  • We define a skew-symmetric Laplace distribution by a symmetric Laplace distribution and evaluate its coefficient of skewness. And we derive an approximate maximum likelihood estimator(AME) and a moment estimator(MME) of a skewed parameter in a skew-symmetric Laplace distribution, and hence compare simulated mean squared errors of those estimators. We compare asymptotic mean squared errors of two defined estimators of reliability in two independent skew-symmetric distributions.

  • Many articles have considered a hybrid censoring scheme, which is a mixture of Type-I and Type-II censoring schemes. We introduce a double hybrid censoring scheme and derive some approximate maximum likelihood estimators(AMLEs) of the scale parameter for the half logistic distribution under the proposed double hybrid censored samples. The scale parameter is estimated by approximate maximum likelihood estimation method using two different Taylor series expansion types. We also obtain the maximum likelihood estimator(MLE) and the least square estimator(LSE) of the scale parameter under the proposed double hybrid censored samples. We compare the proposed estimators in the sense of the mean squared error. The simulation procedure is repeated 10,000 times for the sample size n = 20(10)40 and various censored samples. The performances of the AMLEs and MLE are very similar in all aspects but the MLE and LSE have not a closed-form expression, some numerical method must be employed.

  • It is known that the maximum likelihood method does not provide explicit estimator for the scale parameter of the Weibull distribution based on Type-II censored samples. In this paper we provide an approximate maximum likelihood estimator (AMLE) of the scale parameter of the Weibull distribution with Type-II censoring. We obtain the asymptotic variance and simulate the values of the bias and the variance of this estimator based on 3000 Monte Carlo runs for n = 10(10)30 and r,s = 0(1)4. We also simulate the absolute biases of the MLE and the proposed AMLE for complete samples. It is found that the absolute bias of the AMLE is smaller than the absolute bias of the MLE.

  • We propose a sequential method to construct approximate confidence limits for the ratio of two independent sequences of binomial variates with unequal sample sizes. Due to the nonexistence of an unbiased estimator for the ratio, we develop the procedure based on a modified maximum likelihood estimator (MLE). We generalize the results of Cho and Govindarajulu (2008) by defining the sample-ratio when sample sizes are not equal. In addition, we investigate the large-sample properties of the proposed estimator and its finite sample behavior through numerical studies, and we make comparisons from the sample information view points.

  • In this paper, we propose the approximate maximum likelihood estimators (AMLE) of the location and the scale parameter of the singly left truncated normal distribution. We compare the proposed estimators with the simpler estimators (SE) in terms of the mean squared error (MSE) through Monte Carlo methods.

  • We derive some approximate maximum likelihood estimators(AMLEs) and maximum likelihood estimator(MLE) of the scale parameter in the half-triangle distribution based on progressively Type-II censored samples. We compare the proposed estimators in the sense of the mean squared error for various censored samples. We also obtain the approximate maximum likelihood estimators of the reliability function using the proposed estimators. We compare the proposed estimators in the sense of the mean squared error.

  • We shall derive the moment of the ratio Y/(X + Y) and the reliability P(X < Y ), and then observe the skewness of the ratio in a bivariate Pareto density function of (X, Y). And we shall consider an approximate MLE of parameters in the bivariate Pareto density function.

  • Assume that $X_1, X_2, \cdots, X_N$ are iid p-dimensional normal random vectors ($p \geq 3$) with unknown covariance matrix. The problem of estimating multivariate normal mean vector in an empirical Bayes situation is considered. Empirical Bayes estimators, obtained by Bayes treatmetn of the covariance matrix, are presented. It is shown that the estimators are minimax, each of which domainates teh maximum likelihood estimator (MLE), when the loss is nonsingular quadratic loss. We also derive approximate credibility region for the mean vector that takes advantage of the fact that the MLE is not the best estimator.

  • A skewed double power function distribution is defined by a double power function distribution. We shall evaluate the coefficient of the skewness of a skewed double power function distribution. We shall obtain an approximate maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) and a moment estimator (MME) of the skew parameter in the skewed double power function distribution, and compare simulated mean squared errors for those estimators. And we shall compare simulated MSEs of two proposed reliability estimators in two independent skewed double power function distributions with different skew parameters.
