  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the application of Column Jet Method(CJM) as countermeasure against settlement and slope sliding of existing marine structure due to embankment load behind reclaimed revetment. CJM is to make high-strengthened body by compacting and grouting cement mortar after forming artificial space in the ground with ground relaxition machine or high pressure water jetting. Before the ground was reinforced by CJM, the result of slope stability analysis was not satisfy the allowable safe ratio, but after the ground was reinforced by CJM, the stability of slope was over the allowable safe ratio and stable, Therefor, the application of CJM to restraint settlement and sliding of marine structure was very satisfactory.

  • A simulation-based approach that can be used to systematically model the uncertainties of seismic loading and geotechnical property is presented in the context of reliability analysis of slope stability. The uncertainty of seismic loading is studied by generating a large series of hazard-compatible artificial motions, and by using them in subsequent response analyses. The stochastic nature of spatially varying material properties and also the uncertainty arising from insufficient information are treated in the framework of random fields. The simulation-based analyses indicate that in a seismically less active region, a moderate variability in soil properties has a relatively large effect as much as characterization of earthquake hazard on the computed risk of slope failure and excessive slope deformations.

  • Weathered soil slope loses its shear strength if it is exposed in the air for a long time or in contact with water. And this kind of strength loss is remarkable in dam slope which has very big difference in water level according to the season. In this study, shear strength loss of weathered soil due to saturation had been found out through dryness and wetness repetition direct shear test. Also relation between penetration blow number(Nc) and shear strength parameter had been found out through small sized dynamic cone penetration test device and the correlation equation of Nc had been proposed through artificial neural network analysis to estimate shear strength parameter easily.

  • Geological field surveys and a series of laboratory tests were conducted to obtain data related to landslides in Sancheok-myeon, Chungju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea where many landslides occurred in the summer of 2020. The magnitudes of various factors' influence on landslide occurrence were evaluated using logistic regression analysis and an artificial neural network. Undisturbed specimens were sampled according to landslide occurrence, and dynamic cone penetration testing measured the depth of the soil layer during geological field surveys. Laboratory tests were performed following the standards of ASTM International. To solve the problem of multicollinearity, the variation inflation factor was calculated for all factors related to landslides, and then nine factors (shear strength, lithology, saturated water content, specific gravity, hydraulic conductivity, USCS, slope angle, and elevation) were determined as influential factors for consideration by machine learning techniques. Minimum-maximum normalization compared factors directly with each other. Logistic regression analysis identified soil depth, slope angle, saturated water content, and shear strength as having the greatest influence (in that order) on the occurrence of landslides. Artificial neural network analysis ranked factors by greatest influence in the order of slope angle, soil depth, saturated water content, and shear strength. Arithmetically averaging the effectiveness of both analyses found slope angle, soil depth, saturated water content, and shear strength as the top four factors. The sum of their effectiveness was ~70%.

  • In this paper, a design method based on evolutionary programming for feedforward neural networks which have a single hidden layer is presented. By using an evolutionary programming, the network parameters such as the network structure, weight, slope of sigmoid functions and bias of nodes can be acquired simultaneously. To check the effectiveness of the suggested method, two numerical examples are examined. The performance of the identified network is demonstrated.

  • Failure of the cut slope is triggered by combination of internal and extemal failure factors. Internal failure factors are related to geological and geometrical conditions of slope itself, and natural and/or artificial loadings on slope can be the external failure factors. Influences of these failure factors show different intensity according to the ground condition and are controlled by behavior characters of the slope. In this study, the soil depth ratio(SR), block size ratio(BR) and rock strength are used as the criteria to divide ground condition based on behavior characteristics. Ground condition of the slope is divided into discontinuous jointed rock mass and continuos soil-like mass, highly fractured rock mass and massive rock mass by the criteria(SR and BR). The SFi-system is a rating system to determine the slope failure index(SFi) by analyzing internal and external factors based on classification of the ground condition. The results of the SFi-system application to the real cut slopes show close relationship between the SFi value and potential or dimension of the failure. Therefore, the SFi-system can be used as a useful tool to predict and analyze the characteristic of the slope failure.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to develop a goal setting method for increasing the probability of a holed in a side inclined putting stroke. Method: Three-dimensional video data was recorded at a frequency of 120 hz per second after synchronizing 19 infrared motion capture systems (Qualisys, Gothenburg, Sweden). Putting green used a polycarbonate plate ($1.2{\times}2.4{\times}0.01meter$) with coefficient of friction (${\mu}=0.062$) and a real curve of the actual hole. Results: The velocity ratio between the club and the ball was 1:1.6 under various ball speed conditions in this study. The overall position of the break is 1 m to 1.4 m from the point where the ball leaves. If there is a slope, the ball follows the target line by the straightening force, and when it reaches 1 m position, the straightening force decreases by 30~50% and reaches to the deviation (break) point which is severely influenced by the slope. From here, the ball is aimed in a direction other than the target, and the size is affected by the slope. Conclusion: If there is a side slope, the ball moves away from the straight line, and the larger the slope, the closer the break point is to the starting point of the ball. Therefore, it is necessary to calculate the degree of departure according to the slope carefully, and it is preferable that the slower the speed is, the more the influence of the slope becomes. It is preferable to use the center of the hole as a reference when calculating the departure.

  • This paper presents a new approach of risk evaluation method for the reinforced slopes. In order to perform this study, the existing stability and risk evaluation methods are reviewed and analysed in terms of rainfall, ground condition, and drain conditions. According to the characteristic of the reinforced slopes improved by internal and external reinforcement, the nineteen influence factors are determined in order to develop new risk analysis model based on 'Interaction matrix' approach suggested by Hudson (1991). Using new approach of slope risk analysis model, the weighting values for interaction factors are analysed and determined. Based on new slope risk evaluation approach, the slope risk index, namely SRI (Slope Risk Index) is developed in this study to apply the evaluation of the reinforced slopes. In order to verify the SRI, a total of 15 cases are studied and analysed. The analysed results are compared and evaluated. According to the results, it is deduced that new slope risk evaluation method (SRI approach) IS very useful and practically a reliable method to evaluate the existing slopes.

  • This study investigated the dynamic instability of a ceramic-on-ceramic artificial hip joint system through complex eigenvalue analysis. We examined the mode-coupling mechanism through eigenvalue sensitivity analysis with the variation of system parameters. In addition, we constructed a finite element model including the negative slope of friction curve for investigating the negative-slope mechanism in the hip squeak problem. The numerical results show that the torsion-dominant mode becomes unstable due to the presence of the negative slope while the axial load is the important factor influencing the negative-slope type instability.

  • After heavy rainfall, It was occurred massive plane failure along bedding plane of shale in the center of rock slope. It was observed filling material and trace of underground water leakage around of the slope. We tried to find the cause for slope failure, and the result of examination showed that primary factors of the failure were low shear strength of clay filling material and water pressure formed within tension crack existed in the top of the slope. In this research, in order to examine the features of shear strength of filled rock joint, shear test of filled rock joint was conducted using of artificial filling material such as sand and clay..Also we made an investigation into the characteristics of shear strength with different thickness of filling materials.
