  • The purpose of this study was to research the cosmeceutical activity of 70% ethanol extracts when Brassica oleracea var. italica Plenck (BO) was dried under red lighting (RLD), blue lighting (BLD), red+blue lighting (RBLD), or white lighting (WLD). The electron-donating abilities of 70% ethanol extracts from drying BO under RLD, BLD, RBLD, and WLD were 62.8%, 68.1%, 60.9%, and 69.9%, respectively, at a concentration of 500 ppm. The superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activities of 70% ethanol extracts from drying BO under RLD, BLD, RBLD, and WLD were 39.2%, 47.2%, 19.6%, and 21.6%, respectively, at a concentration of 1,000 ppm. In terms of xanthine oxidase inhibition effects, the proportions of 70% ethanol extracts after drying BO under RLD, BLD, RBLD, and WLD were 45.1%, 56.2%, 38.8%, and 53.3%, respectively, at a concentration of 1,000 ppm. The tyrosinase inhibition effects of 70% ethanol extracts when BO was dried under RLD, BLD, RBLD, and WLD were 21.0%, 13.1%, 26.0%, and 19.1%, respectively, at a concentration of 1,000 ppm. The collagenase inhibition effect of 70% ethanol extracts when BO was dried under RLD, BLD, RBLD, and WLD were 47.4%, 20.8%, 54.6%, and 37.2%, respectively, at a concentration of 1,000 ppm. The astringent inhibition effects of 70% ethanol extracts when BO was dried under RLD, BLD, RBLD, and WLD were 21.5%, 39.6%, 40.0%, and 51.6%, respectively, at a concentration of 5,000 ppm. All of these findings suggest that BO extracts dried under RLD, BLD, RBLD, and WLD have great potential as a cosmeceutical ingredient with good biological activity.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the changes in qualities of soft persimmon by freezing and defrosting. Testing varieties were Sangjudungsi and Chunsdobansi that were cultivated on Sangju and Chungdo regions, chief cultivation of astringent persimmon in Kyongbuk province. Dropping time to 40 degrees below zero of the flesh was 10∼20 minutes longer in Chungdobansi than that in Sangiudungsi. Freezing temperature of astringent persimmon was 2∼3 degrees below zero. Occurence rates of cracked fruit during freezing storage were 24.5% in Sangjudungsi and 15.5% in Chungdobansi. Defrosting of Sangjudungsi and Chungdobansi took 150 minutes and 120 minutes at 5$^{\circ}C$, respectively. L values of chromaticity were some lower after defrosting than that of frozen soft persimmon, and a and b values decreased during defrosting rapidly. Soluble solid contents of frozen soft persimmon almost didn't change during freezing, that is, harvesting, softening, frosting and defrosting steps. Defrosting completion time to core part took 4 hours and 30 minutes in Sangjudungsi and 4 hours and 20 minutes in Chungdobansi at ordinary temperature (10.9∼14.8$^{\circ}C$).

  • The aim of this study was to propose Rosa multiflora (R. multiflora) as a cosmetic material for refining pores, and the ethanolic extract of R. multiflora (RME) was used to identify changes in various factors related to sebum regulation, astringency, and extracellular matrix, which are known to affect pores, and the effects were confirmed through clinical trials. The effects of these changes were confirmed through clinical trials. As a result, RME suppresses the excessive production of sebum, and it possesses DPPH radical scavenging ability through an astringent tannin component. Futhermore, RME inhibited 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1) activity and matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) production, and it increased hyaluronic acid synthesis. In clinical trials, it was confirmed that RME significantly reduced the area, depth, number, volume, and density of pores-key parameters for assessing pores-and it also reduced sebum levels. This suggests that RME has an astringent effect and could be used as a cosmetic ingredient to improve the appearance of pores by controlling sebum production and influencing ECM-related factors.

  • This study was conducted in order to promote the utilization of Hovenia dulcis Thunb as food. The physicochemical properties and sensory characteristics of the extracts from the leaf, fruit, stalk and stem were examined. The extract of stem was the brightest in L value (p<0.05), but the lowest in b value (p<0.01). By the sensory evaluation, the external appearance was the best in the extract of stem. The extract of leaf was the darkest in color and that of stem the lightest. The bitter and astringent taste was stronger from the leaf compared with other parts. The extract of fruits stalk of Korean Hovenia dulcis was preferred in most of attributes. The total sugar content was the highest from the fruits stalk. Among free amino acids, aspartic acid, glutamic acid and alanine were rich in order. Potassium contents were the highest among minerals from the fruits stalk, leaf and stem. Ca and Mg followed the next. The results were the same both in Korean and in Chinese tree. Among organic acids, malic acid was the most in the fruits stalk, leaf and stem. It was followed by citric acid. In the test of free sugar, glucose was the most and followed by sucrose and fructose in the fruits stalk. Fructose was contained the most in leaf and stem.

  • Changes in antioxidative substance levels in eleven different cultivars of persimmon leaves during growth were investigated. In general, the contents of soluble phenols, L-ascorbic acid and flavonoids in astringent persimmon leaves(APL) were higher than those of nonastringent persimmon leaves(NAPL). The soluble phenol contents in APL and NAPL showed a tendency to decrease throughout leaf growth. L-ascorbic acid content in APL decreased rapidly during growth, whereas its content in NAPL reached its highest value at the late of July, and then decreased rapidly. Major flavonoids in APL and NAPL were quercetin and Kaempferol which were present in conjugate forms. Before acid hydrolysis, the contents of kaempferol and quercetin in APL and NAPL remained at a relatively constant level until the late of July, and then decreased slightly. After acid hydrolysis, kaempferol contents in APL and NAPL varied significantly by cultivar and growth stage, while quercetin contents decreased slowly until the late of July, and then increased drastically, reached a maximum at the early of August, afterward continuously decreased. These results suggest that APL harvested at the early of June may be useful as potential sources of natural antioxidants.

  • It has long teen known in herbal medicine that the mugwort not only exerts a strong hemostatic and parasiticidal actions but also has therapeutic effects for stomachache and diarrhea. In recent pharmaceutical botany the mugwort is known to have antipyretic and astringent actions also. Among the major principles which have been found in the leaves and stems of mugwort are inulin, alkaloids, vitamines, and esestial oil. It is well known that santonin, one of the well known parasiticides, is one of the glucosides extracted from the limited species of mugwort. The present study was undertaken to investigate effects of mugwort(Artemisia asiatica Nakai) on the motility of isolated rabbit duodenum. The results obtained are as follows: At does of 0.2%, 0.5% and 1. 0% AAJ(Artemisia asiatica juice) markedly enhanced contractility of isolated duodenum and tonus of the intestine was also augmented with doses of 0.5% and 1.0%. The augmentative effect of AAJ on intestinal motility was not affected by pretreatment with epinephrine and avil while it was completely abolished by atropine. Therefore it is strongly suggested that augmentative action of AAJ on duodenal motility was exerted solely through muscarinic cholinergic receptors.

  • Quality characteristics of sausage with added pine needle powder (0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, and 2.5%) as an ingredient. The basic ingredients of sausage consisted of pork meat 60%, olive oil 20%, and ice water 20%. Sensory properties of sausage were analyzed by a sensory test, and the texture and color characteristics were measured using a texturometer and color meter, respectively. In the results of the sensory test, taste, texture, and overall preference were highest in the sample with added 1.5% pine needle powder. The sausage with added 1.5% pine needle powder was moderate in color intensity, pine needle flavor, and astringent taste. Hardness and gumminess of sausage were higher in 1.0% and 1.5% pine needle powder. However, springness and chewiness of sausage showed no significant differences. In terms of color intensity of sausage, L-value and a-value were lower and b-value was higher, depending on the pine needle powder amount. Development of off-flavor of sausage during storage was greater in 0% and 1.5% added sausages than in 2.0% sausage with increasing storage time. As a conclusion, sausages with added 1.5% and 2.0% pine needle powder were the most suitable for making functional sausage with added pine needle powder.
