The present study was conducted to investigate the Bordetella bronchiseptica infection in Youngnam swine herds during the period from August 1986 to July 1987 and some properties of the organisms isolated from these Korean swine. B. bronchiseptica was recovered from 25 of 70 (35.7%) glowing pigs of 4 to 10 weeks of age and from 12 of 13 (92.3%) herds. From 115 slaughter pigs, 58(50.4%) pigs were culture positive and the pigs from 13 of 14 (92.9%) herds were found to be infected with B. bronchiseptica. The majority of biochemical and cultural properties of B. bronchiseptica isolated from Korean swine were identical to those of the standard strain employed and some 97.6% of the isolates showed the characters of phase I organism on primary isolation.

Neuropathic shoulder arthropathy or Charcot's shoulder is an extremely rare disease, and sometimes it is associated with cervical syringomyelia. Clinical symptoms of the disease include edema of the shoulder and restriction in range of motion. Radiological diagnosis can be made through plain radiography through a characteristic, atrophic destruction of the joint. We experienced a Charcot's joint of the shoulder wherein destruction of the joint progressed extremely quickly and reviewed the literature concerning this condition.

An 8-year-old, castrated male, Schnauzer dog was presented for evaluation of gradually worsening erythematous papules. Physical examination revealed multiple erythematous papules having a firm, gritty texture located in bilateral ears, dorsal midline, perianal and inguinal area. Skin biopsy revealed aberrant structure, characterized by atrophic epidermal-dermal layer structure with granular materials which was presumed as calcinosis cutis secondary to iatrognic hyperadrenocotricism. By initiating minocycline for 14 days, there was reduction in size, number of calcium deposit with remarkably decreased erythema. This case report presents the clinical trial of minocycline as a potential agent in treating dogs with calcinosis cutis.

Sternal malformation/vascular dysplasia association is a rare congenital dysmorphology, which has not yet been reported in Korea. Its typical clinical features include a sternal cleft covered with atrophic skin, a median abdominal raphe extending from the sternal defect to the umbilicus, and cutaneous craniofacial hemangiomata. We report a case of a full-term newborn who presented with no anomalies at birth, except for a skin defect over the sternum and a supraumbilical raphe. Multiple hemangiomas appeared subsequently on her chin and upper chest wall, and respiratory distress due to subglottic hemangioma developed during the first 2 months of life. Her symptoms were controlled with oral prednisolone administration. No respiratory distress have recurred during the 3-year follow-up period.

The purpose of this experiment was to study the histologic changes of submabdibular glands of which ducts were cut and ligated. In A-Group of 4 dogs, the right submandibular ducts were intact as control, and ducts were ligated and the left submandibular ducts were cut. The submandibular glands were studied histologically after 2, 5, 8, and 12 weeks. The results were as follows : 1. The submandibular glands of which ducts were found as normal as control submand ibular glands. 2. The submandibular glands of which ducts were ligated were atrophied. 3. The cut submandibular ducts did not cause histologically atrophic changes on submandibular glands until 12 weeks.

A 9-month-old, female, mixed-breed dog was presented with dyspnea, exercise intolerance and a left apical heart murmur. Echocardiography revealed mitral systolic regurgitant flow by morphological abnormalities of the mitral apparatus including dilated annulus, excessively asymmetric mitral leaflets, short and stout chordae tendinae, and atrophic papillary muscles. The dog was diagnosed with congenital mitral dysplasia based on the echocardiographic features. Two months later, the dog died and the echocardiographic findings were confirmed by necropsy. This case report describes the echocardiographic features of mitral dysplasia with papillary muscle atrophy, and compares the gross necropsy findings in a dog.

This paper dealt with the macroscopical and histopathological observations on the polycystic kidney occurred in a Korean native calf aged about a year. The results summarized are as follows: 1. In macroscopical findings, numerous cysts in the bilateral kidneys were seen under the renal capsule, and the cysts were various in size and clear or cloudy in their contents. The cysts in the inner area of the renal cortex were smaller than those of the outer area of the renal cortex in size and in number. 2. In microscopical findings, marked dilatations of Bowman's spaces and convoluted tubules were prominant feature. Numerous cysts with or without eosinophilic materials were contained atrophic glomerulus. prolferation of fibrous connective tissue, atrophy of convoluted tubules were also observed. Inner walls of the cysts were surrounded by cuboidal cells, sguamous cells or fibrous connective tissue. 3. This case was regarded as congenital polycystic kidney belonged to type III of Osathanondh and Potter.

Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the effects of NMES for recovery of skeletal muscle. Methods: The normal group consisted of healthy rat without cast immobilization. The control group was breeding at standard cage during 7 days after 2 weeks-cast immobilization on hind limb. The experimental group. I. received NMES application during days after 2 weeks-cast immobilization on hind limb. The effects were measured with NT-3 immunoreactivity in neuromuscular junction by light microscope. Results: Immunoreactivity of NT-3 at the neuromuscular junction was higher appeared experimental groups than control group. Then, There was a little detection in the normal and control group. Conclusion: These therapeutic interventions enhance expression of NT-3 at the neuromuscular junction. Also, NMES is considered to effect on a normal structural formation and NT-3 expression at the neuromuscular junction.

Two patients with sufficient vertical bone height but insufficient bone width in the anterior mandibular edentulous area, less than 6mm in the buccolingual aspect, for implant placement were chosen for treatment with a ridge splitting procedure. The surgical technique involving greenstick fracture is described. This ridge splitting procedure could be simple placement of implants into ideal restorable positions in severely atrophic, knife-edged ridges and predictable for narrow edentulous alveolar ridge augmentation associated with implant placement. We experienced two cases to place implant with insufficient bone width in the anterior mandibular edentulous area for overdenture be ridge splitting technique. Thus, we will report two cases and review of the literature.

This experiment was executed to control effectively endemic disease of swine farms in Incheon metropolitan city. Mainly using PigMon program which had been developed by the College of Veterinary Medicine in the University of Minnesota(USA), we examined lesions of gastric ulcer and interstitial nephritis additionally. 446 heads of pigs shipped from 5 farms in Incheon to a slaughterhouse from June in 2003 to May in 2004 were examined. Infection rates by farms were obtained as follows; 1. Pneumonia was varied from 34.6% to 74.1% and pneumonic score was 1.47∼7.06. As for atrophic rhinitis, four farms were 100% and one farm was 89.5% and rhinitis score was 1.3∼3.2. 2. The infection rate of pericarditis and peritonitis was 1.0∼3.9% and liver white spots, papular dermatitis were observed in pigs of 9.8∼29.7%, 16.7∼51.4% respectively. 3. The outbreak rates of interstitial nephritis, lesions of ileal thickening and gastric ulcer were 15.4∼24.1%, 7.7∼13.5%, and 62.7%∼86.2% respectively.
