  • The filamentous cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. Strain PCC 7120 produces a developmental patten of single hete- rocysts separated by approximately 10 vegetative cells. Heterocysts differentiate from vegetative cells and are spe- cialized for nitrogen fixation. The patS gene, which encodes a small peptide that inhibits heterocyst differentiation, is expressed in proheterocysts and plays a critical role in establishing the heterocyst pattem. Another key regulator of heterocyst development is the hetR gene. hetR mutants fail to produce heterocysts and extra copies of hetR on a plas- mid cause a multiple contiguous heterocyst phenotype. To elucidate the relationship between these two counter act- ing factors in the genetic regulatory pathway during heterocyst differentiation, the expression patterns of a patS-gfp and a hetR-gfp fusion were examined in a patS deletion and a hetR deletion strain. The results, in combination with the result from a hetR and patS double deletion strain, suggest patS and hetR are mutually antagonistic and the bal- ance between these two factors in tow different cell types (heterocysts and vegetative cells) may be critical during the decision making process on their cell fates.

  • Force control of robotic mechanisms continues to be a challenging area. Previous implementation have seldom produced satisfactory results, and researchers in the past have experienced significant instability problems associated with their force controllers. In this study, a new stability factor in force control will be pointed out. When a manipulator is constrained to an environment(force-controlled), geometric instability due to the relationship between the manipulator configuration and the force-controlled direction is shown to be a significant factor in overall system stability. This exploratory study points out a rather intuitive, geometrically based stability factor in terms of an effective system stiffness and analyzes the phenomenon both analytically and graphically. Also, a stiffness control algorithm using the kinematic redundancy of a kinematically redundant manipulator is proposed to improve the overall stability in force control.

  • An effective stiffness, analogous to that of a wound spring, can be created by antagonistic redundant actuation of general closed-chain mechanisms. The qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the effective stiffness are investigated through a Four-bar mechanism, and a load distribution method is introduced which simultaneously guarantees the required system motion and the effective stiffness of the Four-bar mechanism. Furthermore, a simulation is performed to understand the inter-relationship among the effective stiffness, the Four-bar geometry, and the actuation effort. Based on this analysis, the Four-bar synthesis problem for effective stiffness generation is discussed.

  • In this study, twenty-one oleanane-type triterpenoid saponins were isolated from a methanol extract of the roots of Pulsatilla koreana. Antagonistic activities were measured in these compounds by the aequorin based cellular functional assay system for the corticotropin releasing factor receptor (CRF1). Of them, compounds 7 - 10 showed the highest degree of CRF1 inhibition further at the concentration of $10{\mu}M$. Moreover, by the analysis based on the structure-activity relationship of isolated saponins, a sugar chain at C-3 and a carboxyl group at C-28, as well as a methyl group at C-23 seems to be key functional elements. To our knowledge, this is the first report on CRF1 inhibition of saponins from P. koreana.

  • We found out that there exists threshold dose for the decreased platelet count when we apply change of the platelet count to the defense of the ultrasound experiment. Those diminution is definite effects from the defense of the ultrasound. The number of the platelet count is decreased when we are exposed to ultrasound simultaneously. This should not be occurred. It is easy to use the number of the platelet count in the measurement of the biological dosage and intensity in high dosage relatively due to definite quantative relationship. The biological index to understand synergic effects. which are present when two harmful environmental factors are operating at the same time is functionally assending and antagonistic. There are scattered many factors as physical, Chemical, or physiochemically elements which are harmful to human body in the environment in consideration of ultrasound and the other factors. This experiment is demonstrating that we can use the change of the platelet as an index representing synergic effects of ultrasound.

  • The actinomycete strain AMLK-335 was antagonistic to vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). Based on the diaminopimelic acid (DAP) type, and morphological and physiological characteristics revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), AMLK-335 was confirmed to belong to the genus Streptomyces. Analysis of the 16S rDNA nucleotide sequences found AMLK-335 to have a relationship with Streptomyces platensis. The production of antibiotic from this strain was most favorable when cultured on glucose, polypeptone, yeast extract (PY) medium for 6 days at $27^{\circ}$. The antibiotic was identified as cyclo(L-phenylalanyl-L-prolyl) by comparing ti with the reported MS and NMR spectral data. Cyclo(phe-pro) from the PY cultures of AMLK-335 was most effective (K-98-258). Futhermore, cyclo(phe-pro) had antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Microcuccs luteus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, but it wa ineffective against Candida albicans, Streptomyces murinus, and Aspergillus niger.

  • Purpose- This study seeks to investigate the impact of foreign remittances on private sector investment and the moderating role of banking sector development in Sub-Saharan African Countries. Research design, data, and methodology-The study has used a sample of 15 Sub-Saharan African countries and data for the years 1986 - 2017. Data was obtained from the World Bank Development Indicator (WDI) Database. Panel data diagnostic tests were conducted to ascertain the suitability of the data for regression analysis. The data was analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics, while the hypothesis was tested through hierarchical regression analysis. Results- The finding of this study indicates that foreign remittances and banking sector development had a significant and positive effect on private investment in Sub-Saharan Africa. Besides, the banking sector development significantly moderated the foreign remittances and private sector investment relationship. Conclusions- Based on the results, the study concludes that banking sector development has an important influence on foreign remittances and private sector investment nexus. Due to the antagonistic interaction between foreign remittance and banking sector development, the study recommends the use of alternative ways of channeling remittances to private investment such as; issuance of diaspora bonds and appeal for direct investment by citizens living abroad.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of Zn and Pb concentration on seed germination and plant growth in water and soil culture, and the frequency of chlorosis invegetation and the relationship between plants and soil in the Sambo mine. The inhibition of germination were observed in 1000ppm of Zn, 10ppm of Pb and 5000ppm of Zn + Pb, but germination was more stimulated in 10ppm of Zn than control. The symptoms of chlorosis and abnormality were occurred in plant leaves grown to the soils treated with more than 1000ppm of Pb. Reasons of chlorosis were considered as an antagonistic effect of other metals towards uptake of iron by the plant in Zn treatment. The contents of Zn and Pb in fruits were lower than those of leaves, and that was remarked in case of Pb. With increasing rate of Zn and Pb treatment, chemical components of soils in pot culture were accompanied by slight decrease in pH, total nitorgen and exchangeable K. Chlorotic individuals of 10 species were shown in the areas of the Sambo mine. Chlorotic symptoms were especially extensive and severe in Sophora angustifolia, Populus alba, Spiraea prunifolia, Amorpha fruticota, Lespedeza bicolor and Salix dependens. Plants in the investigated areas grew in soils containing Zn of 311ppm and Pb of 151ppm on an average, and accumulated Zn of 2084ppm and Pb of 49ppm.

  • Recently, importance of the rehabilitation of hand pathologies as well as the development of high-technology hand robot has been increased. The biomechanical model of hand is indispensable due to the difficulty of direct measurement of muscle forces and joint forces in hands. In this study, a three-dimensional biomechanical model of four fingers including three joints and ten muscles in each finger was developed and a mathematical relationship between neural commands and finger forces which represents the enslaving effect and the force deficit effect was proposed. When pressing a plate under the flexed posture, the muscle forces and the joint forces were predicted by the optimization technique. The results showed that the major activated muscles were flexion muscles (flexor digitorum profundus, radial interosseous, and ulnar interosseous). In addition, it was found that the antagonistic muscles were also activated rather than the previous models, which is more realistic phenomenon. The present model has considered the interaction among fingers, thus can be more powerful while developing a robot hand that can totally control the multiple fingers like human.
