Single and few-layer graphene nanosheets (GNs) have successfully synthesized by a modified Hummer's method followed by chemical reduction of exfoliated graphene oxide (GO) in the presence of hydrazine monohydrate. GO and GNs were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractions (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Atomic force microscopy (AFM), Optical microscopy (OM) and by electrical conductivity measurements. The result showed that electrical conductivity of GNs was significantly improved, from $4.2{\times}10^{-4}$ S/m for GO to 12 S/m for GNs, possibly due to the removal of oxygen-containing functional group during chemical reduction. In addition, the $NO_2$ gas sensing characteristics of GNs are also discussed.

Monodispersed spherical silica-coated ceria nanoparticles were prepared through a sol-gel process using tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and ceria fine particles. In this process, ceria fine particles were also prepared from cerium nitrate. The mean size of ceria particles was 300nm. Silica nanoparticles with narrow particle size distribution were prepared by controlled hydrolysis of TEOS solution. The silica sols were obtained by peptization, the process of redispersing a coagulated colloid, and were coated on ceria particles by the control of the weight ratio of silica/ceria and the pH of the mixture in aqueous solution. The morphologies of particles were characterized with scaning electron microscopy(SEM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and atomic force microscopy(AFM). The coating thickness of silica particles obtained by using this method was controlled in the range of 30 - 70nm.

An inverse finite element (FE) model parameter estimation algorithm can be used to characterize mechanical properties of biological tissues. Using this algorithm, we can consider the influence of material nonlinearity, contact mechanics, complex boundary conditions, and geometrical constraints in the modeling. In this study, biomechanical experiments on macro and micro samples are conducted and characterized with the developed algorithm. Macro scale experiments were performed to measure the force response of porcine livers against mechanical loadings using one-dimensional indentation device. The force response of the human liver cancer cells was also measured by the atomic force microscope (AFM). The mechanical behavior of porcine livers (macro) and human liver cancer cells (micro) were characterized with the algorithm via hyperelastic and linear viscoelastic models. The developed models are suitable for computing accurate reaction force on tools and deformation of biomechanical tissues.

There is a unique type of fatty acid in the hair surface. 18-methyleicosanoic acid (18-MEA) is an unusual anteiso fatty acid covalently linked to the outermost surface of hair cuticle. A layer of 18-MEA is located in the upper ${\beta}$-layer of the CMC that is responsible for the low surface energy and low friction resistance of the hair's outer surface. The high mobility of 18-MEA molecule facilitates spreading of extraneous lipid by decreasing interfacial shear strength. In this study, we introduced N-hydroxyl succinimidyl ester functional group to the one end of C10 - 40 isoalkyl acid for regenerating hair surface with covalently bound fatty acid layer. The re-hydrophobicization of hair surface has been investigated by contact angle measurement. The inner moisture content of hair at different levels of humidity (40, 55, 70 %RH) was measured by electric moisture analyzer. Treatment with Hydroxysuccinimidyl C10 - 40 Isoalkyl Acidate (HCIA) was supposed to make hair surface smoother by filling the cracks between cuticles with covalently bound fatty acid monomolecular layer like cuticle glue. This glue effect was also confirmed with line profile of AFM images. Therefore, the moisture and structural components of inner hair were not easily flown out and the optimum moisture content could be kept constantly though the outside humidity level was changed. The lateral force microscopy (LFM) by using atomic force microscope showed that the friction force of hair surface treated with HCIA was decreased. It also showed the constantly sustained friction value even after shampooing repeated 15 times.
We have investigated and analyzed the effects of the evaporation rate of MgO films on the MgO properties and the discharge characteristics of a plasma display panel(PDP). The MgO properties such as the crystal orientation, the surface roughness, the film structure, and cathode-luminescence (CL) spectra were inspected using XRD (X-ray diffraction), AFM(atomic force microscopy). And the discharging characteristics of the PDP such as the firing voltage, discharging current, and luminescence were measured using a vacuum chamber with oscilloscope (TDS 540C), current probe (TCP-312A), color meter (CS-100A) and etc. From the experiments results we confirmed the optimum evaporation rate at $5{\AA}/sec$, the MgO properties were shown to be strongly dependent on the evaporation rate, and the MgO properties had an effecton the optical and electrical characteristics. In other words, if the evaporation rates increase than $5{\AA}/sec$, the intensity of (200) orientation and cathode-luminescence (CL) spectra reduce, and the firing vlotage was increased. So the luminuous efficiency grows worse.
Cu seed layers deposited by magnetron sputtering onto tantalum nitride barrier films were treated with ECR plasma and then the copper films were electroplated and rapid thermal annealed in an argon or nitrogen atmosphere at various temperatures ranging from 200 to $500^{\circ}C$. Changes in the microstructure and physical properties of the copper films electroplated on the hydrogen ECR plasma cleaned copper seed layers were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses. It was found that the copper film undergoes complete recrystallization during annealing at a temperature higher than $400^{\circ}C$. The resistivity of the Cu film tends to decrease and the degree of (111) preferred orientation tends to increase as the annealing temperature increases. Theoptimum annealing condition for obtaining the film with the lowest resistivity, the smoothest surface and the highest degree of the (111) preferred orientation is rapid thermal annealing in a nitrogen atmosphere at $400^{\circ}C$ for 120 s. The resistivity and the surface roughness of the electroplated copper film annealed under this condition are 1.98 $\mu$O-cm and 17.77 nm, respectively.
$\alpha$-Sexithiophene ($\alpha$-6T) thin films were deposited by organic molecular beam deposition (OMBD) technique. The $\alpha$-6T was synthesized and purified by the sublimation method. The thin films of the $\alpha$-6T were deposited under various deposition conditions. The effects of deposition rate, substrate temperature, and vacuum pressure on the formation of these films have been studied. The molecular orientation, crystallinity, and surface morphology of $\alpha$-6T films were investigated with angle-resolved UV/visible absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was found that the crystalline structure of $\alpha$-6T films was monoclinic and independent uppon substrate temperature, deposition rate, and deposition pressure. On the other hand, the $\alpha$-6T molecules in the film deposited at a low deposition rate, higher substrate temperature, and under a high vacuum tended to be aligned perpendicular to the substrate.

Self-assembled multilayer thin films of poly(ethylene-alt-maleic anhydride) (PEMAh) and poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (P4VP) were fabricated by layer-by-layer (LbL) sequential adsorption. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopic analysis of the self-assembled PEMAh/P4VP multilayer films confirms that the driving forces for the multilayer buildup are the intermolecular hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. The linear increase of absorption peak of P4VP at 256 nm with increasing number of PEMAh/P4VP bilayers indicates that the multilayer buildup is an uniform assembling process. We also investigate the effects of polyelectrolyte concenhation variation of the dipping solution and pH variation of the PEMAh solution on the multilayer film formation. Thickness. adsorbed polyelectrolyte mass and surface roughness of the multilayer films were measured by UV-visible spectroscopy, quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively.

Multinucleated bone resorptive osteoclasts differentiate from bone marrow-derived monocyte/macrophage precursor cells. During osteoclast differentiation, mononuclear pre-osteoclasts change their morphology and biochemical characteristics. In this study, Raman spectroscopy with multivariate techniques such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) were used to extract biochemical information related to various cellular events during osteoclastogenesis. This technique allowed for label-free and noninvasive monitoring of differentiating cells, and clearly discriminated four different time points during osteoclast differentiation. The Raman band intensity showed significant time-dependent changes that increased up to day 4. The results of Raman spectroscopy agreed with results from atomic force microscopy (AFM) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining, a conventional biological assay. Under AFM, normal spindle-like mononuclear pre-osteoclasts became round and smaller at day 2 after treatment with a receptor activator of nuclear $factor-{\kappa}B$ ligand and they formed multinucleated giant cells at day 4. Thus, Raman spectroscopy, in combination with PCA-LDA, may be useful for noninvasive label-free quality assessment of cell status during osteoclast differentiation, enabling more efficient optimization of the bioprocesses.
