  • This study aims to explore the men's perceived meanings attached to the father role and to investigate the relationship between the father role meanings and men's psychological well-being. Using two waves of data from the National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH) across 5 years, this study estimated the influences of the father role meanings at T1 on psychological well-being of fathers at T2 with hierarchical Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression models. Findings showed that the majority of fathers felt the father roles interesting, appreciated, sociable, and well-done. However, stepfathers reported significantly more negative meanings of the father role than fathers having biological children. Positive role meanings attached to the father role in terms of interesting and well-done were Significantly associated with men's psychological well-being. Although this study has some limitations by using the secondary survey data (NSFH), this study has an advantage in exploring the association between fatherhood experiences and men's psychological well-being from men's own perspectives. Also, this study has strength in a sense that long-term effects of the father role meanings were investigated and empirically provide findings in consistent with role identity.

  • Enhancement in the seismic buckling capacity of steel tanks caused by the addition of fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) retrofit layers attached to the outer walls of the steel tank is investigated. Three-dimensional non-linear finite element modeling is utilized to perform such analysis considering non linear material properties and non-linear large deformation large strain analysis. FRP composites which possess high stiffness and high failure strength are used to reduce the steel hoop stress and consequently improve the tank capacity. A number of tanks with varying dimensions and shell thicknesses are examined using FRP composites added in symmetric layers attached to the outer surface of the steel shell. The FRP shows its effectiveness in carrying part of the hoop stresses along with the steel before steel yielding. Following steel yielding, the FRP restrains the outward bulging of the tank and continues to resist higher hoop stresses. The percentage improvement in the ultimate base moment capacity of the tank due to the addition of more FRP layers is shown to be as high as 60% for some tanks. The percentage of increase in the tank moment capacity is shown to be dependent on the ratio of the shell thickness to the tank radius (t/R). Finally a new methodology has been explained to calculate the location of Elephant foot buckling and consequently the best location of FRP application.

  • In this study, the experimental bending behaviors of an H-secti on-steel-beam-attached high-strength steel plate or steel beam were analyzed. Its structural performance was verified by comparing the results of the experiment and the analysis that were conducted. In fabricating an unprestressed composite beam using two members that have different strengths, the generated slip on the joint in proport problem because of the redistribution of force caused by the lose state of the joint. Therefore, when fabricating composite beams, it is important to load them with prestressed forces. Based on the results of the experiment that was conducted, the prestressed composite-steel-beam-attached steel plate or beam has a higher bending resistance and load-carrying capacit

  • In the present work a new friction device, with a set of single or double rotational friction flanges and a link element, is described and tested. The mechanism may be applied for the strengthening of existing r/c or steel buildings as well as in new constructed buildings. The device has selectable variable behavior in different levels of displacement and an interlock mechanism that is provided by the link element. The link element may be designed to lock at preselected level of displacement, offering in this way an extra safety reserve against strong earthquakes. A summary of the existing literature about other similar mechanisms is initially presented in this paper. The proposed mechanism is presented and described in details. Laboratory experiments are presented in detail and the resulted response that proves the efficiency of the mechanism at selectable levels of strength capacity is discussed. Drawings of the mechanism attached to a r/c frame with connection details are also included. Finally a dynamic analysis of two r/c frames, with and without the proposed mechanism attached, is performed and the resulted response is given. The main conclusion is that the proposed mechanism is a cheap and efficient devise for the improvement of the performance of new or existing framed buildings to seismic loads.

  • In this study, a series of pullout experiments were conducted on geogrid with attached passive reinforcement with respect to silt containments. Experiments were performed on man-made sand ground containing different silt of 0 %, 17 %, 35 % under various normal stresses 30 kPa, 60 kPa, 120 kPa respectively. The pullout test results showed that passive reinforcement increased the pullout strength over all silt contained condition and showed up to 20 % increases for same soil condition. The test results converted to the coefficient of interaction of pullout test to investigate the effect of reinforcement and the case of passive reinforcement showed 0.7~1.6 distribution depend on a silt contents. Therefore it is concluded that the overall length of geogrid can be reduced under the low vertical stress conditions.

  • In this study, in order to prevent the frost damage of the concrete, the characteristics of the form using heating sheet utilizing the chemical reaction of quicklime and the insulation were evaluated through experiments at low temperature. In the case of form at $-10^{\circ}C$, the form with attached heating sheet showed a temperature history of more than $10^{\circ}C$ higher than that of wood form at the early of concreting due to heat of the quicklime in the heating sheet. In the case of the insulated form, the concrete was kept at a high temperature by preserving the hydration heat. When the heating sheet and the isopink(extruded polystyrene) were attached together on the form, the effect was the same as that of the vacuum insulation. The compressive strength of the form with vacuum insulation and form with isopink, heating sheet as measured about 5 MPa at age 3. The experimental in Mongolia, as with the pervious results, the form with the heating sheet and the insulation showed the highest temperature history over $25^{\circ}C$ for 48 hours. Therefore, it was confirmed that the heating sheet and insulation are attached to the form, which helps the concrete strength development at low temperature by heat generation and the insulation effect.

  • A finite element analysis study was performed to investigate the behavior and strength of a Plate-Circular Hollow Section joint stiffened with Rib-plate, Since The strength of plate-Circular Section joint is reduced by joint of stress and local plastic deformation which is caused by wall moment, rib plates are attached to the upper and lower Plate-Circular Hollow Section joint for redistribution of stress. The behaviors of joints stiffened with Rib-plate according to shape of rib and reinforcing method, etc are different from those of joints which is not stiffened. However, the criterion of hollow structural section was limited on some parts. Therefore, this study intends to investigate the behavior and structural capacity of Plate-Circular Hollow Section joints stiffened with Rib-plate and compare the Finite element analysis with the Design Equation. Finally, this study proposes the reasonable ultimate strength formula through the comparisons with other design guide.

  • The power strength of electric wave of reader looked radiation forms from the gate type RFID system. The more distant from antennas, the weaker of power strength of electric wave. The power strength of electric wave with 3 antennas showed stronger than its with 2 antennas. With 2 antennas, the coefficient of correlation between the power strength of electric wave and response ability of tag was 0.665 (p=0.009), and it showed results at significance level. With 3 antennas, the coefficient of correlation was 0.711 (p=0.004), correlationship between the power strength of electric wave and the response ability of tag showed at significance high level. From the analysis result about tag reading performance on the gate type RFID system, the reading rate was good when tags were attached on a acrylic plate which were located in front of 3 or 4 antennas. As tags were getting away from antennas, the reading rate was decreased. The nearer from antennas, the higher the reading rate at the center. When tags were turned at right angles with antennas, the longer distant from antennas, the lower reading rates at the center, right and left locations. When the number of antennas and distance are constant, respectively, the significant difference of the tag reading rates according to the locations of left, right and center were not found.

  • PURPOSE: This study was conducted to examine the effects of motion taping on the effects of lumbar stabilization exercise. METHODS: The subjects of this study were 24 normal males with no problem in their nervous systems or musculoskeletal systems. The subjects were randomly assigned to a control group of 12 subjects and an experimental group of 12 subjects. The control group was applied with lumbar stabilization exercise while the experimental group was applied with lumbar stabilization exercise after being attached with tapes. The intervention period was four weeks in total and the subject underwent the exercises three times per week. The exercise time per session was set to one hour in principle consisting of warm-up exercise and cool-down exercise for 10 minutes each and main exercise for 40 minutes. Lumbar muscle strength was measured as a factor to examine the effects of lumbar stabilization exercises. RESULTS: The control group showed an increase in lumbar muscle strength from $111{\pm}6.30kg$ to $113{\pm}6.23kg$ and the experimental group showed an increase in lumbar muscle strength from $108{\pm}6.46kg$ to $116{\pm}5.21kg$. The increases shown by both groups were statistically significant and the experimental group that was applied with motion taping showed a larger increase in lumbar muscle strength compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: Lumbar stabilization exercise is considered to be good for lumbar stability and muscle strengthening and lumbar stabilization exercise applied with motion taping is considered to show larger effects for muscle strengthening and the improvement of lumbar functions.
