Comparisons of the physico-chemical characteristics between white Atlantic potatoes and violet Bora Valley potatoes were performed. According to the results, Bora Valley had 7% higher moisture content than Atlantic, but there were no differences in crude fat and crude ash contents. Bora Valley, however, had about 3% less crude protein content than Atlantic. In a vitamin C analysis by HPLC, the Atlantic and Bora Valley potatoes contained 14% and 39% vitamin C, respectively, indicating that Bora Valley contained about twice as much of the vitamin as Atlantic. In a vitamin C analysis by HPLC, the Atlantic and Bora Valley potatoes contained 14% and 39% vitamin C, respectively, The dietary fiber content of Bora Valley was 3.12 g per 100 g higher than that of the Atlantic variety. While Atlantic contained neither glucose nor fructose, both sugars were measured in the Bora Valley potatoes, and there was no difference in sucrose content between the cultivar.
This study observed the upper tropospheric ozone enhancement in the northern Atlantic for the Aerosols99 campaign in January-February 1999. To find the origin of this air, we have analyzed the horizontal and vertical fields of Isentropic Potential Vorticity (IPV) and Relative Humidity (RH). The arch-shaped IPV is greater than 1.5 pvus indicating stratospheric air stretches equatorward. These arch-shaped regions are connected with regions of RH less than 20%. The vertical fields of IPV and RH show the folding layer penetrating into the upper troposphere. These features support the idea that the upper tropospheric ozone enhancement originated from the stratosphere. Additionally, we have investigated the climatological frequency of stratospheric intrusion over the tropical north Atlantic using IPV and RH. The total frequency between the equator and $30^{\circ}N$ over the tropical north Atlantic exhibits a maximum in northern winter. It suggests that the stratospheric intrusion plays an important role in enhancing ozone in the upper troposphere over the tropical north Atlantic in winter and early spring. Although the tropospheric ozone residual method assumed zonally invariant stratospheric ozone, stratospheric zonal ozone variance could be caused by stratospheric intrusions. This implies that stratospheric intrusion influences ozone variance over the Atlantic in boreal winter and spring, and the intrusion is a possible source for the tropical north Atlantic paradox.
A persistent maximum over the southern tropical Atlantic in the latitudinal tropospheric ozone distribution from the CCD method is seen in the latitudinal tropospheric ozone distribution from the TOMS-Pacific method. The tropical Atlantic paradox exists in the results of both the CCD and TOMS-Pacific methods. During the northern burning season, the latitudinal distributions in the tropospheric ozone derived from the TOMS-SAGE and TOMS-Sonde methods show higher tropospheric ozone over the northern tropical Atlantic than the southern Atlantic due to a stronger gradient in stratospheric ozone relative to that from the CCD and TOMS-Pacific methods.

The observational proxy estimates suggest that the North Atlantic overturning stream function associated with the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) production and outflow was substantially weaker during the last glacial maximum (LGM) than that observed under present conditions. The impact of the changes in overturning circulation on the glacial carbon budget is investigated using a box model. The carbon box model reveals that the atmospheric $CO_2$ concentration is more sensitive to change in the overturning circulation of the North Atlantic than that of the Southern Ocean, especially when North Atlantic overturning becomes weaker. For example, when the strength of the North Atlantic overturning circulation is halved, the atmospheric $CO_2$ concentration is reduced by 50ppm of that associated with the accumulation of $CO_2$ in the deep ocean. This result implies that a weaker North Atlantic overturning circulation may play an important role in the lowering of LGM atmospheric $CO_2$ concentration.
During the northern burning season, biomass burning is found north of the equator, while satellite estimates from the residual-type method such as the CCD method show higher ozone south of the equator. This discrepancy is called the tropical Atlantic paradox (Thompson et ai., 2000). We use satellite and ground-based measurements to investigate the paradox. When the background tropospheric ozone over the Pacific Ocean from TOMS measurements is subtracted from the latitudinal total ozone distribution (e.g. TOMS-Pacific method), the results show remarkable agreement with the latitudinal stratospheric ozone distribution using the CCD method. The latitudinal tropospheric ozone distribution using the CCD method, with a persistent maximum over the southern tropical Atlantic, is also seen in the latitudinal tropospheric ozone distribution using the TOMS-Pacific method. It suggests that the complicated CCD method can be replaced by the simple TOMS-Pacific method. However, the tropical Atlantic paradox exists in the results of both the CCD and TOMS-Pacific methods during the northern buming season. In order to investigate this paradox, we compare the latitudinal ozone distributions using the CCD and TOMS-Pacific methods by using the SAGE measurements (e.g. TOMS-SAGE method) and the SHADOZ ozonesoundings (e.g. TOMS-Sonde method) assuming zonally invariant stratospheric ozone, which is the same assumption as of the CCD method. This indicates that the latitudinal tropospheric ozone distribution can be changed depending on the data that is used to determine the latitudinal stratospheric ozone distribution. Therefore, there is a possibility that the north-south gradient in stratospheric ozone over the Atlantic can be a solution of the paradox.
Genomic DNA was isolated from two geographic populations of largehead hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus) in Korea and the Atlantic Ocean. The eight arbitrarily selected primers were found to generate common, polymorphic, and specific fragments. The complexity of the banding patterns varied dramatically between primers from the two locations. The size of the DNA fragments also varied widely, from 150 bp (base pairs) to 3,000 bp. Here, 947 fragments were identified in the largehead hairtail population from Korea, and 642 in the largehead hairtail population from the Atlantic Ocean: 148 specific fragments (15.6%) in the Korean population, and 61 (9.5%) in the Atlantic population. In the Korean population, 638 common fragments with an average of 79.8 per primer were observed.; 429 common fragments, with an average of 53.6 per primer, were identified in the Atlantic population. The number of polymorphic fragments in the largehead hairtail population from Korea and the Atlantic Ocean was 76 and 27, respectively. Based on the average bandsharing values of all samples, the similarity matrix ranged from 0.784 to 0.922 in the Korean population, and from 0.833 to 0.990 in the Atlantic population. The bandsharing value of individuals within the Atlantic population was much higher than in the Korean population. The dendrogram obtained by the eight primers indicated two genetic clusters: cluster 1 (KOREAN 01~KOREAN 11), and cluster 2 (ATLANTIC 12~ATLANTIC 22). Individual KOREAN no. 10 from Korea was genetically most closely related to KOREAN no. 11 in the Korean population (genetic distance = 0.038). Ultimately, individual KOREAN no. 01 of the Korean population was most distantly related to ATLANTIC no. 16 of the Atlantic population (genetic distance = 0.708).

Physico-chemical properties of starches from potato cultivars with different colors were investigated. White Atlantic potato had 10% higher starch yield than violet Bora Valley potato. It turned out that the shape and structure of Atlantic and Bora Valley potato starch were the same by mechanical analysis using X-ray and SEM. The ratio of $50\;{\mu}m$ particle in starches from Atlantic and Bora Valley potato was $45.44\pm2.79%$ and $42.37\pm1.03%$ respectively. The particle size of Atlantic potato starch was less than that of Bora Valley; however, there was no significant difference (p<0.05). As for moisture coupling, there was no difference (p<0.05) between the two potatoes. Swelling power showed a high increase from $65^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$. The swelling power of Atlantic starch was higher by about 0.3% than that of Bora Valley at $90^{\circ}C$. Since Atlantic has smaller starch particles than Bora Valley, more starch particles are contained in the same size, and hence a difference in swelling power. As a result of measuring the gelatinization of potato starches from Atlantic and Bora Valley, a higher gelatinization start, climax, and complete temperatures occurred at Bora Valley than Atlantic. As for gelatinization enthalpy, Bora Valley starch with a higher gelatinization temperature consumed more energy for gelatinization.

Patagonian toothfish(Dissostichus eleginoides) was investigated in the southeastern Atlantic Ocean during the period of 19 March to 7 July 2007 by commercial bottom longliners. The number of 116 hauls were carried out individually in this study area by two bottom longliners during 111 days. The total catches were 89,559kg(9.91kg/100hooks) and 66,758kg(7.38kg/100hooks), respectively. Most Patagonian toothfishes were caught on the $46-48^{\circ}S$, $6-11^{\circ}E$ of southeastern Atlantic Ocean. Patagonian toothfish comprised 67.01-92.49%(by weight) of the catches in the southeastern Atlantic Ocean. No Antarctic toothfish (Dissostichus mawsoni) was caught during the surveys. Patagonian toothfish was found throughout the experimental area, but the density was considerably greater in the layer of 1,300-1,900m, where 49.88% of the fishes were caught. Smaller fishes were generally distributed to the shallow waters and larger fish were more frequently caught with the depth. Mean size of Patagonian toothfish increased with depth of capture. Accordingly economically profitable fishing activities for the Patagonian toothfish fishery requires an understanding of the size distribution of the Patagonian toothfish by depth.

The Canadian production of American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) occurs mainly in Ontario, British Columbia and the Atlantic provinces. Although ginseng is a profitable crop, its successful production is dependent on careful consideration of cultural management f include site selection, site preparation, seed selection and handling, shading actors which and mulching, pest and nutritional management, and handling of harvested crops. Diseases of particular concern in Atlantic Canada are root rots caused by Phytopkthora cactorum, Cylindrocarpon destructans and Fusarium sp. Recently two systemic fungicides (metalaxyl and fosetylal) were registered; however, growers in Atlantic Canada have experienced metalaxyl resistance resulting from the reliance on this single compound for the control of Phytophthora sap. Current research being conducted on alternative control of these diseases will be discussed. In weed control research, 2, 4-D, MCPA, clopyralid have continued to show promise for weed contro1 at low rates. In trials to evaluate non-selective herbicides as post-senescence or pre-emergence in ginseng, glyphosate (Round-up) provided control of perennials as well as willowherb and lambsquarters. In phytoxicity trials, ginseng significantly tolerated grass herbicides, including clethodim, rimsulfuron, trakloxydim, nicosulfuron and fenoxyprop. For broadleaf herbicides, significant tolerance was shown for bromoxynil, thifensulfuron methyl, flumetulam/clopyralid, thifensulfuro/tribenuron. Disease and weed management of ginseng in Atlantic Canada will be discussed.
The higher fragment sizes (>2,100 bp) are not observed in the two C. spp. populations. The six oligonucleotides primers OPA-11, OPB-09, OPB-14, OPB-20, OPC-14, and OPC-18 were used to generate the unique shared loci to each tonguesole population and shared loci by the two tonguesole populations. The hierarchical polar dendrogram indicates two main clusters: Gunsan (GUNSAN 01-GUNSAN 11) and the Atlantic (ATLANTIC 12-ATLANTIC 22) from two geographic populations of tonguesoles. The shortest genetic distance displaying significant molecular difference was between individuals' GUNSAN no. 02-GUNSAN no. 01 (genetic distance=0.038). In the long run, individual no. 02 of the ATLANTIC tonguesole was most distantly related to GUNSAN no. 06 (genetic distance=0.958). These results demonstrate that the Gunsan tonguesole population is genetically different from the Atlantic tonguesole population. The potential of PCR analysis to identify diagnostic markers for the identification of two tonguesole populations has been demonstrated. As a rule, using various oligonucleotides primers, this PCR method has been applied to identify polymorphic/specific markers particular to species and geographical population, as well as genetic diversity/polymorphism in diverse species of organisms.
