  • Cereal, computer software, wine, small appliances, and fast foods are examples of products that have switched from folding carton to microflute corrugated paperboard. Microflute corrugated paperboards have their unique wonderful packaging characteristics that are driving forces for people to use more and more. Good strength property, excellent shock absorbing ability, and beautiful outer appearance of microflute corrugated paperboards go hand and hand with their environmental advantages. It is known that physical properties of microflute corrugated paperboards depend on not only properties of base paper but corrugator operating conditions. This study was carried out to investigate on the corrugator's optimum operating conditions for making micro flute corrugated paperboards. Lab-scaled micro flute corrugator was installed and run with systematic changes of operation conditions to investigate the effects of operation conditions on physical properties of micro flute corrugated paperboards.

  • With the advancements in the computer graphics sectors, the visual quality of the virtual clothing implemented by using the 3-dimensional digital clothing software system has been much improved during the past decade. Most of the cloth simulation procedures are complicated due to the multitude of parameters involved in the simulation in order to achieve the appearance of the actual textile fabrics or the movement of the actual clothing as close as possible. Bending properties affect the tactile and visual qualities of the textile fabrics along with the shear and tensile properties. In this study, dynamic bending properties, focused on the movement of the textile fabrics including damping ratio and amplitude, were measured by using a dynamic bending test system.

Changes on the Abrasion and Mechanical Properties of Warp Knitted Fabric for Footwear with Softeners and Heat Treatments (유연제 및 열처리에 따른 신발용 경편성물의 마모 및 역학 특성 변화)

  • Knitted fabrics are very popular for their numerous advantages such as greater comfort, attractive garment appearance, better fit on the body, etc. In this study, we investigated the mechanical properties and abrasion property of warp knitted fabrics for footwear which treated with several softeners to improve abrasion resistance. The antistatic softener among the various softeners showed high improvement in abrasion resistance. Among the mechanical properties with treating conditions, WT (tensile energy), G (shear stiffness), B (bending rigidity) increased as treating timeincreased. But the other mechanical properties were little changed with treating concentration.

Neuroprotection of Lithium is Associated with Inhibition of Bax Expression and Caspase 8 Activation

  • Neuroprotective properties of lithium were investigated by using in vivo NMDA excitotoxicity model. The appearance of TUNEL positive cells was prominent within 24 h of NMDA (70 mg/kg, i.p.) injection in the regions of the cortex, hippocampal formation, and thalamus of mouse cerebrum. NMDA treatment resulted in the extensive enhancement of Bax immunoreactivity in the cortical and hippocampal regions. NMDA also increased the immunoreactivity of caspase 8 in the similar regions of the mouse cerebrum. However, the increased immunoreactivity of Bax and caspase 8 were dramatically attenuated by chronic lithium pretreatment (lithium chloride, 300 mg/kg/d, i.p. for $7{\sim}10$ days). At the same time, lithium ion blocked the appearance of TUNEL positive cells, and the morphological assessment indicated an effective neuroprotection by lithium against NMDA excitotoxicity. Although the exact action mechanism of lithium is not straightforward at this time, we propose that the inhibition of Bax and caspase cascade is involved in the neuroprotective action of lithium.

The Reliability and Validity of the Korean version of the Body Shape Questionnaire

  • Objective : There is an increasing number of people are not satisfied with their appearance and shape. Therefore, assessment tools are needed to evaluate the appearance or body shape. This study investigated the reliability and validity of a Korean version of the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ). Methods : Participants completed the BSQ, Body Dysmorphic Disorder Examination-Self Report, Eating Disorder Inventory-2, Beck Depression Inventory, Self-Esteem Scale, State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Results : The Korean version of BSQ presented satisfactory test-retest reliability, internal consistency and validity. Exploratory factor analysis yielded four factors as follow: feeling fat, shame and inferiority about one's body shape, attitudes concerning body image perception, and purging behavior. Conclusion : These results show the Korean BSQ exhibits good psychometric properties and can accurately evaluate the body shape concerns among Korean adults.

  • Routine urinalysis is a simple, economical, and useful test that facilitates the detection of urinary system diseases and monitoring of renal disease progression. It consists of 4 parts of specimen evaluation, gross examination, a dipstick urinalysis, and a sediment microscopic urinalysis. Urine specimens should first be evaluated in terms of acceptability, and thereafter, the gross appearance is examined for color, turbidity, and odor. In particular, a dipstick urinalysis is an easy and rapid test that provides information on the multiple physicochemical properties of the urine sample. Moreover, although a sediment microscopic urinalysis is time-consuming, it provides information on the cells, microorganisms, casts, and crystals. In the present report, the clinical significance of the routine urinalysis and the problems concerning interpretation are summarized.

A Study on Comparing Evaluation of External Appearance between Real and 3D Simulation of Flared Skirt Focused on Flare Volume and Length

  • This study compared the flared skirts on 3D simulation and in real to show diverse forms in women's clothing depending on the body's gait and motion. By finding the problems, we suggested the possible methods for utilizing the 3D simulation in the clothing industry. First, the 3D simulation of flared skirts showed similar forms of appearance according to the flare length and volume. However, virtually formed drape shape was even in size and spacing, whereas it was not even in real. Second, according to the results of appearance test on the length and flare volume at $90^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$, both real and 3D simulation skirts were evaluated to have outstanding appearances regardless of the skirt length. However, as the flares volume increased, the skirts with longer length were evaluated to have superior appearances compared to the skirts of shorter length. Third, it showed higher resemblance between the real and virtual simulation, when the skirt had less flare and as the skirt length shortened. However, it showed greater difference between the real and virtual simulation when flare volume and length increased. The length and volume of the skirt and the physical properties of the material are predicted to be different between the real and virtual simulation. However, they usually are similar in forms, so it is believed possible to use for predicting the design's silhouette or the feel when it is worn. This method can be applied on internet shopping malls, which can possibly reduce unnecessary time and expenses.

The Appearance of the Ready-to-wear Clothing in the West and Its Utopian Characteristics (서양 기성복의 출현 배경과 그 유토피아적 성격)

  • This paper discusses the social changes in the late 19th century that provided a historical background in the appearance of the ready-to-wear clothing in the West. It examines the social meanings of the appearance of the ready-to-wear clothing at the time and traces the origins of these social characteristics to the book published in the $16^{th}$ century by Thomas More, Utopia. The results of this study can be summarized as the following. First, the appearance and expansion of the ready-to-wear clothing coincided with the social transition from a class-based society to a democratic society in the west in the $19^{th}$ century. Second, uniforms were produced in the $18^{th}$ century Europe in order to distinguish different classes and ethnic groups, with the military uniforms being the most visible example. Frequent military campaigns in Europe resulted in the increasing demand and expansion of military uniforms, which later became the basis of the standardization of the men's clothing with uniforms. Third, the women's ready-to-wear clothing appeared later than their male counterpart and was made possible by the simplification of design, an important characteristic of women's wear in the later period. Fourth, the social characteristics of the ready-to-wear clothing can be traced to a democratic and egalitarian society without personal properties that was depicted in the book of Utopia by Thomas More. Fifth, one of the characteristics of the ready-to-wear clothing can be found in the description of Utopia, in which everyone in Utopia wears a clothing of the same form for life.

Optimization of the Preparation of Rice Snack by Response Surface Methodology (반응표면분석법을 이용한 쌀과자의 제조 최적화)

  • This study aimed at the optimization and development of rice snack by response surface methodology (RSM). The effect of rice soaking time and additional ratio of soybean milk on physicochemical properties and sensory evaluation of dried rice flour for non-fried snack was studied. After soaking for 0 to 12 days, Baekjinju rice was milled and then air-dried. A quadratic model was selected for weight, volume, hardness, taste and appearance. Two-factor interaction model was selected for expansibility, color and overall preference. A linear model was selected for yellowness and flavor. Weight, hardness and appearance were increased and decreased thereafter as rice soaking time increased, but the volume was reversed. Expansibility, color, taste and flavor were decreased as rice soaking time increased, but yellowness was reversed. Weight and overall preference decreased as additional ratio of soybean milk increased, but volume, expansibility and yellowness were reversed. Hardness, taste and appearance were increased after initial decrease as additional ratio of soybean milk increased, color and flavor were not changed by additional ratio of soybean milk. The optimum conditions of each factor were set to where the rice soaking time and additional ratio of soybean milk were at their minimum. Weight, volume, expansibility, yellowness, hardness, color, taste, flavor, appearance and overall preference were established at maximum level where the objective of the optimum was in level. Our data indicated the statistically predicted values of the highest desirability was 1.24 day of rice soaking time and 15.80% of additional ratio of soybean milk.

A Study on The Physical Properties of Textile Materials( I ) -Effect of Blend Ratio of Wool/Polyester Fabrics on the Change of Physical Properties- (의복재료의 물리적 특성에 관한 연구(I) -Wool/polyester 혼방직물의 혼방률에 따른 물성변화-)

  • To determine the change of the mechanical properties of the wool/polyester blend fabrics in proportion to blend ratio, 10 mechanical properties were measured on 6 blend fabrics by KES-F system. Blend ratio on the 6 blend fabrics was increased by $20\%$, and the structure of the fabric were plain, 2/2 twill, respectively. And wearing performances in propoetion to blend ratio on the 6 blend fabrics were investigated. In this experiment. the following conclusions were obtained with the increase of blend ratio of polyester. 1) The values of WT, RT in tensile properties. tensile energy and elongation, and RC in compressional properties were decreased. 2) The values of B, 2HB in bending properties, 2HG. 2HG 5 in shearing properties were increased. 3) Putting on clothes, wearing performance was bad because crumbling of shape and wrinkle were easily made an appearance. Particularly it was remarkably bad as blend ratio of polyester was expressed $60\%$.
