  • This paper presented the strength and environmental characteristics of reclaimed-ground filled with controlled low-strength materials (CLSM) made of coal ash, small amounts of cement, and water in a reclamation site and evaluated the possibility of the use of coal ash on reclamation materials for beneficial use. Three-month period of SPT, CPT, environmental effects evaluation etc. were conducted. N values and cone resistances in ground filled with CLSM were greater than or similar to those in dredging sand. In case of land filled with coal ash except cement these values were lower than those in dredging sand. The results of soil and seawater pollution were lower than test criteria without high pH. Also the values of PH test were measured between pH 5.0~9.0, the criteria of industrial water in the Law for the Underground Water of Korea.

  • The range of applications of artificial neural networks(Am) in many branches of geotechnical engineering is growing rapidly. This study was undertaken to develop an analysis model representing ultrasonically enhanced soil flushing by the use of ANN. Input data for the model-development were obtained by laboratory study, and used for training and verification. Analyses involved various ranges of momentum, loaming rate, activation function, hidden layer, and nodes. Results of the analyses were used to obtain the optimum conditions for establishing and verifying the model. The coefficient of correlation between the measured and the predicted data using the developed model was relatively high. It shows potential application of ANN to ultrasonically enhanced soil flushing which is not easy to build up a mathematical model.

  • It is well known that the incidence angle of seismic excitation has an influence on the structural response of buildings, and this effect can be more significant in the case of near-fault signals. However, current seismic codes do not include detailed requirements regarding the direction of application of the seismic action and they have only recently introduced specific provisions about near-fault earthquakes. Thus, engineers have the task of evaluating all the relevant directions or the most critical conditions case by case, in order to avoid underestimating structural demand. To facilitate the identification of the most critical incidence angle, this paper presents a procedure which makes use of a two-degree of freedom model for representing a building. The proposed procedure makes it possible to avoid the extensive computational effort of multiple dynamic analyses with varying angles of incidence of ground motion excitation, which is required if a spatial multi-degree of freedom model is used for representing a building. The procedure is validated through the analysis of two case studies consisting of an eight- and a six-storey reinforced concrete frame building, selected as representative of existing structures located in Italy. A set of 124 near-fault ground motion records oriented along 8 incidence angles, varying from 0 to 180 degrees, with increments of 22.5 degrees, is used to excite the structures. Comparisons between the results obtained with detailed models of the two structures and the proposed procedure are used to show the accuracy of the latter in the prediction of the most critical angle of seismic incidence.

  • Earth reinforcement techniques are used worldwide and offer proven solutions to a wide range of geotechnical engineering problems. Here in this paper, recent developments of three major reinforced soil retaining wall methods in Japan were introduced in order to show how the current situation of this technique in Japan is. And the statistical data for the volume of the use was also shown, such as the total volume of the use, the scales of the structures, layout of the earth reinforcement, fill materials, and foundation conditions. Some of the case histories were also introduced with photographs and figures. And then, as one of recent research activity by the author, the study on the application of X-ray CT for the problem of earth reinforcement method combined with other method such as piling and soil improvement was introduced. In this study, a series of model test for several reinforced ground with geogrids was conducted using a newly developed test apparatus. Then, the behavior in the soil box was scanned after settlement using X-ray CT scanner. Based on these test results, the reinforcing effect by the geogrids and the soil arching effect over the pile heads was discussed precisely and those are done in 3-D with nondestructive condition. Finally, the effectiveness of the use of X-ray CT scanner in geotechnical engineering was promised.

  • A Construction of pipe line foundation and railroad, buildings in a permafrost area requires engineering technology of ground stabilization. In the permafrost area, thermal siphons have been used to stabilize foundation by eliminating the heat of ground to the air. the thermal siphon is a passive heat transfer device that operates by convection through vaporization and condensation. The heat transfer from ground to the air is driven by a temperature difference across the unit. A buried part in ground working as vaporizing function and upper part work as condensing. In this study, buried thermal siphon around the pipe lines laid in the Vladivostok site and measuring temperature variation. It is found that the thermal siphons freezing ground faster and decrease temperature variation in winter season.

  • In this study, Field test was performed using high-quality additions and accelerators to obtain the improvement of the strength on domestic shotcrete and quality test based on EFNARC was performed. In addition, Deterioration test that combined the Freezing-thawing and Carbonation was also performed in order to investigate a long-term durability of high-strength shotcrete. As a result of field test, a promotion ratio of early strength is $90\sim97%$ in case of using alkali-free accelerators. And a compressive strength of shotcrete using Micro-silica fume was $45.2\sim55.8MPa$ and the flexible strength was $5.01\sim6.66MPa$, so a promotion ratio of strength was $37\sim79%$, $17\sim61%$ respectively. It was showed that increment effect of strength by the Micro-silica fume replacement of $7.5\sim10%$ for cement mass was remarkable. It was also realized that application of Micro-silica fume to shotcrete reduced deterioration and improved a long-term durability of shotcrete.

  • Application of Limit State Design in geotechnical engineering has become world-widely popular. While LRFD code in the North America presents geotechnical load and resistance factors, the values of resistance factors proposed by these methods are still unstable with limited application. CPT has been widely used for the pile design and various methods have been proposed to estimate the bearing capacity of piles. In this paper, resistance factors for representative pile design methods based on CPT results are evaluated. Field pile load test and CPT results were collected and analyzed in order to obtain necessary statistical data and resistance factors. Resistance factors of the base, shaft, and total capacity are estimated. From fisrt order second moment (FOSM) analysis, resistance factors of $0.30{\sim}0.55$ are estimated for total load capacity.

  • Although it is important to reflect the accurate information of the ground condition in the tunnel design, the analysis and design are conducted by limited information because it is very difficult to get it practically on considering various geography and geotechnical condition. So construction management of information concept is required to manage immediately on the field condition because it is very time-consuming to establish the countermeasure of underground reinforcement and the pattern change of Bo. Therefore, when construction is on tunnel area, examination of accurate safety and prediction of behavior is performed to overcomes the limit of predicting behavior by using Artificial Neural Network(ANN) in this study. Firstly, the field data was secured. Secondly, suitable structure was made on multi-layer perceptrons among the ANN. Thirdly, learning algorithm-propagated applies to ANN. The data for the learn of field application using ANN was used by considering impact factors, which influenced the behavior of tunnel, and performing credibility analysis. crown displacement, spring displacement, subsurfacement, and rock bolt axial force are predicted at the tunnel construction and on-site application was confirmed by using ANN from analyzing and comparing with measurement value of on-site. In this study, the data from Seoul Highway $\bigcirc\bigcirc$ tunnel section was applied to the ANN Theory, and the analysis on the investigate value and the reasoning for the value associated with field application was performed.

  • Dune sands are poorly graded collapsible soils lacking fines. This experimental study explored the technical feasibility of sustainable invigoration of fine waste materials to improve the geotechnical properties of dune sand. The fine waste considered in this study is fine marble waste. The fine waste powder was mixed with dune sand at different contents (5, 10,15, 20, 25, 50%), where the gradation, void ratio, compaction, and shear strength characteristics were assessed for each fine marble waste -dune sand blend. The geotechnical properties of the dune sand-fine marble waste mix delineated in this study reveal the enhancement in compaction and gradation characteristics of dune sand. According to the results, the binary mixture of dune sand with 20% of fine marble waste gives the highest maximum dry density and results in shear strength improvement. In addition, a numerical study is conducted for the practical application of the binary mix in the field and tested for an isolated shallow foundation. The elemental analysis of the fine marble waste confirms that the material is non-contaminated and can be employed for engineering applications. Furthermore, the numerical study elucidated that the shallow surface replacement of the site with the dune sand mixed with 20% fine marble waste gives optimal performance in terms of stress generation and settlement behavior of an isolated footing. For a sustainable mechanical performance of the fine marble waste mixed sand, an optimum dose of 20% fine marble waste is recommended, and some correlations are proposed. Thus, for improving dune sand's geotechnical characteristics, the addition of fine marble waste to the dune sand is an environment-friendly solution.
