THE LAWS OF THE ITERATED LOGARITHM FOR THE TENT MAP

  • This paper considers the asymptotic behaviors of the processes generated by the classical ergodic tent map that is defined on the unit interval. We develop a sequential empirical process and get the uniform version of law of iterated logarithm for the tent map by using the bracketing entropy method.

  • A preconditioned conjugate gradient(PCG) scheme with the aid of deflation for computing a few of the smallest eigenvalues arid their corresponding eigenvectors of the large generalized eigenproblems is considered. Topically there are two types of deflation techniques, the deflation with partial shifts and an arthogonal deflation. The efficient way of determining partial shifts is suggested and the deflation-PCG schemes with various partial shifts are investigated. Comparisons of theme schemes are made with orthogonal deflation-PCG, and their asymptotic behaviors with restart operation are also discussed.

Confidence Intervals for the Difference of Binomial Proportions in Two Doubly Sampled Data

  • The construction of asymptotic confidence intervals is considered for the difference of binomial proportions in two doubly sampled data subject to false-positive error. The coverage behaviors of several likelihood based confidence intervals and a Bayesian confidence interval are examined. It is shown that a hierarchical Bayesian approach gives a confidence interval with good frequentist properties. Confidence interval based on the Rao score is also shown to have good performance in terms of coverage probability. However, the Wald confidence interval covers true value less often than nominal level.

  • We study the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary value problem of generalized Laplacian systems with a singular weight which may not be in $L^1$. Using the well-known fixed point theorem on cones, we obtain the multiplicity results of positive solutions under two different asymptotic behaviors of the nonlinearities at 0 and ${\infty}$. Furthermore, a global result of positive solutions for one special case with respect to a parameter is also obtained.

  • In this paper, using the Baire category theorem we investigate the Hyers-Ulam stability problem of pexiderized Jensen functional equation $$2f(\frac{x+y}{2})-g(x)-h(y)=0$$ and pexiderized Jensen type functional equations $$f(x+y)+g(x-y)-2h(x)=0,\\f(x+y)-g(x-y)-2h(y)=0$$ on a set of Lebesgue measure zero. As a consequence, we obtain asymptotic behaviors of the functional equations.

Statistical Inference in Non-Identifiable and Singular Statistical Models

  • When a statistical model has a hierarchical structure such as multilayer perceptrons in neural networks or Gaussian mixture density representation, the model includes distribution with unidentifiable parameters when the structure becomes redundant. Since the exact structure is unknown, we need to carry out statistical estimation or learning of parameters in such a model. From the geometrical point of view, distributions specified by unidentifiable parameters become a singular point in the parameter space. The problem has been remarked in many statistical models, and strange behaviors of the likelihood ratio statistics, when the null hypothesis is at a singular point, have been analyzed so far. The present paper studies asymptotic behaviors of the maximum likelihood estimator and the Bayesian predictive estimator, by using a simple cone model, and show that they are completely different from regular statistical models where the Cramer-Rao paradigm holds. At singularities, the Fisher information metric degenerates, implying that the cramer-Rao paradigm does no more hold, and that he classical model selection theory such as AIC and MDL cannot be applied. This paper is a first step to establish a new theory for analyzing the accuracy of estimation or learning at around singularities.

Canonical Correlation: Permutation Tests and Regression

  • In this paper, we present a permutation test to select the number of pairs of canonical variates in canonical correlation analysis. The existing chi-squared test is known to be limited to normality in use. We compare the existing test with the proposed permutation test and study their asymptotic behaviors through numerical studies. In addition, we connect canonical correlation analysis to regression and we we show that certain inferences in regression can be done through canonical correlation analysis. A regression analysis of real data through canonical correlation analysis is illustrated.

  • 플란지 평해도파관에 의한 TE-모드의 산란 및 수신을 해석한다. 푸리에 변환을 이요하여 주파수 영역에서 산란파를 표시하여, 경계조건을 사용하여 산란파의 점근해를 구하였다. 수치해석을 통하여 산란특성을 조사하였다.

Likelihood Based Confidence Intervals for the Difference of Proportions in Two Doubly Sampled Data with a Common False-Positive Error Rate

  • Lee (2010) developed a confidence interval for the difference of binomial proportions in two doubly sampled data subject to false-positive errors. The confidence interval seems to be adequate for a general double sampling model subject to false-positive misclassification. However, in many applications, the false-positive error rates could be the same. On this note, the construction of asymptotic confidence interval is considered when the false-positive error rates are common. The coverage behaviors of nine likelihood based confidence intervals are examined. It is shown that the confidence interval based Rao score with the expected information has good performance in terms of coverage probability and expected width.
