Monoterpenes, in special limonene and its derivatives, are well studied in the literature due to their several properties. They are well recognized as major components of essential oils; some of them, are important industry residues, and others present some important biological activities. In this review, the biotransformation of the inexpensive limonene into flavor compounds was briefly reviewed and the main pathways for limonene biotransformation are presented. Furthermore, some important biological properties of these compounds were also considered, like bactericidal activity, induction of immune response, and role in disease prevention, with a little emphasis on some possibilities related to the mechanisms of anticancer action.
This study aims to summarize and make a reference of Sagunjatang and Samultang by investigating and comparing the effects of prescriptions. In this process, this review surveyed all papers used Sagunjatang and Samultang in PubMed database and finally 36 papers were included. The publication year, the nations of authors, the type of materials, the formation of experiments, the type of herbal medicine, and their action and mechanisms were analyzed. The number of studies on Sagjunjatang and Samultang has increased since 1990's. The main formation of experiments was in vivo study and the portion was 55%. The proportion of the research using prescriptions was 71%. Sagunjatang was investigated in the field of GI track function, anticancer effect, radioprotective effect and etc. Samultang was studied in the field of anticancer effect, brain cognitive function, anti-inflammatory effect, cell protective effect, and etc. Based on these results, Sagunjatang and Samultang showed the different bioactivities. This study will provide the useful information on differentiation and analysis of the effect of herbal prescriptions by the theory of Korean traditional medicine.
The isoflavonoids comprise a group of phyto-oestrogens that have useful biological activities including oestrogenic, antioxidant and anticancer. As dietary components for humans, they are bioavailable from leguminous vegetables (such as genistein from soybean), and have been well-documented to have numerous health benefits. A wide range of epidemiological studies in humans and limited studies in animals have identified isoflavonoids as potential chemopreventive agents against hormone-dependent cancers. Therefore, an attempt has been made through this review to summarise the information in the mechanisms aspect of isoflavonoid phyto-oestrogens in inhibiting cancer in vitro and in vivo in the models of human cancers.
Chemoprevention entails the use of synthetic agents or naturally occurring dietary phytochemicals to prevent cancer development and progression. One promising chemopreventive agent, procyanidin, is a naturally occurring polyphenol that exhibits beneficial health effects including anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, and antitumor activities. Currently, many preclinical reports suggest procyanidin as a promising lead compound for cancer prevention and treatment. As a potential anticancer agent, procyanidin has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of various cancer cells in "in vitro and in vivo". Procyanidin has numerous targets, many of which are components of intracellular signaling pathways, including proinflammatory mediators, regulators of cell survival and apoptosis, and angiogenic and metastatic mediators, and modulates a set of upstream kinases, transcription factors, and their regulators. Although remarkable progress characterizing the molecular mechanisms and targets underlying the anticancer properties of procyanidin has been made in the past decade, the chemopreventive targets or biomarkers of procyanidin action have not been completely elucidated. This review focuses on the apoptosis and tumor inhibitory effects of procyanidin with respect to its bioavailability.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the synergic effects of combined treatment with taurine and cisplatin in human breast cancer, MCF-7 cells. For this study, MCF-7 cells were treated with taurine (5, 10, and 20 mM) and cisplatin (0.5 ${\mu}M$) for 48 and 72 hrs. Co-treatment of cisplatin with taurine decreased cell proliferation more compared with cisplatin alone. Reduced cell proliferation was caused by apoptosis. Therefore we investigated the apoptotic cells. After treatment of cisplatin and taurine, apoptotic cells were slightly increased. Apoptosis-related proteins, cleaved caspases and cytochrome c were increased. The present study suggests that combination treatment of cisplatin with taurine enhance anticancer activity of cisplatin in MCF-7 cells.
Transcription factors (TF) can bind tightly to specific DNA lesions formed by some anticancer agents. The formation these TF:(drug-modified DNA) complex may disrupt expression of genes critical for cell survival, and it was proved to be one of biochemical mechanisms of anticancer activity. Based on this model, we have designed programmable DNA Alkylating agents that can also attract TF, especially nuclear receptors. As a model compound, we designed drug molecules, RA-mustard and Am580-mustard, that enable to bind both retinoic acid receptor (RAR) and DNA by using molecular modeling techniques, and synthesized them by connecting chlorambucil and ligand for RAR with a linker unit. Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP), a redox modulation tool, is capable of inhibiting a wide spectrum of cancers and has thus been proposed as an emerging onco-therapy. However, with incremental successes consecutively reported on the anticancer efficacy of CAP, no consensus has been made on the types of tumours sensitive to CAP due to the different intrinsic characteristics of the cells and the heterogeneous design of CAP devices and their parameter configurations. These factors have substantially hindered the clinical use of CAP as an oncotherapy. It is thus imperative to clarify the tumour types responsive to CAP, the experimental models available for CAP-associated investigations, CAP administration strategies and the mechanisms by which CAP exerts its anticancer effects with the aim of identifying important yet less studied areas to accelerate the process of translating CAP into clinical use and fostering the field of plasma oncology.

Natural plant extract has been the subject of intense research aiming in elucidating the underlying mechanisms of their chemopreventive effects upon various forms of human cancers. The objective of our study was to evaluate the natural antioxidants and anticancer agent potential of Phyllostachys. The chemical composition of steam extract from Phyllostachys was carried out using GC-MS. The steam extract of Phyllostachys was dominated by monoterpenes (62.96% - 71.36%) and sesquiterpenes (23.58% - 33.13%) as the main compounds. The antioxidant activities of the steam extract was determined using a DPPH scavenging and hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity test systems. Furthermore, the amounts of total phenolics in steam extract were determined spectrometrically The steam extract of P. pubescens and P. bambusoides were presented the high activity (69.4% and 64.0%, respectively.). The steam extract from Pyllostachys species showed a hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity of approximately 50.4% - 54.6% when compared to that of the standard gallic acid. The anticancer activities of steam extract were determined using a MTT assay. Assessment of the cytotoxic effect of the steam extract on PC-3 cells showed that the P. bambusoides (20.85%) and P. pubescens (20.41%) were superior in induced cytotoxicity compared with the steam extract of P. nigra var. henonis (1.15%). Findings from this study indicated that steam extract of P. bambusoides and P. pubescens possessed potential as medicinal drug especially in prostate cancer treatment.

Inositol hexaphosphate ($IP_6$) is a major constituent of most cereals, legumes, nuts, oil seeds and soybean. Previous studies reported the anticancer effect of $IP_6$ and suggested that co-treatment of $IP_6$ with inositol may enhance anticancer effect of $IP_6$. Although the anticancer effect of $IP_6$ has been intensively studied, the combinational effect of $IP_6$ and inositol and involved mechanisms are not well understood so far. In the present study, we investigated the effect of $IP_6$ and myo-inositol (MI) on cell cycle regulation and apoptosis using PC3 prostate cancer cell lines. When cell, were co-treated with $IP_6$ and MI, the extent of cell growth inhibition was significantly increased than that by $IP_6$ alone. To identify the effect of $IP_6$ and MI on apoptosis, the activity of caspase-3 was measured. The caspase-3 activity was significantly increased when cells were treated with either $IP_6$ alone or both $IP_6$ and MI, with no significant enhancement by co-treatment. To investigate the effect of $IP_6$ and MI of cell cycle arrest, we measured p21 mRNA expression in PC3 cells and observed significant increase in p21 mRNA by $IP_6$. But synergistic regulation by co-treatment with $IP_6$ and MI was not observed. In addition, there was no significant effect by co-treatment compared to $IP_6$ treatment on the regulation of cell cycle progression although $IP_6$ significantly changed cell cycle distribution in the presence of MI or not. Therefore, these findings support that $IP_6$ has anticancer function by induction of apoptosis and regulation of cell cycle. However, synergistic effect by MI on cell cycle regulation and apoptosis was not observed in PC3 prostate cancer cells.

Background: Ginseng, which is widely used in functional foods and as an herbal medicine, has been reported to reduce the proliferation of prostate cancer cells by mechanisms that are not yet fully understood. Methods: This study was designed to investigate the changes in ginsenoside content in ginseng after treatment with a microwave-irradiation thermal process and to verify the anticancer effects of the extracts. To confirm the anticancer effect of microwave-irradiated processed ginseng (MG), it was tested in three human prostate cancer cell lines (DU145, LNCaP, and PC-3 cells). Involvements of apoptosis and autophagy were assessed using Western blotting. Results: After microwave treatment, the content of ginsenosides Rg1, Re, Rb1, Rc, Rb2, and Rd in the extracts decreased, whereas the content of ginsenosides 20(S)-Rg3, 20(R)-Rg3, Rk1, and Rg5 increased. Antiproliferation results for the human cancer cell lines treated with ginseng extracts indicate that PC-3 cells treated with MG showed the highest activity with an half maximal inhibitory concentration of $48{\mu}g/mL$. We also showed that MG suppresses the growth of human prostate cancer cell xenografts in athymic nude mice as an in vivo model. This growth suppression by MG is associated with the inductions of cell death and autophagy. Conclusion: Therefore, heat processing by microwave irradiation is a useful method to enhance the anticancer effect of ginseng by increasing the content of ginsenosides Rg3, Rg5, and Rk1.
