  • The objective of this investigation was to obtain an excellent spray at the low injection pressure. When cavitation occurred in the nozzle hole the atomization of the liquid jet enhanced considerably. In this experiments, a acrylic nozzle which was installed the gap and installed the bypass in the nozzle hole was used to enhance the atomization of the liquid jet at the few injection pressure. The liquid flow in the nozzle hole was photographed by a transmitted light using a micro flash. The spray angle was measured by macroscope images of PMAS and the Sauter mean diameter was measured by PDA system. The pressure of the notate hole was measured by pressure transducer. It was found that enhanced atomization of the liquid jet at the low injection pressure was obtained by installing the gap and the bypass at the single hole nozzle.

  • An experimental study was performed to explore the atomization characteristics as the drop formation and the liquid breakup of an ethanol fuel using an electrohydrodynamic atomizer. A developed electrohydrodynamic atomizer controlled by a high AC power, a variable frequency, and a liquid feeding was used for the experiments. The test had been considered a disperse atomization processing at $450{\sim}4200V$ applied power, $200{\sim}400\;Hz$ frequency, and $1{\sim}3\;ml/min$ ethanol feeding to achieve an uniformed droplet formation. The goal of the research was to investigate the possibility of the liquid breakup for an ethanol fuel in an electrohydrodynamic atomizer. The results showed that the mean droplet radius decreased as the applied voltage increased or as the applied AC frequency increased. The whipping motion had been grown at the specified voltages due to the applied frequency.

  • This paper presents the experimental results to verify the atomization characteristics and environmental impact of cutting fluid. Even though cutting fluid improves the productivity through the cooling, Lubricating effects, environmental impact due to cutting fluid usage is also increased on factory shop floor Cutting fluid's aerosol via atomization process can be affected human health risk such as lung cancer and skin diseases. Experimental results show that the generated fine aerosol which particle size less than 10 micron appears near working tone under typical operational conditions. The aerosol concentration also exceeds NIOSH regulations. This research can be provided a basis of environmental impact analysis fur environmental consciousness.

  • Poor fuel vaporization in gasoline engines causes the problem of HC emission during the cold start and warm-up period. This paper presents a strategy to improve fuel atomization during the warm-up phase. In this experiment, the heated fuel-rail system is constructed to investigate the effects of fuel heating on the average size of fuel droplets. The fuel atomization effects are examined by measuring Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) of the fuel droplets from the three different types (two-hole, pintle, and six-hole) of injectors based upon a returnless heated fuel-rail system. The results show that the six-hole type injector is the most sensitive to fuel heating in terms of SMD among three different types of injectors.

  • The objective of this experimental study is to verify atomization characteristics of emulsified fuel. The emulsified fuel made of adding the ultrasonic energy is analyzed with atomization characteristics and chemicophysics. As water contents within emulsified fuel and needle angle increase, SMD, viscosity and surface tension were analyzed. By measuring the distribution percentage of hydrogen volume by $^1H$-NMR spectrum, the proportion of aromatics and paraffins is analyzed and compared each other. The results of study is as follows. First, as water contents within emulsified fuel and needle angle of nozzle increases, SMD increases. Second, for the distribution percentage of hydrogen volume, the distribution percentage of aromatics is about 10% and the rest portion is paraffins.

  • An experimental research on supersonic combustion of kerosene in a model scramjet combustor has been conducted. Kerosene was injected normally into a Mach 2 vitiated airstream either at an atomized liquid state or at a gaseous state. The atomization of kerosene was achieved by the “effervescent atomization” method, and the gaseous kerosene was supplied by passing kerosene inside a heated pipe. The results are discussed and are also compared to those in our previous experiment, in which no atomization nor vaporization methods has been conducted to the kerosene.

  • The spherical and high quality Titanium fine powder "Tilop" has been produced with gas atomization furnace, Sumitomo Titanium Corporation originally designed. Recently, a new process which can produce Ti-alloy(Ti-6Al-4V) powders by utilizing our gas atomization process, of which raw material is sponge titanium pre-mixed with alloy chips or granules has been also developed. The particle size of gas atomized Ti-alloy powder and the mechanical properties of sintered Ti-alloy compacts prepared by metal injection molding were discussed in this study.

  • In this paper, the fuel atomization effect of a spark-ignition engine on the lean burn characteristics is studied. The fuel atomization is enhanced by heating the inside of the intake manifold with electric heater. Several operating parameters including cyclic variation are expressed against the air-fuel ratio from the experimental results. The fuel atomization gives much influence on the combustion stability. As the intake manifold is heated, the combustion duration decreased and the value of COV in the lean region as well as in the theoretical equivalence ratio became smaller than of not-heated.

  • Two-dimensional laser visualization methods have been used in the study of breakup and atomization processes of non-evaporating diesel sprays. A single-hole spray injected into a quiescent atmospheric environment was visualized by the LIF(Laser Induced Fluorescence) and scattering technique. The LIF technique could be implemented to take the images which are magnified enough to show the shape of liquid ligaments and small droplets. The spontaneous scattering and fluorescent images of sprays were also taken to investigate the atomization of droplets. In the tip and periphery of a spray. the scattering light is bright and the ratio of fluorescent/scattering intensity is lower. This characteristics indicate the very high number density of small droplets which are well atomized.

  • Gas injection is a technique applied to improve throttling in liquid rocket engines and atomization in effervescent injectors. When a gas is injected into a liquid, it creates a two-phase flow inside the injector. The changes (bubbly flow, slug flow, annular flow, etc.) in the two-phase flow affect the injector's spray characteristics. In this study, cold-flow tests were performed by using three injectors with different orifice diameters and four aerators with different gas injection hole diameters. The experiments were done by changing the thrust ratio (liquid mass flow rate ratio) and gas-liquid mass flow rate ratio. Two-phase flow transition, breakup length, and discharge coefficient according to the injector/aerator design and flow conditions were investigated in detail.
