Evaluation of Repair Welding Method and PWHT Properties for Degraded CrMoV Casting Steel (열화된 CrMoV 주조강에 대한 보수 용접 방법 및 후열처리 특성 평가)

  • Recently the growth of the renewable energy production has caused the flexible operation in LNG combined cycle power plant. Due to the rapid start and stop operations, large CrMoV castings used for turbine casings and valve bodies could be distorted and lead to replacement or welding repair. This study was performed to find out the characteristics of the repair welding for a damaged CrMoV casting steel. A typical field repair method (arc & TIG welding) was applied to making specimens. The degraded N2 packing head sample from the steam turbine was used. The evaluations of weldments were carried out in terms of microstructural characterization, microhardness measurements, tensile, creep-rupture and fatigue tests. Color etching was also applied for better understanding of welding microstructures. As the boundary between HAZ and base material was deteriorated by welding, it caused microstructural changes formed during PWHT and the shortening of the remaining residual life. By comparing the properties according to repair welding method, it was possible to derive what important welding factors were. As a result, arc welding method is more suitable for repair welding on CrMoV castings.

Study on the Casting Method and Manufacturing Process of Bronze Bells Excavated from the Hoeamsa Temple Site (회암사지 금탁(琴鐸)의 주조방법과 가공기술 연구)

  • Three bronze bells excavated from the Hoeamsa temple site were investigated for their microstructures and chemical compositions in an effort to understand the technology applied in fabrication, which may represent the related industry established in the early Joseon period. The result shows that the bells were cast from alloys of approximately 85% copper-8% tin-7% lead. The chemical analysis for ten trace elements shows that they were all kept below 0.3 weight %, suggesting that the alloys were made of relatively well-refined copper, tin and lead. The presence of sulfur and iron indicates that chalcopyrite or chalcocite may have been used in the smelting of copper. Evidence has been found that the bells were cast by pouring the liquid metal from the top of the sand molds that were set up in an upright position. No additional treatments, thermal or mechanical, other than a little grinding were applied upon the completion of casting. After the shaping process, a balancing plate was attached to the top of the bell using a steel connection ring. The connection assembly was then fixed to the main body by using molten bronze as a solder. The surface inscription was found carved using different techniques. The differences in the order of strokes and the calligraphic style indicate that the carving was carried out by more than one master. In the absence of documentary evidence on past bronze technology, the present bronze bells with known chronology, provenance and the main agent of production, prove to be a rare and valuable archaeological material for the understanding of the related technology in use in the early Joseon period.

Microstructural Changes of AA1100 According to the Processing Number of Multi-Axial Diagonal Forging (MADF) (다축대각단조(MADF) 가공횟수에 따른 AA1100의 미세조직 변화)

  • This study investigates the effects of multi-axial diagonal forging (MADF) processing number on the microstructures of AA1100 fabricated using MADF processes. The cast AA1100 was annealed at $400^{\circ}C$ for 3hrs in $N_2$ atmosphere and cut into $25mm^3$ cubes for the MADF processes. The MADF process consist of plane forging with a thickness reduction of 30% and a diagonal forging with a diagonal forging angle of 135 degrees. In order to analyze the microstructural variations based on the number of repetitions, 1, 2, 3 and 4 cycles of the MADF process were performed. AA1100 specimens were successfully deformed without cracking of the surface for up to 4 cycles of MADF. The grain size, average misorientation and average grain orientation spread (GOS) of MADF processed materials were analyzed using EBSD technique. The results showed that MADF process effectively refined the microstructure of AA1100 with an initial average grain size of $337.4{\mu}m$. The average grain sizes of specimens which were MADF processed for 2, 3, 4 cycles were refined to be $1.9{\mu}m$, $1.6{\mu}m$, $1.4{\mu}m$, respectively. The grain refinement appeared saturated when AA1100 got MADF processed over 2 cycles. When the specimen was subjected to two or more cycles of MADF, the degree of decrease in the average grain size drastically decreased with an increase in the number of cycle due to the softening phenomena such as dynamic recovery or dynamic recrystallization during processing.

Effects of Microstructure on the Creep Properties of the Lead-free Sn-based Solders (미세조직이 Sn계 무연솔더의 크리프 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • The Sn-based lead-free solders with varying microstructure were prepared by changing the cooling rate from the melt. Bulky as-cast SnAg, SnAgCu, and SnCu, alloys were cold rolled and thermally stabilized before the creep tests so that there would be very small amount of microstructural change during creep (TS), and thin specimens were water quenched from the melt (WQ) to simulate microstructures of the as-reflowed solders in flip chips. Cooling rates of the WQ specimens were 140∼150 K/sec, and the resultant $\beta-Sn$ globule size was 5∼10 times smaller than that of the TS specimens. Subsequent creep tests showed that the minimum strain rate of TS specimens was about $10_2$ times higher than that of the WQ specimens. Fractographic analyses showed that creep rupture of the TS-SnAgCu specimens occurred by the nucleation of voids on the $Ag_3Sn$ Sn or $Cu_6Sn_5$ particles in the matrix, their subsequent growth by the power-law creep, and inter-linkage of microcracks to form macrocracks which led to the fast failure. On the other hand, no creep voids were found in the WQ specimens due to the mode III shear rupture coming from the thin specimens geometry.
