The stability of 80% ethanol-soluble pigments from Monasus purpureus CBS 281.34 was investigated according to storage temperature, pH and addition of organic acid. Also, the stability of ethanol-soluble pigment in aqueous system was examined after the addition of distilled water in the range of 0∼80% during the storage at 1$0^{\circ}C$ and 2$0^{\circ}C$ for 4 weeks with water soluble pigment. The heat stability was the highest (9.74%) when the 80% ethanol-soluble pigments were stored at 1$0^{\circ}C$ for 4 weeks. However, the 80% ethanol-soluble pigments stored at 6$0^{\circ}C$ and 8$0^{\circ}C$ for 24 h and 12 h greatly decreased by 23.06% and 30.36%, respectively. Although the 80% ethanol-soluble pigments were stable in the range of pH 4∼8, the degradation rate of pigment increased at pH 2 and PH 10.80% ethanol extract was adjusted to PH 4 by adding organic acids. The rate of pigment degradation was not different from control for 4 weeks. Red pigment was stable in the treatment of organic acids. And the stability of ethanol-soluble pigment in aqueous system was gradually decreased as the pigment content and storage time increased. Additionally, the stability of ethanol-soluble pigment was higher at 1$0^{\circ}C$ than at 2$0^{\circ}C$.
Melanin synthesis is catalyzed by tyrosinase. To investigate the whitening effect of Hizikia fusiformis, fractions from ethanol extract of H. fusiformis were prepared by a systematic fractionation procedure with solvents such as methanol, hexane, butanol, and $H_2O$. The ethanol extract and its fractions were then subjected to evaluate the inhibitory effects on the tyrosinase activity and melanin synthesis in murine B16F10 melanoma cells. The ethanol extract and aqueous fraction exhibited a whitening effect with no cytotoxicity. The ethanol extract showed the highest whitening effect among the samples. The inhibitory effect of $100{\mu}g/ml$ of ethanol extract was higher than that of $10{\mu}g/ml$ of arbutin, but it was lower than that of $10{\mu}g/ml$ of kojic acid. Furthermore, the inhibitory effects of $100{\mu}g/ml$ of methanol, hexane, butanol, and aqueous fractions were similar to those of $10{\mu}g/ml$ of arbutin. The antioxidant activities were examined by comparing the results with that of ascorbic acid as a positive control. The ethanol extract and aqueous fraction showed relatively higher DPPH radical-scavenging activities compared with the other samples. Furthermore, $500{\mu}g/ml$ of ethanol extract and aqueous fraction diminished LPS-induced iNOS expression to 82 and 80%, respectively. These results suggest that ethanol extract and aqueous fraction of H. fusiformis could be used as cosmetic ingredients for whitening and skin protection effects.
By reducing PVP with $H_2NOH$.HCl and NaOH 2:2:1 mass ratios in aqueous ethanol, poly-N-vinyl pyrrolidone oxime [PVPO] was prepared with 92% yield. Applying the sol-gel concept, orthosilicic acid [OSA] was made by hydrolyzing TEOS with ethanol in 1:0.5 molar ratios using 1 N KOH aqueous solution as a catalyst. The OSA + PVPO + $_L$-Valine ($\alpha$-amino acid) were mixed with pure ethanolic medium in 1:2:2 mass ratios and refluxed at $78^{\circ}C$ and 6 pH for 6.5 h. A white residue of poly-N-vinyl pyrrolidone oximo-L-valyl-siliconate [POVS] appeared after 5 h. The heating of reaction mixture was stopped and the contents were brought to NTP. The residue formation of POVS was intensified with lowering a temperature and completely solidified within 5 h, was filtered using a vacuum pump with Whatmann filter paper no. 42. The residue of POVS was washed several times with 20% aqueous cold ethanolic solution and dried in vacuum chamber at $25^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. The MP was noted above $350^{\circ}C$. Structural and internal morphology were analyzed with IR and $^1H$-NMR, and SEM respectively. A drug loading and transporting ability of the POVS in water and at pH = 5 and 8 was determined chromatographically.
Solutions of $Mn^{++}, Co^{++} and Zn^{++}$ were mixed with various dibasic organic acids in the presence of cation exchange resin at room temperature. The distribution ratios of the metal ions between resin and solution were measured, using radioactive metal ions as tracer. From the observed variation of the distribution ratios with acid anion concentrations, it was concluded that $Mn^{++}, Co^{++}$ and $Zn^{++}$ formed one-to-one complexes with succinate, malonate, o-phthalate and tartrate ions in aqueous, 20 % ethanol-water and 20 % acetone-water solutions. The results of the present investigation indicated that the relative stabilities of the complexes increased in the order: $Mn^{++} < Co^{++} < Zn^{++} complexes, Succinate < malonate < o-phthalate < tartrate complexes, Aqueous < mixed solvent systems.$
Solvolyses of para-substituted phenyl chloroformates in water, $D_2O,\;CH_3OD$, 50% $D_2O-CH_3OD$, and in aqueous binary mixtures of acetone, ethanol, methanol are investigated at 25.0 ℃. Product selectivities are reported for a wide range of ethanol-water and methanol-water solvent compositions. These data are interpreted using the Grunwald-Winstein relationship, Hammett equation, and quantum mechanical model. Grunwald-Winstein plots of the first-order rate constants for phenyl chloroformates with $Y_{Cl}$ (based on 1-adamantyl chloride) show marked dispersions into three separate curves for the three aqueous mixtures with a small m value and a rate maximum for aqueous alcohol solvents. To account for these results, third-order rate constants, $k_{ww},\;k_{aw},\;k_{wa}$, and $k_{aa}$ were calculated from the observed $k_{ww}\;and\;k_{aa}$ values together with $k_{aw}\;and\;k_{wa}$ calculated from the computer fit. The kinetic solvent isotope effects determined in water and methanol are consistent with the proposed mechanism of the general base catalyzed carbonyl addition-elimination for para-substituted phenyl chloroformates solvolyses based on mass law and stoichiometric salvation effect studies. This study has shown that the quantum mechanical model predicts transition state variation correctly for $S_N2\;like\;S_AN$ reaction mechanism of para-substituted phenyl chloroformates.
Solvolyses of phenyl chloroformate in water, D2O, CH3OD, 50% D2O-CH3OD, and in aqueous binary mixtures of acetone, ethanol and methanol are investigated at 25.0 ℃. Product selectivities are reported at 25 ℃ for a wide range of ethanol-water and methanol-water solvent compositions. The Grunwald-Winstein plots of first-order rate constants for phenyl chloroformate with YCl (based on 2-adamantyl chloride) show marked dispersions into three separate lines for the three aqueous mixtures with a small m value (m< 0.2) and a rate maximum for aqueous alcohol solvents. Third-order rate constants, kww, kaw, kwa and kaa were calculated from the observed kww and kaa values together with kaw and kwa calculated from the intercept and slope of the plot of 1/S vs. [alcohol]/[water]. The calculated rate constants, kcalc and mol % of ester agree satisfactorily with those of the observed rate constants, kobs and mol % of ester, supporting the stoichiometric solvation effect analysis. The kinetic solvent isotope effects determined in water and methanol are consistent with the proposed mechanism of the general base catalyzed and/or carbonyl addition for phenyl chloroformate solvolyses based on mass law and stoichiometric solvation effect studies.
The enthalpies of transfer, $\Delta H_t^\theta$, of urea from water to aqueous ethanol, EtOH, propan-1-ol, PrOH, and acetonitrile, MeCN, are reported and analysed in terms of the new solvation theory. The analyses show that the solvation of urea is random in the considered solvent mixtures. It is also found that urea interact more strongly with EtOH or PrOH than water.
Benoxaprofen (2-(4-chlorophenyl)-${\alpha}$ -methyl-5-benzoxazole acetic acid) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that causes acute cutaneous phototoxicity. The ability of benoxaprofen (BXP) and its photoproduct, decarboxybenoxaprofen (DBXP) to photosensitize the decomposition of tryptophan was evaluated in various media such as water, ethanol and aqueous micellar dispersions of surfactants. The weak photosensitization of BXP in water was found to be enhanced in cationic CTAB micelle system, but yielded little difference in anionic SDS micelles. In ethanol solution, BXP was determined to photosensitize the decomposition of tryptophan, but no photosensitization was observed with DBXP. All of these results implicate that the anion radical of BXP may play a major role in the photosensitization in hydrophobic micellar phase, forming superoxide through interaction with oxygen as demonstrated by observation that the photosensitization was inhibited by superoxide dismutase.
The surface of porous alumina membrane was modified with silane coupling agent in order to enhance hydrophobicity. The contact angle of water to the surface-modified alumina membrane was greater than $90^{\circ}$. The surface-modified membrane was tested in vapor permeation for the concentration of aqueous ethanol. With the increase of ethanol concentration in the feed, permeation flux increased due to the greater affinity of ethanol with surface-modified alumina membrane than that of water. The experimental results showed that the permeation rate of surface-modified alumina membrane was 15~1000 times greater than that of polymer membranes.

The exposure of gastric mucosa to ethanol produces acute ulcers mediated by inflammatory processes, hemorrhagic erosions and increase of reactive oxygen species. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of Coptidis Rhizoma(CR) aqueous extracts on hydrochloride (HCl)/ethanol induced gastric ulcer in mice as compared with rebamipide (30 mg/kg) and ranitidine (100 mg/kg). Stomach ulcers were induced by oral ingestion of HCl/ethanol. CR extracts (125, 250 and 500 mg/kg) were orally administered, once a day for 7 continuous days, and 1 hr after last 7th treatment of CR extracts stomach ulcers were induced. Effects of CR extracts on HCl/ethanol-induced gastric ulcer were evaluated based on gross and microscopic observations with anti-oxidant activities. All three different dosages of CR extract significantly decreased HCl/ethanol-induced gastric ulcer compared with the HCl/ethanol control mice. CR extracts also strengthened the antioxidative defense systems - decreased the level of lipid peroxidation but increased the level of catalase, superoxide dismutase and nitrate/nitrite compared with the HCl/ethanol control. The effects of CR extract 500 mg/kg were similar to that of 30 mg/kg rebamipide, and CR extract 250 mg/kg showed similar anti-ulcer effects as compared with ranitidine 100 mg/kg. These results suggest that the gastroprotective effects of CR extracts on mice ulcer models can be attributed to its ameliorating effect on oxidative damages.
