  • In this paper, the fundamental features of the arc stability DC arc furnace have been investigated, from the converter point of view. To compare of measurement arc data from DC arc furnace and the advanced arc simulations of magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) and the well known Cassie-Mayr arc model have been extensively used. The MHD based arc simulation has been validated in the subcomponent level, for the free burning arc set up in the laboratory. The arc simulation predicted the arc voltage for different currents with the accuracy which satisfies engineering requirements. It has been shown that the arc current steepness at current zero determines the arc stability, and the associated peak arc resistance can be used as its quantitative measure. Based on the presented insight into the DC arc stability, a converter topology solution which realizes an optimal arc stability has been proposed. The main results presented in this paper provide a design guideline for the future DC arc furnace converter topology developments.

  • This paper treats A.C. arc movement in a transverse A.C. magnetic field at atmospheric pressure with the purpose of selecting electrode materials and obtaining detailed data for design of A.C. air circuit breaker, plasma accelerator and plasma jet. Arc velocities in transverse magnetic field are measured by varying arc current, arc voltage, gap length, magnetic flux density and the erosion of electrode surface, which influence arc velocities. The main results are; 1)Arc velocities in transverse magnetic field have different values according to electrodes of various materials and decrease in a descending order of cold cathode, medium cathode and hot cathode. 2)Arc velocities in transverse magnetic field increases with arc current, arc voltage, gap length and magnetic flux densith and on the other hand decrease with the increase of electrode surface erosion. 3)D.C.arc velocity in D.C. magnetic field is higher than A.C. arc velocity in A.C. magnetic field of the same value.

  • The flux cored arc welding (FCAW) process is one of the most frequently employed and important welding process due to high productivity and excellent workability. The process is performed either as an automated process or as a semi-automatic process. In FCAW process, welding voltage has been considered as a qualitative indication of arc length. But it is necessary to let welding operators know, maintain and manage the arc length directly by estimating and displaying it. In this study, to develop arc length estimation technique, we measured a welding circuit resistance($R_sc$) and then we calculated welding circuit voltage drop($V_sc$). Also, we measured arc peak voltage($V_ap$). By subtracting $V_sc$ from $V_arc$, we can easily calculate net arc voltage drop($V_arc$). Consequently, we suggested arc length estimating equation and basic algorithm by regressive analyzing the relationship between net arc voltage drop($V_arc$) and real arc length(Larc) measured by high speed camera. Therefore, arc length can be predicted by just monitoring welding current and voltage.

  • This paper presents investigation of an arc force sensor for a robotic welding control system. Arc force sensor is employed in this research to monitor the bead geometry of the arc welding process. Arc force sensor mounted at the end of the robot wrist was employed to measure the arc force applied to the weld. Experimental configuration for measurement of arc force was used to quantify the changes in the arc force distributions of the plate being welded. A relationship between the bead dimension and the arc force distributions was established. The sensor information was used to establish a relationship between welding current and arc force. Arc force sensor have shown to be one of the most sophisticated technique to monitor perturbations that occurred during robotic arc welding process.

  • The design of industrial arc plasma systems is still largely based on trial and error although the situation is rapidly improving because of the available computational power at a cost which is still fast coming down. The desire to predict the behavior of arc plasma system, thus reducing the development cost, has been the motivation of arc research. To interrupt fault current, the most enormous duty of a circuit breaker, is achieved by separating two contacts in a interruption medium, $SF_{6}$ gas or air etc., and arc plasma is inevitably established between the contacts. The arc must be controlled and interrupted at an appropriate current zero. In order to analyze arc behavior in $SF_{6}$ gas circuit breakers, a numerical calculation method combined with flow field and electromagnetic field has been developed. The method has been applied to model arc generated in the Aachen nozzle and compared the results with the experimental results. Next, we have simulated the unsteady flow characteristics to be induced by arcing of AC cycle, and conformed that the method can predict arc behavior in account of thermal transport to $SF_{6}$ gas around the arc, such as increase of arc voltage near current zero and dependency of arc radius on arc current to maintain constant arc current density.

  • In arc spot welding process, the arc is not moving and heat input is concentrated in one spot so that the heat input efficiency of arc is higher than that of GMAW. In other words, the heat input efficiency of arc change during weld time because arc start is done in spot and weld metal is filled. Therefore, the heat input model of arc spot welding should be different from that of general GMAW. In present study, the calculating model of heat input efficiency in arc spot welding was suggested by temperature monitoring near spot in arc spot welding of copper plate. The result showed that the heat input efficiency of arc was changed three times during weld time. The accuracy of calculating method of heat input efficiency was verified by heat transfer analysis of arc spot welding process using finite element method.

  • The application of a feedback control system in robotic arc welding is becoming more and more demanding than ever before. This requirement arises from the fact that robotic arc welding process needs no manual operator to monitor and manipulate the process parameters and hence a means of controlling the quality of the robotic arc welding process becomes apparent. Arc force sensor employed in this research to monitor the bead geometry of the arc welding process, A relationship between the bead dimension and the arc force distributions was established. Experimental configuration for measurement of arc force was used to quantify the changes in the arc force distributions of the plate being welded. Arc force sensor mounted at the end of the robot wrist was employed to measure the arc force applied to the weld. The sensor information was the used to establish a relationship between welding current and arc force. Arc force sensor have shown to be on of the most sophisticated technique to monitor perturbations that occurred during arc welding process.

  • In this paper, we formulate a new local move on virtual knot diagram, called arc shift move. Further, we extend it to another local move called region arc shift defined on a region of a virtual knot diagram. We establish that these arc shift and region arc shift moves are unknotting operations by showing that any virtual knot diagram can be turned into trivial knot using arc shift (region arc shift) moves. Based upon the arc shift move and region arc shift move, we define two virtual knot invariants, arc shift number and region arc shift number respectively.

  • Fundamental features of the arc stability in DC arc furnace of 720V/100kA/72MW have been investigated. Cassie-Mayr arc model has been employed and applied for the target dc arc furnace. In order to characterize the parameters of Cassie-Mayr arc model and the behavior of unstable arc dynamics, the advanced arc simulations of magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) has been performed. The MHD based arc simulation has been validated in the subcomponent level, for the free burning arc set up in the laboratory. From the results of MHD simulation, dc arc dynamic resistance is proposed to be an effective arc stability function reflecting the instability of dynamic arc behavior. The experimental result confirms the usefulness of proposed dynamic arc resistance as arc stability function. The proposed arc stability function can be regarded as an effective criterion for the overall power conversion system to maintain highly stable arcing operation leading to better productivity and reliability.

  • In this paper arc behavior in spiral type vacuum interrupter(VI) was analyzed by means of arc images, arc voltages and finite element method(FEM). As a result of experiment, the difference of arc voltage was observed under different twisting angles. It was found that the reason of the difference was the difference of arc resistance from simultaneous analysis of arc images and arc voltages. and the difference of arc resistance was explained by Lorentz force calculation with FEM. And the results of calculation were sufficient to explain the experimental results.
