Effects of Source and Application Rate of Phosphorus on Growth and Arbuscular Mycorrhizae Formation of Trifoliate Orange in Volcanic Ash Soil (화산회토양에서 인 공급원과 시용 수준이 탱자유묘의 생육과 공생균근 형성에 미치는 영향)

  • The effects of two phosphorus sources (fused phosphate and rock phosphate), applied at different rates, on growth, arbuscular-mycorrhizae(AM) formation in roots and nutrient contents of trifoliate orange grown in an uncultivated volcanic ash soil were investigated in a greenhouse. The seedlings were either inoculated with AM fungi or left uninnoculated. Growth of seedlings were best in the treatments of 156-272 mg P/kg with fused phosphate. Although the applied P in the rack phosphate treatments were nearly same or much higher comparing to the fused phosphate treatments, seedling growth were significantly less. Soil available P in the treatment of 272 mg P/kg of fused phosphate was maintained in the range of 3-5 mg/kg during the experiment, and the AM formation was about 60% in average. In the treatments of lower rates of fused phosphate application or of rock phosphate application, soil available P were lower than 3 mg P/kg and AM formations were less than 30%. Significant increases were found in seedling growth and nutrient absorption due to AM fungi inoculation, and the effects were much more significant in the treatments of higher AM formation. In most of citrus groves in Cheju island, soil available P is much higher than 200 mg P/kg, and average AM formation in citrus roots is less than 30%. Results obtained in this study show that the formation of AM can be increased at much lower level of available P than the present levels found in citrus groves.

Effects of Dietary Non-phytate Phosphorus Levels on Egg Production, Shell Quality and Nutrient Retention in White Leghorn Layers

  • An experiment was conducted (28 to 44 weeks) to study the laying performance, shell quality, and nutrient retention of White Leghorn layers fed different levels of non-phytate phosphorus (NPP). Six levels of NPP (0.15, 0.18, 0.21, 0.24, 0.27 and 0.30%) at a constant calcium (Ca) level (3.5%) in maize-soya-deoiled rice bran based diets were formulated, and each experimental diet was offered ad libitum for 16 weeks to five replicates with five birds in each replicate. The body weight of WL layers fed diet containing 0.15% NPP was significantly (p<0.05) lower than those fed diet with 0.30% NPP, at 44 weeks of age. However, the hen day egg production, egg weight, daily feed intake and feed consumed per dozen eggs were not influenced by the variation in the NPP levels in the diet. The bone ash content was significantly (p<0.05) higher in the birds fed 0.30% NPP as compared with those fed diets up to 0.24% NPP. Bone ash content was intermediate in the birds fed diet containing 0.27% NPP. The tibia strength followed the same trend as that of bone ash. Dietary NPP content had no influence on serum Ca and protein concentration and activity of alkaline phosphatase. However, serum inorganic P concentration increased linearly with NPP content in the diet. The concentration of P was significantly (p<0.05) higher in the birds fed 0.27% NPP or higher as compared with those fed 0.15% NPP. Levels of dietary NPP had no influence on egg quality parameters like shell wt, shell thickness, shell strength and specific gravity. The retention of nutrients such as DM, N and Ca were comparable among the WL layers fed different levels of NPP. However, the retention of P decreased linearly with increase in the level of NPP in the diet. The retention of P in the birds fed diets up to 0.24% NPP in the diet was comparable, however further increasing the content of NPP (either 0.27% or 0.30%) reduced the retention of P. Based on the results of the present study, 0.15% NPP (180 mg/b/d) in the diets of WL layers is adequate for optimum production performance during 28 to 44 weeks of age, however, WL layers require 0.27% NPP (324 mg /b/d) in the diet for optimum production with better bone mineralization.

Trends of Thermochemical Technology for the Recovery of Phosphorus from Sewage Sludge Ash (열화학적 방법에 의한 하수 슬러지 소각재에서의 인 회수 기술 동향)

  • Phosphorus (P) is an essential and irreplaceable element for all living organisms, and it is widely used as a fertilizer. Unfortunately, it is estimated that phosphate reservoir is depleted within about 100 years. Sewage sludge ash (SSA) is an alternative resource for P recovery because of its high P content. However, SSA cannot be directly used as a fertilizer due to heavy metals in it and low P bioavailability. Thermochemical treatment with Cl donor is known to reduce heavy metal contents and increase P bioavailability of SSA. Literature review on thermochemical technologies of SSA for the reduction of heavy metals and bioavailability enhancement has been carried out to estimate the status of current P recovery technology and to develop strategic future research plan for P recovery. The review showed that $CaCl_2$ and $MgCl_2$ were the most effective Cl donors and reaction temperature (< $1000^{\circ}C$) was the critical operation condition for the reduction. The removal efficiency depends on the species of heavy metals. Thermochemical technology of SSA for P recovery showed the possibility of commercial application in the near future to overcome the coming crisis of human sustainability by P depletion, but it needs cost effectiveness and more ecofriendly process to reduce energy consumption.

A Study on Changes of the Benthic Environment and Microbial Community in Estuarine Polluted Sediments by Mixing Granulated Coal Ash (석탄회 조립물이 혼합된 하구 오염 퇴적물의 환경 및 미생물 구조 변화에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the benthic environmental and microbial community structure were investigated by mixing granulated coal ash(GCA) and contaminated estuary sediments. Estuary sediments and GCA were mixed in a ratio of 8:2 and allowed to interact for 1 month, then sediment environmental factors were investigated. The pH of the experimental sediment was mixed increased to 11. The concentration of DIP(Dissolved inorganic phosphorus) in the experimental case decreased by 30 % compared to the control case, and this should be due to formation of calcium phosphate through the chemical reaction of DIP and calcium which diluted from GCA. The high abundance of Gammaproteobacteria seen in the experimental sediment compare to the control can af ect the DIP reduction. The DIN(Dissolved inorganic nitrogen) concentration increased over two times in the experimental case than the control, and this should be due to the high pH condition and release of NH4+-N from the GCA. Microorganisms related to nitrogen circulation were not identified in both the control and experimental cases. It was confirmed that the GCA were effective in reducing the DIP concentration in contaminated estuary sediment, and that benthic microbial communities were shown to influenced the phosphorus circulation.

A Study on the Nutritional Values and Variations of Food Wastes according to Seasons and Sources (계절별 및 배출원별 남은 음식물의 영양적 가치 평가)

  • An experiment was conducted to determine the nutritional values and variations of food wastes according to seasons and sources. Food wastes were sampled monthly from Feb. to Aug. at gathering sites from home kitchens, school restaurants and Korean food restaurants. chemical analyses revealed that crude fiber and NaCl contents were in the range of 5.41∼10.36 and 3.67∼5.40%, respectively, and the variations were especially high in summer. Ash content was highest in spring. With regard to the sources, the wastes from Korean food restaurants was highest in ash, calcium and phosphorus. On the other hand, crude fiber and fat were highest in the waste from house kitchens and NaCl in those from school restaurants.

A Longitudinal Study on Calcium, phosphorous and Magnesium Contents in the Breast Milk of Lacto-ove-vegetarian (채식 수유부의 모유중 수유기간별 칼슘, 인, 마그네슘 함량에 관한 연구)

  • The longitudinal changes on contents of calcium, phosphorous and magnesium of breast milk of 23 Korean lacto-ovo-vegetarians(primiparae=11, multiparae=12) at 0.5, 1, 2 and 3 months postpartum have been studied. The mean ash content of breast milk per 100ml was 0.21g in total lactating women(n=23), and it decreased significantly during lactation(p<0.05). The mean calcium, phosphorous and magnesium contents of breast milk per 100ml were 26.83mg, 14.01mg and 2.72mg, respectively. Body calcium and phosphorous contents decreased significantly during lactation(p<0.05), but magnesium content tended to increase during lactation. There were no significant differences in ash, calcium, phosphorous and magnesium contents between primiparae and multiparae. The ratio of calcium to phosphorus was about 1.95:1 in breast milk and 0.62 : 1 in maternal dietary intake. In calcium and phosphorous, no correlation was found between maternal dietary intake and the concentration in breast milk. This study suggests that the contents of calcium, phosphorous and magnesium in lacto-ovo-vegetarian breast milk are not different from the concentrations of those in non-vegetarian.

Requirement of Non-phytate Phosphorus in Synthetic Broiler Breeder Diet

  • An experiment was conducted to study the laying performance, shell quality, bone mineralization, hatchability of eggs and performance of progeny (weight at day one and 14 d of age, P content in day old chick, leg score and survivability of chicks) of synthetic broiler breeders fed different levels of non-phytate phosphorus (NPP). Six levels of NPP (1.2, 1.8, 2.4, 3.0, 3.6 and 4.2 g/kg diet) at a constant calcium (Ca) level (30 g/kg) in a maize-soya-deoiled rice bran based diet were tested. Levels of dicalcium phosphate, shell grit and deoiled rice bran were adjusted to achieve the desired levels of NPP and Ca. Each level of NPP was fed with a weighed quantity of feed (160 g/b/d) to 40 female broiler breeders from 25 to 40 weeks of age housed in individual cages. Each bird was considered as a replicate. Egg production, feed/egg mass, body weight, egg weight, shell weight, shell thickness, egg specific gravity, serum Ca content and tibia breaking strength were not influenced (p>0.05) by the variation in dietary NPP levels tested. Increasing the dietary levels of NPP did not influence the hatchability of eggs, phosphorus (P) contents both in egg yolk and day old chick, chick body weight at day one and 14 d of age, leg score and survivability of chicks up to 14 d of age. Maximum response ($p{\leq}0.01$) in shell breaking strength, tibia ash and serum inorganic P contents were observed at NPP levels of 2.09, 2.25 and 3.50 g per kg diet, respectively. The retention of Ca increased, while the P retention decreased ($p{\leq}0.01$) with increasing dietary levels of NPP. Though maximum responses in shell breaking strength, bone ash and serum inorganic P were observed at NPP higher than 1.2 g/kg diet, the broiler breeder performance in terms of egg production, shell quality, hatchability of eggs and progeny performance and their survivability was not influenced by dietary NPP concentrations. It is concluded that synthetic broiler breeders maintained in cages do not require more than 1.2 g NPP/kg diet with a daily intake of 192 mg NPP/b/d during 24 to 40 weeks of age.

Comparison of Ash and Mineral Contents in Local Agricultural Products (지역농산물의 회분 및 무기질 함량 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate ash and mineral contents of agricultural products that are widely and specifically grown in Korea, including 23 fruits, 11 cereals and specialty crops, and 11 leaves and vegetables. Pre-treatment of mineral was performed by microwave method. Mineral contents were analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrophotometry Mass (ICP-MS). Ash contents ranged from 0.20 to 0.69 g/100 g in fruits, 1.62 to 3.80 g/100 g in cereals, and 0.28 to 2.93 g/100 g in leaves and vegetables. Among the 45 samples, the highest contents of ash were found in quinoa (average 3.80 g/100 g), the highest contents of calcium (Ca) were found in Hansan ramie leaves (average 894.79 mg/100 g), the highest contents of phosphorus (P) were found in yellow amaranth(average 661.88 mg/100 g), the highest contents of potassium (K) were found in quinoa (average 1,455.38 mg/100 g), the highest contents of magnesium (Mg) were found in red amaranth (average 434.02 mg/100 g), the highest contents of molybdenum (Mo) were found in moringa (average $482.50{\mu}g/100g$), and the highest contents of selenium (Se) were found in apple mango(average $23.67{\mu}g/100g$).

Effect of High Phytase Inclusion Rates on Performance of Broilers Fed Diets Not Severely Limited in Available Phosphorus

  • Phytate is not only an unavailable source of phosphorus (P) for broilers but it also acts as an anti-nutrient, reducing protein and mineral absorption, increasing endogenous losses and reducing broiler performance. The objective of this study was to investigate the anti-nutritional effects of phytate by including high levels of phytase in diets not severely limited in available P. A total of 768 male Arbor Acres broilers were distributed in six treatments of eight replicate pens of 16 birds each consisting of a positive control diet (PC), positive control with 500 FTU/kg phytase, negative control (NC) diet with lower available P and calcium (Ca) levels and the same NC diet with 500, 1,000 or 1,500 FTU/kg phytase. Body weight gain (BWG), feed intake (FI), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and mortality were determined at 21 and 35 d of age while foot ash was determined in four birds per pen at 21 d of age. FI, FCR and foot ash where not affected by the lower mineral diets at 21 d of age nor by the enzyme inclusion but broilers fed lower Ca and available P diets had lower BWG. At 35 d of age no difference was observed between broilers fed the positive or NC diets but broilers fed 500, 1,000 and 1,500 FTU/kg on top of the NC diet had better FCR than broilers fed the positive control diet. When compared to birds fed a diet adequate in P, birds fed the same diet included with 500, 1,000 and 1,500 FTU/kg of phytase in marginally deficient available P and Ca diets had an improvement of performance. These results support the concept that hydrolysing phytate and reducing the anti-nutritional effects of phytate improves bird performance on marginally deficient diets that were not covering the P requirement of birds.

A Longitudinal Study on Calcium, Phosphorus and Magnesium Contents of Breast Milk from Lactating Women in Seoul Area (서울지역 수유부의 모유의 수유기간별 칼슘, 인, 마그네슘 함량에 관한 연구)

  • The longitudinal study was done to study the effect of length of lactation on mineral content of breast milk and to find out basic data on nutritional status for infants and lactation women in Korea. Milk was collected from primiparae(n=10) and multiparae(n=6) at 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 months postpartum. During lactation the content of total ash, calcium, phosphours decreased significantly (;<0.001), but magnesium increased significantly (p<0.001). Total ash, calcium, phosphrus and magnesium contents of breast milk per 100ml were as 0.22g, 27.25mg, 14.67mg and 2.77mg in total lactating women(n=16), respectively. These contents were not significantly different between primiparae and multiparae. A ratio of calcium to phosphorus was about 1.88:1 in breast milk and 0.50:1 in maternal dietary intake. No correlation was found between maternal dietary intake and mineral content of breast milk.
