  • This study proposes a decorative typeface which is produced through the concept of trigonometric functions in an open-source programming language known as Processing. First, the theoretical background of Processing and trigonometric functions as well as previous research in this area are analyzed. Second, basic modules of 'V', 'I', 'O', and 'M' were created for use as the final alphabet typeface with the concept of a trigonometric function. Third, a decorative parabolic curve that encircles the base module was created. Finally, the modules created on Processing were edited in Adobe Illustrator to create a typeface set with characters from A to Z. Various artworks using Programming can produce an infinite number of different versions by modifying only some of the variables and codes, and this method can include multimedia features such as text, images, videos, interactive art and various forms of content and media. Therefore, with regard to expression, the possibilities are endless. In this study, I attempt to expand the field of visual culture using programming and computational methodologies. In contrast to the digital typeface production method, which relies on existing graphic tools, this study is meaningful because it expands the range of use of decorative typefaces.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze on the aesthetic collaboration appeared on the modernism arts and Haute Couture designers in the 20th century as the necessity of analyzing on the pure meaning of collaboration which is a talking point associated with culture of the 21st century. The study was performed by means of documentary method. The results are as follows; First, it was analyzed that the collaboration in the pure meaning of the first half of the 20th century had partial common points which was stated as Art Inspiration in the arts collaboration out of the 21st century collaboration. Secondly, the Haute Couture designers(Paul Poiret, Gabriell Chanel, Madeleine Vionnet and Elsa Schiaparelli) have common point that they involved into the artworking through active exchange with many artists from diversified fields in the 20th century. Especially, the characteristics of the collaboration in the forms, materials and color of their works were appeared visually. When the collaboration in the first half of 20th century was regarded entirely as mental matter of manifestation of pure aesthetics, in can be said that the big difference was mostly the maximization of mutual interest between collaborator and collaboratee in the 21st century collaboration.

  • Recently, generative adversarial networks (GANs) is a field of research that has rapidly emerged wherein many studies conducted shows overwhelming results. Initially, this was at the level of imitating the training dataset. However, the GAN is currently useful in many fields, such as transformation of data categories, restoration of erased parts of images, copying facial expressions of humans, and creation of artworks depicting a dead painter's style. Although many outstanding research achievements have been attracting attention recently, GANs have encountered many challenges. First, they require a large memory facility for research. Second, there are still technical limitations in processing high-resolution images over 4K. Third, many GAN learning methods have a problem of instability in the training stage. However, recent research results show images that are difficult to distinguish whether they are real or fake, even with the naked eye, and the resolution of 4K and above is being developed. With the increase in image quality and resolution, many applications in the field of design and image and video editing are now available, including those that draw a photorealistic image as a simple sketch or easily modify unnecessary parts of an image or a video. In this paper, we discuss how GANs started, including the base architecture and latest technologies of GANs used in high-resolution, high-quality image creation, image and video editing, style translation, content transfer, and technology.

  • Kuramata Shiro's design has been evaluated as an unseen type of beauty. He created totally different aesthetics from functional furniture by utilizing glass, acrylic, and expanded steel mesh which usually are inappropriate for making furniture. Kuramata told that his design always starts from zero status. By doing so, he could be free from the existing notion and form of furniture. This means that every function and every form must be based on his own understanding and experiment in order to produce newness. Owing to these efforts, we can regard his design as artworks. Kuramata tried to bring forth formative lines inside contour of furniture rather than to deform only the formal outlines of furniture. These lines are very delicate and sometimes ephemeral. But they establish formal potentiality of phenomenological being of beauty. Also those lines are built from humble industrial material but they open the truth of thing itself and introduce the beauty to field of aletheia. At the same time, transcending limitation of function and use, they leave pure form and temporariness. So, lines become a field of Heideggerian rift which produces embodiment of form. We can appreciate his design through these lines that are relatively thin but vivid enough to follow his original world of art.

  • Textile fabrication based on traditional culture has grown very attentive as fashion icons in recent so that designers, especially, who want to be the center of attention, may be a public interest and introduce their own culture to the world. In the 21st century by more focusing of our culture, Korean textile designs that is applicable our traditional motifs are required to develop and also its motifs could be comprehensibly got the spirit and the inherent meaning, and should be fuse with modern touch and developed practical design in daily life. Of all many different patterns, this paper placed an emphasis on three of main traditional motifs as a floral arabesque pattern, ivy pattern and butterfly pattern. The traditional motifs were applied through a hand-made technology and the professional design program of TexPro, and then the textile design was simulated by Photoshop to approaching the apparel design. Through these produced artworks, we have conscious that the oriental images have associate traditional meaning and the traditional design tried to express co-existence past and present. Moreover, we believe that the surface pattern design of textile for printing was good chance to relive the traditional meaning, and the tradition is recognized not mere old and expects more advance with applications.

  • Smart structures and intelligent systems play pivotal roles in numerous areas of applied sciences ranging from civil engineering to computer and communications systems engineering. Although such structures and systems have been intensively deployed in these areas, they have been, interestingly, very rarely deployed in the field of cultural heritage preservation. This paper presents one of thefirst such attempts. A new methodology is describedthat deploys smart structures andlinks them with artificial intelligence methods. These solutions are referred toas advanced hybrid engineering artefacts. By their use, important environmental factors can be monitoredin hard to access, remote or unsafe locationsby minimizing the need for human involvement. In addition toproviding safety the methodologyalso reduces costs and, most importantly, providesa new way to modelany particular micro-environment in a much more efficient way than this is possible with traditional ways. Last but not least, although themethodology has been developed for cultural heritage preservation, its application areas are much broader and it is expected that it will find its applicationin other domains like civil engineering and ecology.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the design methods and characteristics of papercraft fashion from 2001 to 2015. The study has been conducted through theoretical research and case study. Overall, types of papercraft expressions are classified into the following four categories: narrative papercraft fashion, organic papercraft fashion, variable papercraft fashion, and recycling papercraft fashion. The characteristics and aspects of each type of papercraft is described below. First, narrative papercraft fashion expresses as factual description of the natural environment. These works convey fantastic image by showing fairy tale animals or plants using paper folding or cutting. Second, organic papercraft fashion creates a futuristic shape by expressing organic parts in nature. Also, it often depicts future-oriented images by repeatedly representing organic shapes using uniform patterns in nature. Third, variable papercraft fashion expresses a variety of changing shapes through a flexible design based on the style of wearing. This variation may be accomplished through changeable dress connected to human gestures. Variable papercraft represents play-fulness, which conveys enjoyment to the wearer and the audience. Fourth, recycling papercraft fashion uses paper materials of the past, and recreates them into artworks through handicraft techniques. Recycling papercraft conveys high value added fashion by dissolving the material into pulp.
