The purpose of this study was to evaluate the artificial dental plaque by Streptococcus mutans on 4 different implant surfaces. In this study, the specimens were divided into 4 groups according to implant surface treatment. Uncoated implant group(n=5) which has an uncoated, smooth surfaced implant(Osstem, Korea), SLA implant group(n=5) which has an sandblasted large grit and acid-etched surface implant(Bicon, USA). Oxidized implant group(n=5) which has an oxidized surfaced implant (Osstem, Korea), and RBM implant group(n=5) which has resorbable blasting media(RBM) surfaced implant(Osstem, Korea). Acquired pellicle by human saliva and dental plaque by Streptococcus mutans were made on each implant surface. To analyze the plaque condition on implants surfaces, cell count and optical density were taken as a microbiologic method, and SEM(Scanning Electronic Microscope) findings was also taken for evaluation of surface condition. The following results were obtained. 1. Cell counting results of artificial dental plaque were Uncoated group($658.0{\pm}102.0$), RBM group($878.0{\pm}170.0$), SLA group ($946.0{\pm}42.0$), Oxidized group($992.0{\pm}40.0$), and there was difference between Oxidized group and Uncoated implant group(p<0.05). In case of modified cell counting results by v/w% were RBM group($197.8{\pm}45.2$), Oxidized group($207.04{\pm}8.34$), Uncoated group($261.6{\pm}40.6$), SLA group($315.4{\pm}14.0$), and there was difference between RBM group and SLA group(p<0.05). 2. Optical density results of artificial dental plaque after ultrasonic treatment was that there was difference among groups, and optical density of RBM group was higher than that of Uncoated group(p<0.05). In case of modified optical density results by v/w%, there was difference among groups, and the modified optical density of Uncoated group and SLA group was higher than those of Oxidized group and RBM group(P>0.05). 3. SEM findings of artificial dental plaque on the surfaces of implant as follows; there were artificial dental plaque on the surfaces of all test implants. Streptococcus mutans and by-product were observed at 10,000 times magnified condition on all test implants. Adhesion area of artificial dental plaque was about 1/2 of total surface after 24 hours incubate at $37^{\circ}C$. These results showed that there were differences among implant surfaces on the growth of Streptococcus mutans, and bacteria and by-product were covered about 1/2 area of total implant surfaces at 24 hours incubate at $37^{\circ}C$.
This study was to evaluate the change of mineral loss of fTCP and CPP-ACP in artificial caries lesions using QLF-D to compare the remineralization effect of recently developed fTCP and CPP-ACP, which is widely used as a remineralization cream in current dental clinics. Bovine specimens used in this study formed the artificial caries lesion immersing in demineralization solution for 10 days and were divided randomly into the following two groups; Group 1- Tooth Mousse containing 10% CPP-ACP, Group 2- Clinpro Tooth Creme containing 950ppm NaF and fTCP. Two tooth paste were applied to the artificial caries lesion of specimens and they were immersed in artificial saliva for 1 week. Mineral loss of artificial caries lesion was evaluated by fluorescence loss (${\Delta}F$) values using QLF-D. QLF-D analysis showed that the ${\Delta}F$ and ${\Delta}Fmax$ value increased 2.65 and 6.63, respectively, in the Tooth Mousse group, and the mineral loss decreased statistically significantly(p<0.05). However, Clinpro Tooth Creme group had no statistically significant difference. ${\Delta}Fmax$ value of Tooth Mousse group was statistically significant difference compared to the Clinpro Tooth Creme. Therefore, the Tooth Mousse containing 10% CPP-ACP is more effective than Clinpro Tooth Creme containing fTCP in the treatment of remineralization of artificial caries lesions.

PURPOSE. The aim was to evaluate the effect of four acidic beverages on the roughness (Ra) and color change (ΔEab) of two brands of artificial teeth and a heat-polymerized acrylic resin (HPAR) for use in a prosthetic base. MATERIALS AND METHODS. All materials were divided into 5 groups, according to the used acidic beverage (artificial saliva - control, red wine, orange juice, coke-based, and lemon juice-based soft drink). The immersion process was divided into two stages: T1 - immersion in the acidic solutions for 10 minutes for 14 days; T2 - after T1, the samples were immersed in grape juice for 14 days. The Ra of the samples was evaluated in a rugosimeter and the ΔEab in a spectrophotometer, before and after the immersions. The analysis of variance of one (ΔEab) and two factors (Ra) and Tukey were performed (α=.05). RESULTS. There was a statistical difference for roughness after immersion (T1) for Trilux and Tritone teeth, regardless of the acid solution. For Trilux teeth, all acid solutions increased Ra (P<.05). For Tritone teeth, only the coke-based soft drink did not statistically change Ra. Grape juice (T2) altered Ra only of artificial teeth (P<.05). The color was changed for all materials, after T1 and T2. CONCLUSION. In general, the acidic solutions changed the Ra and ΔEab of HPAR and artificial teeth after T1. The grape juice altered the roughness only of the artificial teeth, promoting a clinically acceptable color change in the materials.
The Purpose of this study was fourfold - to evaluate the general laws of friction applied to orthodontic conditions, to compare archwire materials under these controlled conditions, to compare ligation method, and to measure the effect of the artificial saliva on friction with these materials Three wire alloys (Cobalt-chromium, Nickel-titanium, Beta-titanium) in two size wires (.016" , .016" ${\times}$.022" ) were examined respect to the bracket (.018" ${\times}$.025" standard), and two ligature material (stainless steel, elastomeric) in dry and wet conditions The results were as follows, 1. The order of frictional force against alloy materials was Co-Cr (lowest), Ni-Ti, and ${\beta}$-Ti(highest) - with the exception of elastomeric ligation under wet conditions. 2. S.S. ligation gave rise to significantly greater friction than elastomeric ligation did. 3. Testing in the presence of saliva, rather than in dry conditions, decreased the frictional force for S.S. ligation with .016" Co-Cr, Ni-Ti, ${\beta}$-Ti. but, increased the frictional force for S.S. ligation with .016" ${\times}$ .022" Co-Cr, Ni-Ti, ${\beta}$-Ti. 4. .016" ${\times}$.022 " wire generated more friction than .016" wire.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of porcelain re-firing on the formation of surface bubble and on the change in shade of metal-ceramic crown exposed to artificial saliva. Materials and methods: Thirty disk-shaped specimens were made in 10 mm diameter with 0.5 mm metal core thickness and 1 mm ceramic thickness. A spectroradiometer was used to determine the CIE Lab coordinates. The number and size of surface bubble were observed with a stereomicroscope. After the exposure to artificial saliva for 7 days, re-firing was performed at glazing temperature. After re-firing, the CIE Lab were calculated, and the number and size of surface bubble were observed again. The change in shade was expressed with ${\Delta}E$. Statistical analysis was done with paired t-test for the change in the number of surface bubble and student t-test for the change in the size of surface bubble (${\alpha$}=0.05). Results: Shade difference was calculated 2.14 ${\Delta}E$ units. The mean number of surface bubble was $1.33{\pm}1.49$ before re-firing, $3.27{\pm}2.90$ after re-firing. After re-firing, the number of surface bubble was significantly increased (P<.05). The mean size of surface bubble was $81.97{\pm}32.03\;{\mu}m$ before re-firing, $142.94{\pm}47.40\;{\mu}m$ after re-firing. After re-firing, the size of surface bubble was significantly increased (P<.05). Conclusion: Shade change after re-firing was perceptible (${\Delta}E$ < 2.0) and clinically acceptable (${\Delta}E$ < 3.7). The number and size of surface bubble was significantly increased after re-firing. Further investigation to decrease the surface bubble on the extra oral repair of metal-ceramic crown, will be needed in future study.

This study aimed to compare the color stability and surface roughness of three-dimensional (3D) printing resin according to polishing methods. 3D-printed resin specimens were fabricated at TC-80DP (Graphy, Seoul, Korea) with a stereolithography 3D printer, and the specimens were divided into three groups, each of which was not polished, was polished using Enhance®, and was polished using a Sof-LexTM disc. The CIE L*a*b* value and the surface roughness of each group were measured and immersed in artificial saliva and orange juice after 0, 1, 7, 30, and 60 days, and the color difference (ΔE*) was calculated. As a result of the study, no noticeable color change was observed in artificial saliva, but a noticeable color change was demonstrated in orange juice after 60 days of immersion, and the difference was significant. In the Sof-LexTM group, surface roughness according to the solution was found to be significantly higher in the orange juice than that in artificial saliva. No significant difference in color change was found according to the polishing method, but surface roughness was significantly lower in the Sof-LexTM group than both that of the unpolished group and that of the Enhance® group. Nevertheless, all groups exhibited clinically acceptable properties regardless of their higher surface roughness than the threshold for plaque accumulation. Overall, this study recommends utilizing Sof-LexTM for polishing 3D printing resin when used in primary anterior tooth coverage.

An in vitro study on cariogenic potential of 8 over-the-counter syrups for children was performed. The experimental groups were 8 over-the-counter syrups. The positive control group was 10% sucrose solution, and the negative control group was artificial saliva. The pH of each group was determined. The buffering capacity was measured by the volume of 2 N NaOH adding to equalize the pH of 20 ml of experimental solution to pH 7. The consistency was measured by the time to pass Ostwald pipette for 2 ml of the experimental solution. The experimental solutions were inoculated with S. mutans and cultured in $37^{\circ}C$ anaerobic condition for 48 hours. To estimate acid production, pH of the experimental solutions were measured before and after the culture. The primary teeth specimens were soaked in the experimental solutions for 20 minutes three times a day. Except on those hours the specimens were stored in artificial saliva. After 5 days, the microhardness changes of the specimens were measured. These results show that most of syrup-form medicines for children tend to have cariogenic potential partially in endogenous pH, buffering capacity, consistency, acid production and erosive ability of enamel. For the oral health of children, the alternative sweeteners (ex. xylitol) may be substituted for the cariogenic sweeteners of syrups. Additionally, It may be helpful that the chewable tablet replace liquid or syrup in term of dose form.

Topical fluoride application for children is a widely performed procedure in the field of Pediatric Dentistry for its dental caries prevention effects However, it is recently recognized as having some unwanted effects on several esthetic restorative materials, the author immersed glass ionomer cement, compomer and composite resin specimens in APF gel and measured the surface roughness and also, examined the specimens under the scanning eletron microscope. The followings are the results: 1. In the specimens of glass ionomer cement and compomer, APF gel 4 minute immersion group and pH cycling group show statistically significant increased surface roughness than artificial saliva immersion group (p<0.01). 2. There was no statistically significant surface roughness for composite resin in all group (p>0.05). 3. When the specimens were examined under scanning electron microscope, the surface change were in the order of glass ionomer cement, compomer, composite resin and also in the order of pH cycling group, APF gel 4 minutes immersion group, artificial saliva immersion group.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the change of mechanical properties, surface topography and frictional force of various nickel titanium wires after recycling. Three types of nickel-titanium wires and one type of stainless steel wire were divided to three groups: as-received condition(T0:control group), treated in artificial saliva for four weeks(T1) and autoclaved after being treated in artificial saliva(T2). Some changes were observed for the selected mechanical properties in tensile test, surface topography by means of SEM and 3D profilogram, and frictional coefficient. The findings suggest that: 1. Nickel-titanium wires demonstrated no statistically significant differences in maximum tensile strength, elongation rate and modulus of elasticity, but stainless steel wire demonstrated statistically significant differences in maximum tensile strength, elongation rate and modulus of elasticity between the groups(p<0.05). 2. NiTi, Optimalloy, Stainless Steel wires demonstrated increased pitting and corrosion in SEM finding. 3. Recycled NiTi, Optimalloy and stainless steel wires demonstrated significantly greater surface roughness(Ra and Rq) through 3D profilogram when compared with the control wires(p<0.05), but Sentalloy didn't demonstrate significant difference. 4. Recycled NiTi, Optimalloy and stainless steel wires demonstrated significantly greater maximum frictional coefficient when compared with the control wires(p<0.05), but Sentalloy didn't demonstrate significant difference The changes of surface roughness and frictional coefficient in NiTi and Optimalloy had no clinical implication. Consequently recycled nickel titanium wires demonstrated no clinical problem in tensile properties, surface topography and frictional coefficient.
In the orthopedic field which firstly used zirconia as artificial joints, researchers had studied the reasons for collapsing zirconia used as restorative material by accumulated inner cracks in several years and they found out Low Temperature Degradation is one of the reasons. In the dentistry field, it has not been too long since they used zirconia as the cores of all-ceramic restoration; however, the study is needed as prophylactic measure against Low Temperature Degradation which can be caused by saliva wetting the mouth all the time and frictional forces such as bite pressure and masticatory pressure. Artificial aging by autoclaving is used because there are difficulties of testing in the patient's mouth. To study the changes in the material properties, the flexural strength of dental zirconia ceramic is measured before and after the test. The following are the result of the test. 1) The zirconia blocks in the autoclaves at $130^{\circ}C$ and $200^{\circ}C$ are phase-shifted tetragonal to monoclinic by Low Temperature Degradation. 2)The non-autoclaved specimens have the average fractural strength of 1346.4MPa, the specimens autoclaved at $130^{\circ}C$ have 1226.4Mpa and the specimens autoclaved at $200^{\circ}C$ have 1024.1MPa. The tests show that as the temperature increases, the flexural strength tend to decrease and the differences are noticeable(p<0.001). 3)Through the Duncan's post-hoc test, the differences in flexural strength of the 3 groups were listed in order of strength like normal temperature>at $130^{\circ}C$ autoclave low temperature degradation> at $200^{\circ}C$ autoclave low temperature degradation.
