To investigate the serum neutralizing antibodies against Ibaraki disease virus in the western area of Kyunggi province, a sero-epidemiological survey was done from August 1995 to March 1996. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. An overall prevalence of the neutralizing antibodies agaist Ibaraki virus was as high as 68.6% (218 positive reactors amomg 318 heads of dairy cattle). 2. It showed the regional differences with 60.5${\ulcorner}$(46/76) in Koyang, 75.2% (100/133) in Paju and 66.1% (72/109) in Kimpo. 3. It also appeared with a seasonal difference showing 74.4% of prevalence with the mean titer higher than 60 during the mosquito season (from August to November) and 58.6% of prevalence with the mean titer 22 after the mosquito season to March. 4. Any cross reactions between Ibaraki and bluetongue viruses were not detected in the ELISA and AGID tests.
As a baseline study for the establishment of bovine leukemia virus(BLV)-free herd in Korea, the prevalence of anti-BLV antibody was determined in the present study. Sera from Korean native cows of 8 provinces and from dairy cattle of 9 provinces were subjected to enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Anti-BLV antibodies were positive in two (0.14%) of 1,413 Korean native cows. In contrast. 54.2% of 2,415 dairy cows were positive for anti-BLV antibodies, and their seropositive herd rate was 86.8%. And no differences were found in the sero-positive rates with age. The results indicate that the BLV infection rate has been increased continuously in Korea and that the establishment of BLV-free herd is imminent.

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is one of the most important disease viruses in cattle that can cause severe economical losses due to decreased fertility, abortion, diarrhea, and respiratory symptoms. Therefore, this study was aimed to investigate prevalence of BVDV infection (Transiently infection, Persistently infection) in dairy cattle in Gyeongnam southern area, Korea and use this data as the basis for establishing an eradication program and policy. A total of 44 bulk-tank milk samples (farms) collected in milk collecting center were tested for BVDV antibody using an ELISA. As the result, out of a total of 44 bulk-tank milk samples (farms), 38 (86.4%) samples were BVDV antibody positive. Blood samples (17 farms, n=543) were collected from BVDV antibody positive farms in bulk-tank milk, tested for BVDV antigen with ELISA and PCR. BVDV infected farms were 47% (8/17) and BVDV infected head were 2.2% (12/543). Persistently infected cattle (PI) were detected at 6 (35.3%) farms out of 17 farms and a total of 6 (1.1%) out of 543 head of cattle were identified as PI. The seropositive of BVDV antibody at farms and head were 100% (17/17) and 49.45% (91/184), respectively. The seroprevalence of BVDV antibody in PI infected farms (67.35%) much higher than that of BVDV antibody in transiently infected cattle (TI) infected farms (45%) and uninfected farms (34.48%). For eradication of BVDV infection in cattle populations, First of all, we should remove PI and need vaccination.
A total of 542 children under 10 years of age, admitted to the Seoul National University Children's Hospital, was examined for antibody titers of Toxoplasma gondii using indirect latex agglutination (ILA) test. Among them, 7.7% showed positive titers higher than 1:32, without significant difference between males (7.3%) and females (8.5%). The seropositive rate increased with age although the statistical significance was negligible (0.05

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is one of the most widespread zoonotic helminthiases, which can last an asymptomatic infection for several years. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate serum antibody prevalence of CE among asymptomatic people in Uzbekistan using ELISA. A total of 2,547 serum samples were collected, 66 from confirmed CE patients and 2,481 of patients with other diseases than CE at a hospital in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The serum samples were screened for CE specific IgG antibodies by ELISA using cystic fluid antigen obtained from sheep. The serum antibody positive rate was 89.4% (59/66) in CE and 3.6% (89/2,481) in other disease patients. The present ELISA recognized 89.4% sensitivity and 96.4% specificity. The ELISA absorbance of positive samples was distributed 0.271-0.971 for CE and 0.273-0.887 for other disease patients. The other disease patients with high absorbance over 0.3 were 50 (2.0%) who were presumed to be active CE patients. The patients in their 40s showed the highest positive rate of 5.2% (P=0.181), and women were 4.4% while men were 3.1% positive (P=0.136). The data confirmed that there are many asymptomatic patients of CE in Tashkent. It is indicated that CE is an endemic disease of public health importance in Uzbekistan.
The present study investigated serological and molecular prevalence of Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) and Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) infection in unvaccinated broiler breeder farms in Jeonbuk providence. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) had been used to determine antibody titers against MG and MS, and genome of these pathogens, respectively. Seventy five percent of farms were seropositive for MG and 94% of farms were seropositive for MS. In addition, the rate of antibody positive flocks against MG were 65.3% (32/49), while the rate of positive flocks against MS were 84.2% (80/95). The geometric mean antibody titers were $802.2{\pm}626$ and $27,726.7{\pm}2426$ against MG and MS, respectively. Interestingly, none of samples was positive for MG genome by PCR, while 94% (farms), 82% (flocks) and 62.6% (broiler breeder) were positive for MS genome by PCR. These findings suggest that the prevalence of MG or MS infection could be higher than expected. Thus, strict prevention program including vaccination and environmental sanitation should be implemented to avoid disease transmission from breeder to broilers as well as transmission among broilers.
The rate of 67 neonatal calves's infection of Theileria sergenti was investigated in random samples on the farms located in Kyeongki, Chonbuk and Jeju districts of Korea. The criteria used in verifying infection with T sergenti included the detection of parasites by giemsa's stain and acridine orange stain in the blood smear slides. Further evidence of current or previous exposure to T sergenti was based on the demonstration of T sergenti-specific antibody and antigen by the western immunoblot and the indirect immunofluorescence antibody test in the peripheral blood of the calves. The prevalence rates were 35%, 50% and 100% in Kyeongki, Chonbuk and Jeju provinces respectively and the overall prevalence in all the farms was 43.2% by means of acridine orange stain. The parasites that were observed in the peripheral blood of calves was shown surely by the western immunoblot to the characteristic 34KD antigen among the proteins of T sergenti (Korean Isolate). And the antibody of the neonatal calves reacted at the very highest titer(1 : >2,520). These data highlight the significance of T sergenti in the neonatal calf disease in Korea.
The antibody titers against Coxiella burnetii (Q fever) among cattle raised in Gwangju area were analyzed from February to October in 2015. The prevalence of antibodies in collected bulk-tank milk from 7 dairy cattle farms was 57.1% and the seroprevalence of 210 dairy cows randomly selected from those farms was 7.1%. By age, the seroprevalence was 3.3% in less than 4 years of age, 9.0% between 4 and 7 years of age, and 28.6% in more than 8 years of age. On the other hand, the seroprevalence of the Hanwoo cattle was 0.4%. The result suggested that the antibodies against Coxiella burnetii increase as the age of the dairy cows increases and therefore, it is necessary to keep monitoring the prevalence of Q fever in Gwangju area.
Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is a severe cross-border infectious disease that causes fever, skin and visceral nodules in cattle. LSD is caused by the lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV), a dsDNA virus that belongs to the genus Capripoxvirus. Although LSD has been found only in Southern Africa traditionally, in the last decade it is spreading very quickly through the Middle East and into Eastern Europe and China. It usually affects cattle and water buffalos being transmitted by blood-feeding insects. As it causes a huge economic impact, LSD is a notifiable disease by World Organisation for Animal Health, and managed as the legal infectious disease class I in Korea. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to confirm the existence of LSDV antigens or antibodies in Korean livestock. We collected 1,200 blood samples from cattle (Korean native and dairy cattle) and Korean water deer in 4 major provinces of the country, then tested the existence of LSDV antigen and antibody. None (0.0%) of the 1,200 blood samples were positive for both antigen and antibody of LSDV. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that examines the prevalence of LSDV in Korea. Our study aims to report the LSDV occurrence situation obtained by surveillance in Korea and provide information that may help prevention of LSD epidemics.
Toxoplasmosis, a neglected tropical disease caused by the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii, occurs throughout the world. Human T. gondii infection is asymptomatic in 80% of the population; however, the infection is life-threatening and causes substantial neurologic damage in immunocompromised patients such as HIV-infected persons. The major purpose of this study was to investigate the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in subjects infected with HIV/AIDS in eastern China. Our findings showed 9.7% prevalence of anti-T. gondii IgG antibody in HIV/AIDS patients, which was higher than in intravenous drug users (2.2%) and healthy controls (4.7%), while no significant difference was observed in the seroprevalence of anti-Toxoplasma IgM antibody among all participants (P>0.05). Among all HIV/AIDS patients, 15 men (7.7%) and 10 women (15.9%) were positive for anti-T. gondii IgG antibody; however, no significant difference was detected in the seroprevalence of anti-Toxoplasma IgG antibody between males and females. The frequency of anti-Toxoplasma IgG antibody was 8.0%, 13.2%, 5.5%, and 0% in patients with normal immune function ($CD4^+$ T-lymphocyte count ${\geq}500cells/ml$), immunocompromised patients (cell count ${\geq}200$ and <500 cells/ml), severely immunocompromised patients (cell count ${\geq}50$ and <200 cells/ml), and advanced AIDS patients, respectively (cell count <50 cells/ml), while only 3 immunocompromised patients were positive for anti-T. gondii IgM antibody. The results indicate a high seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in HIV/AIDS patients in eastern China, and a preventive therapy for toxoplasmosis may be given to HIV/AIDS patients based on $CD4^+$ T lymphocyte count.
