means the mediation is necessary for improving dementia-related knowledge and strengthening positive attitudes in adolescents. The education programs should be proceeded to provide adolescents with correct information about dementia.

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationships between knowledge of dementia care, attitude toward dementia and person-centered care among nurses in geriatric hospitals. Methods: Participants were 115 nurses from the seven geriatric hospitals. Data were collected from September $5^{th}$ through $21^{st}$ in 2018 and analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: Person-centered care was significantly different according to satisfaction with income, career of geriatric hospital, application of their opinions, and the satisfaction with hospital managers, administrators and nurse managers. Also person-centered care showed a significant positive correlation with the attitude toward dementia. Predictors of person-centered care were the satisfaction with hospital managers and the attitude toward dementia, which explained 23.0% of the variance. Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that the attitude toward dementia and the satisfaction with the hospital organization were related to the person-centered care in geriatric hospitals. Therefore, the strategies to improve the attitude towards dementia should be carried out to enhance the person-centered care among nurses in geriatric hospital.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify factors that have impact on taking care of dementia elderly people by careworkers. 212 careworkers participated in the survey. The data was analyzed by SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. The mean score of knowledge of dementia was 16.19, and attitude was 34.42, and the level of care performance for elders with dementia was 102.18. It was shown that the more positive attitude the careworkers had, the higher level of care performance occurred(r=.41, p<.001). As a result of analyzing the main factors affecting the level of care performance for dementia elderly people, attitude toward dementia(${\beta}$=.41, p<.001) and the level of education(${\beta}$=.27, p<.001) appeared to be significant explanatory variables, and this model's explanatory power was 27%. To settle a long-term care insurance successfully, the qualifications for careworkers are needed to be reinforced, and the ways to improve a positive attitude towards dementia elderly are also required to be come up with.

  • This study was executed to develop an education program, which improves knowledge for dementia prevention of the middle aged and enhances positive attitudes, and provide basic data that can apply to communities by inquiring into the middle aged's dementia knowledge, attitudes and needs for dementia prevention education. The study data were collected from 218 people aged 40 to 64 in N city from October 15th to November 30th 2018. For data analysis, frequencies and percentages, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé test and Pearson's correlation coefficients were applied. The study result displayed that the score of the middle aged's dementia knowledge was above average(9.13±2.20). The question 'Dementia is a disease.' earned the highest percentage of correct answers(88.1%), whereas the question 'Dementia is caused by medical, neurologic or psychiatric disorders.' earned the lowest percentage of correct answers(30.3%). The scores of attitudes towards dementia(34.33±5.69) and needs for dementia prevention education(23.58±3.46) were above average. In addition, there was a statistically significant positive correlation between attitudes towards dementia and needs for dementia prevention education(r=.275, p<.000). In conclusion, it was revealed that positive attitudes towards dementia had a close relation with needs for dementia prevention education. These findings implies that there will be a need to develop a systematic education program about dementia for the middle aged and seek proper political improvements of dementia through cooperation between communities and the country.

  • This study was undertaken to recommend a dementia education program for college students, and to understand the outcome on knowledge and attitude towards dementia, awareness of aged support, and cognitive-affective empathy. Totally, 40 college students in C city, K do, were enrolled for the study, and divided into two groups of 20 each: experimental group and control group. The experimental group subjects were provided a 12-hour dementia education program; effectiveness of this program has been verified in later studies. Data were collected from November 5, 2018 to December 7, 2018; collection was before, after, and 4 weeks after the program was provided to the experimental group. Control group data were also collected in the same time frame. Data analysis was done using IBM SPSS WIN/21.0, and the percentage, mean and standard deviation were analyzed using Shapiro-Wilks test, $x^2$-test, Fisher's exact probability test, Independent t-test, Friedman test, Mann-Whitney U and Repeated Measure ANOVA. Knowledge of dementia (F=19.80, p<0.001), attitude toward dementia (z=-4.10, p<0.001), and awareness of aged support (F=6.26, p=0.017) had a significant interaction between group and time; however, cognitive-affective empathy showed no correlation (F=1.32, p<0.256). We therefore suggest strengthening the contents of future education program for dementia, developing a customized program for cognitive-affective empathy by considering subject characteristics, and further research verifying the effectiveness of the program.
