Application of Wavelet Transform for Fault Discriminant of Generator (발전기의 고장 판별을 위한 웨이브릿 변환의 적용)

  • Generators are the most complex and expensive single element in a power system. The generator protection relays should to minimize damage during fault states and must be designed for maximum reliability. A conventional CDR(Current Differential Relaying) technique based on DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform) filter have the disadvantages that the time information can lead to loss in the process of converting the signal from the time domain to the frequency domain. A WT(Wavelet transform) and WT analysis is known that it is possible with the local analysis of the fault and transient signal. In this paper, to overcome the defects in the DFT process, an application of WT for fault detection of generator is presented. This paper describes an selection of mother Wavelet to detect faults of generator. Using collected data from the fault simulation with ATPdraw, we analyzed the several mother Wavelet through the course of MLD(multi-level decomposition) using MATLAB software. Finally, it can be seen that the proposed technique using detail coefficient of Daubechies level 2 which can be fault discriminant of generator.

Application of Tabu Search in Design of Fuzzy Controller for Firing Angle of TCSC Improving Transient Stability (과도 안정도 향상을 위한 TCSC의 점호각 제어용 퍼지제어기의 설계에 Tabu 탐색법의 적용)

  • This paper describes the application of Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) to Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC) which can have significant impact on power system dynamics. The function of the FLC is to control the firing angle of the TCSC. We tuned the scaling factors of the FLC using Tabu Search. The proposed FLC is used for damping the low frequency oscillations caused by disturbances such as the sudden changes of small or large loads or the outages in the generators or transmission lines. To evaluate usefulness of the proposed FLC, we performed the computer simulation fur single-machine infinite system. The response of FLC is compared with that of PD controller optimized using Tabu Search. Simulation results that the FLC shows better control performance than PD controller.

An Application of a Binary PSO Algorithm to the Generator Maintenance Scheduling Problem (이진 PSO 알고리즘의 발전기 보수계획문제 적용)

  • This paper presents a new approach for solving the problem of maintenance scheduling of generating units using a binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO). In this paper, we find the optimal solution of the maintenance scheduling of generating units within a specific time horizon using a binary particle swarm optimization algorithm, which is the discrete version of a conventional particle swarm optimization. It is shown that the BPSO method proposed in this paper is effective in obtaining feasible solutions in the maintenance scheduling of generating unit. IEEE reliability test systems(1996) including 32-generators are selected as a sample system for the application of the proposed algorithm. From the result, we can conclude that the BPSO can find the optimal solution of the maintenance scheduling of the generating unit with the desirable degree of accuracy and computation time, compared to other heuristic search algorithm such as genetic algorithms. It is also envisaged that BPSO can be easily implemented for similar optimizations and scheduling problems in power system problems to obtain better solutions and improve convergence performance.

  • The wind turbine gearbox has the longest downtime among other major turbine components such as blades, generators, and main bearings. Therefore, gearbox manufacturers conduct rig tests to evaluate conformity in terms of design and function. Rig tests, however, have limited similarity compared with atmospheric wind turbine operating conditions. Rig test conditions are thoroughly controlled and maintained by testers and the component certificates of gearboxes issued through the test cannot fulfill wind farm operator's requirements. Hence, certification bodies such as DNV-GL and UL require a mandatory gearbox field test report for type certification. The Korea Energy Agency (KEA) also introduced gearbox field test as a part of the KS type certificate in 2016, although it is optional . In this paper, gearbox field test procedures and requirements are introduced, and the first domestic application case of the test is reported. The field test was conducted with a 1.5 MW wind turbine gearbox located in Jeju as the test object.

  • This study proposes a hybrid marine power system combining dual-fuel generators, a fuel cell, and Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFB). Rigorous verification and validation of the dynamic modelling and integration of the system are conducted. A case study for the application of the hybrid propulsion system to a passenger ship is conducted to examine its time-variant behaviour. A comprehensive model of the reversible and irreversible capacity degradation of the VRFB stack unit is proposed and validated. The capacity retention of the VRFB stack is simulated by being integrated within the hybrid propulsion system. Reversible degradation of the VRFB stack is precisely predicted and rehabilitated based on the predefined operational schedule, while the irreversible portion is retained until the affected components are replaced. Consequently, the advantages of the VRFB system as an on-board ESS are demonstrated through the application of a hybrid propulsion system for liner shipping with fixed routes.

  • Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) adopt the Helically Coiled Once-Through Steam Generators (OTSG) extensively for its compactness and higher heat transfer efficiency. As a heat exchanger between the primary side (reactor coolant system) and the secondary side (feedwater and steam system) of nuclear steam supply system, the inlet/outlet conditions both of shell side and tube side of OTSGs have significant impacts on overall system response. Considering the flexible operation of SMRs and heat application by extracting steam, a simulation tool for accurate prediction of the OTSG dynamic behaviors would be required for optimizing design and control. In this study, the OTSG dynamic simulation model has been developed. Mathematical governing equation has been derived by using moving boundary approach and a simulation module has been developed by using Modelica Language. The developed module has been compared with publicly available experimental results and benchmarked with MARS-KS calculation results. Also, it has been incorporated into the integrated SMR model (i.e., reactor core, primary side, secondary side) and dynamic behaviors with reactivity feedback and heat balancing have been investigated. In both of steady-state and transient conditions, it shows the promising accuracy.

  • In this study, we design the one-chip PWM IC for SMPS (Switching Mode Power Supply) application. We determine the IC spec. and simulated each block of PWM IC (Reference, Error amp., Comparator, Oscillator) with Smart Spice (SILVACO Circuit Simulation Tool). Reference circuits generate constant voltage(5V) in the various of power supply and temperature condition. Error amp. is designed with large DC gain (${\simeq}65dB$), unity frequency (${\simeq}190kHz$) and large PM($75^{\circ}$).Saw tooth generators operate with 20K oscillation frequency (external resistor, capacitor).

  • A triboelectric generator uses the principles of static electrification and electrostatic induction to convert mechanical energy into useful electrical energy. In this work we study a single degree of freedom (SDOF) vibration type triboelectric generator that is initiated by a vibrating source at its base. The system is modeled in Abaqus and the design parameters are systematically explored by their effect on the output. The relationships between the parameters: input force, input frequency, mass, spring stiffness and gap between the plates, are analyzed. Finally, based on initial experiments, and simulation results, a design methodology is formulated. The methodology will provide guidance for application specific design of reliable and effective vibration type triboelectric generators.

  • To improve aerodynamic efficiency of the Smart Un-manned Aerial Vehicle(SUAV), vortex generator was applied along the wing upper surface during SUAV tests. Vortex generator, initially used in TR-S2 configuration to enhance lift characteristic, increased lift coefficient. Meanwhile vortex generator produced excessive drag and eventually reduced lift-to-drag ratio. To examine the effect of vortex generator's height, three different heights of vortex generator were used for various SUAV configuration. Vortex generator of 3mm height used in TR-S4 configuration produced 3.1% increase in maximum lift coefficient and 1.5% reduction in lift-to-drag ratio.

  • Most of the failures of rotating machine are stator coil insulation failures. The insulation diagnostic testing for high voltage motors and generators are only megger test and P. I Test which is applied DC voltage until now. But it was impossible to judge insulation deterioration status of high voltage rotating machinery by above testing. In other words, even though the megger measurement values are fairly high, they used to be failed from time to time. Therefore in order to excute reliable and detailed diagnosis of insulation deterioration for rotating machinery, the tangent delta test, the alternating current test and the partial discharge test shall be applied to the insulation diagnostic testing on site.
