  • A UHF band wireless identification system based on passive surface acoustic wave(SAW) devices is presented in this paper. SAW ID tags were fabricated on Y-Z $LiNbO_3$ piezoelectric substrate with a good electro-mechanical coupling property. To reduce degradation of the antenna performance associated with the piezoelectric materials, an efficient design of the SAW RFID antenna is introduced. By measuring the parameters of the SAW ID tag, the performance of the antenna was tested by experimentation.

  • A single-layered radial line slot array (SL-RLSA) antenna etched on a substrate and fad by a rectangular waveguide is presented in the 60 ㎓ band. The design curves are obtained by an efficient electromagnetic coupling analysis using Ewald Sum technique and Shanks transformation. The antenna has rectangular waveguide feed structure using a rectangular waveguide-to-radial line transition. The prototype antenna of 10 cm-diameter was tested and the gain of 31 ㏈i and the efficiency of 38% were measured at 60 ㎓.

  • In this letter, a novel zeroth-order resonant (ZOR) antenna on vialess co-planar waveguide (CPW) is proposed. It is based on a composite right/left-handed CPW transmission line. To achieve a compact size, this antenna utilizes the ZOR condition, and its reactive parameters determine the resonant frequency. Each unit cell is composed of a metallic top patch and meander lines. Since it is realized on the CPW single layer, the proposed antenna has the benefits of being a compact size and easy to fabricate. The bandwidth of 6.8% and efficiency of 62% are experimentally achieved. Its bandwidth is enhanced compared with other ZOR antennas.

  • This letter presents the design of a novel multiband USB dongle antenna with a compact ground plane. The radiating patch is composed of a modified meander-line monopole and a shorted loop to generate a dual-broadband resonance. The proposed antenna supports WiBro, Bluetooth, WLAN, WiMAX, and S-DMB services. The total dimensions of the fabricated antenna are 10 mm ${\times}$ 45 mm ${\times}$ 1 mm, the most compact size among multiband USB dongle antennas reported to date. The measured 10 dB reflection loss bandwidths are 20.8% (2.24 GHz to 2.76 GHz) and 20.2% (4.86 GHz to 5.95 GHz). The measured peak gain is 2.97 dBi, and efficiency is higher than 58%. In addition, the radiation pattern approximates an omnidirectional pattern.

  • Although $High-T_c $superconducting HTS antennas have high efficiency and high gain, narrow bandwidth due to the high Q is the major limitation for application of satellite communication and mobile communication. Defining bandwidth as the frequency range over which standing wave ratio (SWR) is 2:1 or less, HTS antenna bandwidths are typically less than 1 %. Thus considerable effort has been focused on developing HTS antennas for broadband operation. In this work the HTS antenna array, using the bipin antenna which consisted of two triangle-radiation patches, was designed and fabricated using a ${YBa}_2{Cu}_3{O}_7x (YBCO)$ superconducting thin film on a MgO substrate for broadband operation. Also gold antennas with the same dimension as our HTS antennas were fabricated on the MgO substrate for the comparison. Experimental results for both antennas were reported in terms of radiation patterns, return losses, bandwidths and other various characteristics. The center frequency of HTS antennas was 20.28 GHz and the bandwidth obtained was significant 10 %.

  • In this study, optimum locations for a loop-type ground radiation antenna are evaluated for C-shaped ground planes of two different sizes. To achieve good radiation performance, the antenna needs to be located such that it couples with the dominant current mode of the ground plane. Antenna locations are proposed using the characteristic mode analysis of the ground planes. The measured bandwidths of the antennas at the proposed locations have more than twice the bandwidths of the cases in which the antennas are coupled with non-dominant modes. The operating frequency of the antennas is 2.45 GHz.

  • MIMO(Multiple Input Multiple Output) slot antenna that operates on the dual WiFi band(2.401~2.495GHz, 5.18~5.825GHz), in this paper, was studied. The basic theory for the slot design is based on the coupling between adjacent slot, and slots are fed by the each microstrip lines. Two slot antennas for the MIMO operation are located on the left and the right side of top of the metal notebook, and grounds between a notebook and two microstrip feeding lines are connected. Measurement of return loss showed under -6dB on entire design band, and isolation was below than -30dB. Radiation efficiency, average gain and peak gain for the left and the right slot were measured in the anechoic chamber, and showed good performances as 57.25%, -2.42dBi, 5.64dBi and 55.35%, -2.61dBi, 6.42dBi for the 2.4GHz band and 55.89%, -2.58dBi, 7.3dBi and 53.79%, -2.8dBi, 7.54dBi for the 5GHz band.

  • In wireless communications, antenna selection (AS) is a widely used method for reducing comparable cost of multiple RF chains in MIMO systems. As is well known, most of literatures on combining AS with MIMO techniques concern linear modulations such as phase shift keying (PSK) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). The combination of CPM and MIMO has been considered an optimal choice that can improve its capacity without loss of power and spectrum efficiency. The aim of this paper is to investigate joint transmit and receive antenna selection (JTRAS) in CPM MIMO systems. Specifically, modified incremental and decremental JTRAS algorithms are proposed to adapt to arbitrary number of selected transmit or receive antennas. The computational complexity of several JTRAS algorithms is analyzed from the perspective of channel capacity. As a comparison, the performances of bit error rate (BER) and spectral efficiency are evaluated via simulations. Moreover, computational complexity of the JTRAS algorithms is simulated in the end. It is inferred from discussions that both incremental JTRAS and decremental JTRAS perform close to optimal JTRAS in BER and spectral efficiency. In the sense of practical scenarios, adaptive JTRAS can be employed to well tradeoff performance and computational complexity.

  • Recently, a multi-user massive MIMO (MU-Massive MIMO) network has been attracting tremendous interest as one of technologies to accommodate explosively increasing mobile data traffic. The MU-Massive MIMO network can significantly enhance the network capacity because a base station (BS) equipped with large-scale transmit antennas can transmit high-rate data to multiple users simultaneously. In the MU-Massive MIMO network, transmit antenna selection schemes are generally used to decrease the computational complexity and cost of the BS. In this paper, we investigate the energy efficiency of the transmit antenna selection scheme in the MU-Massive MIMO network and the optimal number of selected transmit antennas for maximizing the energy efficiency.
