  • To investigate spray and combustion of emulsified fuel of W/O type, we mixed water with light oil by using ultrasonic energy adding system. We measured the SMD of sprayed droplet to find atomization characteristics of emulsified fuel with using the Malvern 2600D system. Major parameters are the weight ratio of water($0{\sim}30%$ by 10%) in emulsified fuel injection pressure(lobar), and the measurement distance($10{\sim}100mm$ by 10mm). Combustion visualizing system is made up commonly used boiler system and digital camera 1/500s to investigate combustion phenomena. As a result, the more water contents increased, the more SMD increased. The water particle of emulsified fuel made short flame in continuos spray combustion phenomena because of micro explosion.

  • Correlations of drop size and velocity in a spray from the disintegration of liquid jet and liquid film from an internal mixing twin-fluid atomizer, were determined by phase Doppler method. The distribution pattern of Sauter mean diameter(SMD) in a spray was changed by a behavior of liquid flow. As smaller droplets became faster and slower easily by the surrounding conditions, the correlation between drop size and mean velocity was found to be varied as next 3 steps; firstly smaller droplets have a higher mean velocity at the area near atomizer, droplets have almost the same mean velocity and finally larger droplets have a higher mean velocity at the area far from an atomizer.

  • The Objective of this study is to investigate the effect of internal swiller angle and swirl chamber aspect ratio of nozzle on spray characteristics for application of spray system in micro fabrication process. The macro-spray characterictics such as the spray angle and breakup process were obtained by photographs illustrating atomization. The micro-spray characteristics such as droplet size and axial velocity were measured by using PDA with swirler angle and swirl chamber aspect ratio. The swiller angles were $13.5^{\circ},\;27^{\circ},\;and\;40.5^{\circ}$. The swirl chamber aspect ratios were 1.2, 1.6, and 2.0. It was found that the smaller swirl chamber aspect ratio was, the larger axial velocity and drop size were.

  • In the common rail fuel injection system, which is the core of diesel high efficiency and NOX reduction, injection strategies such as high pressure injection of fuel, accurate injection rate control, and multistage injection are important to increase fuel atomization. In this study, the bypass type piezo injector for the electronic control based common rail injection system applied to diesel fuel vehicle was studied. In particular, the injection rate and internal fuel flow characteristics of the high-pressure injector according to the piezo stacking number and applied voltage were analyzed by theoretical numerical method. When the applied voltage changes, it is determined that additional fuel flow through the bypass compensates for the reduced valve driving force due to the change in the driving voltage.

  • Mechanical properties of metal injection molded titanium and titanium alloy parts were investigated in this study. Material powders with low oxygen content and spherical shape were obtained by electrode induction-melting gas atomization which could melt and atomize titanium and titanium alloy bars with no touch on crucible or tundish. Tensile specimens were fabricated from obtained powders by metal injection molding process. Tensile strength of the specimens increases with increasing oxygen content. This result corresponds to a tendency of wrought metal.

  • Al-8Fe-2Mo-2V-1Zr alloys were prepared by the gas atomization/hot extrusion and the melt spinning/hot extrusion. For the gas atomized and extruded alloy, equiaxed grains with the average size of 400 nm and finely distributed dispersoids with their particle sizes ranging from 50nm to 200nm were observed. For the melt spun and hot extrusion processed alloy, refined microstructural feature consisting of equiaxed grains with the average size of 200nm and fine dispersoids with their particle sizes under 50nm appeared to exhibit a difference in microstructure. Strength of the latter alloy was higher than that for the former alloy up to elevated temperatures.

  • Eventhough Fe-6.5 wt.% Si alloy shows excellent magnetic properties, magnetic components made of the alloy are not totally because of its extremely low ductility. In order to overcome this demerit of alloy, 6.7 wt.% Si alloy powders were produced by gas atomization and then post-processed to form magnetic cores. By doing so, the total core loss could be minimized by reducing both hysteresis and eddy current loss. From our experiments, we were able to achive a core loss of $390mW/cm^3$ at 0.1 T and 50 kHz through proper processes and a permeability $\mu_{eff}$ of 68 at low frequency.

  • Cu-Fe alloys (CFAs) are much anticipated for use in electrical contacts, magnetic recorders, and sensors. The low cost of Fe has inspired the investigation of these alloys as possible replacements for high-cost Cu-Nb and Cu-Ag alloys. Here, alloys of Cu and Fe having compositions of $Cu_{100-x}Fe_x$ (x = 10, 30, and 50 wt.%) are prepared by gas atomization and characterized microstructurally and structurally based on composition and powder size with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Grain sizes and Fe-rich particle sizes are measured and relationships among composition, powder size, and grain size are established. Same-sized powders of different compositions yield different microstructures, as do differently sized powders of equal composition. No atomic-level alloying is observed in the CFAs under the experimental conditions.

  • This experiment was undertaken to investigate the spray characteristics of the conventional injection system and the ultrasonic energy added injection system. Test fuels include light oil and mixed light-BC oil. The mixed light-BC oil was injected at the normal temperature$(20^{\circ}C)$ and the high temperature$(95{\pm}2^{\circ}C)$ and injection pressure was $120kg/cm^2$. Sauter mean diameter was measured under the variation of the spray distance. To measure the droplet size, we used the Malvern system 2600C. Droplet size distribution was analyzed from the result data of Malvern system. It is also found that the condition of the ultrasonic energy added injection and high temperature injection generates the smaller droplets than that of the conventional injection.

  • This paper presents spray characteristics of piezo-driven type common-rail injector and comparisons to those of solenoid-driven type. Experiments were conducted to measure spray penetraion and SMD distributions using a spray visualization system and PDPA (phase Doppler particle analyzer) system. Injection conditions including injection pressure and energizing durations were varied in order to analyzing effects of injection conditions on spray characteristics. Furthermore, ambient pressures were increased for keeping ambient gas density close to in-cylinder pressure of diesel engine. Results showed that injection delay of piezo-driven type injector was much shorter than those of solenoid driven type and exhibited enhanced atomization performances.
