  • Surface modification of meta-aramid fibers was performed by phosphoric acid treatment. Surface morphology and element composition of untreated and treated fibers were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Effects of surface modification on the mechanical strength of aramid papers made from meta-aramid fibers and fibrid were investigated. Surface modification conditions were optimized by response surface analysis (RSA). Results show that phosphoric acid treatment increases the surface roughness and oxygen content of aramid fibers. They improve the interface bonding strength between aramid fibers and fibrid, which improves the tensile strength of aramid papers. The results of response surface analysis indicate that the tensile strength of aramid papers increases by 47.5% and reaches the maximum when meta-aramid fibers are treated with 21.1wt% phosphoric acid solution at $39.3^{\circ}C$ for 36.7 min.

  • Fibrids are materials of a complex fibrous, film-like, or intermediate form. The diameter of the particles varies between $20-50{\mu}m$, and $100-10,000{\mu}m$. The optimal form and size of the particles depends in each case on the area of application. The fibrid form is the result of two processes, viz. a wave process and diffusion. The life span and break-up pattern of the polymer depend on the interphase surface tension, the viscosity of the polymer, and the diffusion speed ratio of the polymer and medium. In this study, m-aramid was polymerized at low temperature and in solution with an equal molar ratio of MPD and IPC in DMAc. The meta-aramid solution was prepared by dissolution in DMAc, and ethanol was used as a coagulation bath. The rotation speed was the main factor affecting the formation and morphology of the fibrid. Meta-aramid paper was produced from m-aramid fiber with meta-aramid fibrid by wet laying. The results showed that fibrid particle sizes decreased with increasing rotation speeds and decreasing concentrations of m-aramid in the solution. The properties of the m-aramid fibrid as a function of the processing conditions were investigated using an image analyzer, optical microscopy, and SEM. The resulting meta-aramid paper was analyzed in terms of its morphology, thickness, air permeability, and mechanical properties.

  • The $SF_{6}$ gas insulated power equipments have the insulation systems which are composed of $SF_{6}$ gas and insulation paper. It is repored that their insulation abilities are influenced by the $SF_{6}$ gas gaps in those insulation systems and gas pressures. This paper describes partial discharge phenomena with $SF_{6}$ gas pressures in insulation system of $SF_{6}$ gas-insulation paper Specimens of $SF_{6}$ gas-insulation paper were prepared and aramid paper was used as insulation paper. Partial discharge inception voltages(PDIV) and breakdown voltages for the existence of $SF_{6}$ gas gaps were measured by short term tests with gas pressures. Also, average PD quantities and pulse counts, life times of each specimens were calculated from the results of long term aging tests with gas pressures. It was found that the $SF_{6}$ gas gaps decrease increasing rates of PDIV and brealdown voltages according to gas pressure increase and the insulation breakdown caused by the smaller PD quantities than 1[pC] at the high gas pressure of 300kPa is due to the increase of energy density with increase of gas pressure.

  • This paper describes partial discharge phenomenon with SF6gas pressures in insulation consisting of insulation paper and SF6 gas. We made the specimens with SF6 gas gaps which exist between aramid papers and electrodes and calculated the electric field intensity in the these gaps. We measured the partial discharge inception voltages and the AC breakdown voltages with the test method of IEC 60060-2 and did the partial discharge degradation experiments with a constant voltage. According to gas pressures, the breakdown voltages in SF6gas gaps were calculated by Paschen's law. And these results showed the ability applying partial discharge inception voltages evaluation to Paschen's law and the relationship between the PD quantities occurring insulation breakdown and PD occurring area.

  • In this paper, we investigated the electric field distribution according to the roughness in aramid insulating paper for electric machine. Aramid insulating paper has been used to electric insulating of the traction motor and generators for large capacity. We studied the electric field distribution using boundary element method for Aramid insulating paper. As a result of simulation, the electric field increased according to the surface roughness existence. Electric field decreased due to radius of surface roughness reduction, and Electric field concentration appeared at electrode boundary and rough surface.

  • In this paper, to developing thermally and mechanically upgraded ones, we dismounted pole transformers used in the fields for over 13 years and conducted aged oil analysis. Also, when the cellulose and aramid papers in test cell were aging with oil at $130^{\circ}C$ for 3000 hours, with the testing period cellulose paper deteriorated more rapidly than the others. For example dielectric strength and dissipation factor of papers deteriorated with aging time. For evaluation of thermal aging characteristics, a mineral oil-immersed transformer was constructed with hybrid insulation system comprised of aramid paper and cellulose insulation. A Hybrid system has economic advantages. Cellulose materials are confined to cooler regions of the transformer winding. And aramid papers are served to insulate contact parts of hot conductors.
