  • This experiment was studied in the system of (1-x) CaO MgO $2SiO-Al_2O_3$ to investigate forming of solid solution. The technique empolyed was the well known water-quenching method. Differential thermal analysis of the each glass water quenched indicated that under 30 mole% $Al_2O_3$ was lowered with increasing of the amount of $Al_2O_3$ It was supposed by X-ray diffraction patterns of each specimen sintered at various temperature that only solid solution was formed under the 30mole % $Al_2O_3$ compositions solid solution and anorthite were formed at the 20mole% $Al_2O_3$ composition anorthite solid solution and spinel$(MgAl_2O_4)$ were formed over the 40mole% $Al_2O_3$ compositions. The maximum density and thermal expanison coefficient was 2.89g/cm 7.74x106./C$^{\circ}$ respectively in the composi-tion of 10 mole% $Al_2O_3$ . All the specimens showed linear thermal expansion behavior. Microhardness was as high as 850kg/nm2 in the composition of 5, 10, 20 mole % $Al_2O_3$ and dielectric constant was 7.3-6.9.

  • Cost effective clay adsorptive microfiltration membranes were synthesized to remove Cr (III) from high polluted water. Raw and calcined bentonite were mixed in order to decrease the shrinkage and also increase the porosity; then, 20 wt% of carbonate was added and the samples, named B (without carbonate) and B-Ca20 (with 20 wt% calcium carbonate) were uniaxially pressed and after sufficient drying, fired at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours. Then, physical and mechanical properties of the samples, their phase analyses and microstructure and also their ability for Cr(III) removal from high polluted water (including 1000 ppm Cr (III) ions) were studied. Results showed that the addition of calcium carbonate lead the porosity to increase to 33.5% while contrary to organic pore formers like starch, due to the formation of wollastonite, the mechanical strength not only didn't collapse but also improved to 36.77 MPa. Besides, sample B-Ca20, due to the presence of wollastonite and anorthite, could remove 99.97% of Cr (III) ions. Hence, a very economic and cost effective combination of membrane filtration and adsorption technology was achieved for water treatment which made microfiltration membranes act even better than nanofiltration ones without using any adsorptive nano particles.

  • In this study, the artificial coarse aggregate was manufactured by using coal ash and low grade clay. The characteristics of a coal ash-clay system were investigated using XRD, XRF, TG-DTA, SEM and Dilatometer with various coal ash contents. The chemical compositions are the fly ash, bottom ash and clay, $Al_2O_3$ are 28.5 wt%, 32.4 wt% and 18.1 wt%, and $SiO_2$ are 33.0 wt%, 53.7 wt% and 68.4 wt% in weight ratio, respectively. The shrinkage of specimens started at around $850^{\circ}C$ and changed little up to $1100^{\circ}C$, but increased markedly at above $1100^{\circ}C$. The shrinkage rate is strongly related to the decarbonization amount of coal ash. At the sintering temperature $1150^{\circ}C$, it was found that quartz, mullite, anorthite and albite phase exist in all specimens. It was found that bottom-clay system specimen sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$ had a good compressive strength of 87.5 kg/$cm^2$, and the compressive strength of bottom-clay specimen was higher than that of fly-clay system specimen. The reusability of coal ash as a raw material in the process of shotcrete resources such as artifical coarse aggregate is highly expected.

  • The equilibrium pressure-temperature curve of the reaction: 6 Ca$_2$Al$_3$(OH)Si$_3$O$_{12}$=6 CaAl$_2$Si$_2$O$_{8}$+2 Ca$_3$Al$_2$Si$_3$O$_{12}$+Al$_2$O$_3$+3 H$_2$O zoisite anorthite grossularite corundum was experimentally determined using both externally and internally heated pressure vessels in the pressure range of 2-4 kbar. Synthetic zoisite, anorthite, grossularite and corundum were used as starting materials. Starting materials were synthesized at 13-16 kbar using the piston-cylinder apparatus. The dehydration temperature of zoisite at 2 kbar is 550${\pm}$12$^{\circ}C$ and at 4 kbar is 575${\pm}$20$^{\circ}C$. Low thermal stability of synthetic zoisite relative to natural zoisite at 4 kbar is attributed to the structural disorder of synthetic anorthite.

  • Petroleum coke (petcoke) is widely used, next to coal, as a gasification feedstock. In gasification processes, the viscosity of the ash and the formation of crystalline phases must be understood to ensure the continuous removal of slag. This study investigates the effect of CaO and V2O3 on petcoke slag viscosity. The viscosity of the molten slag was measured in the temperature range of 1100~1600 ℃ while varying the concentration of each component. The crystalline phases formed in a cooled slag were examined. The most slag samples tested in this study exhibited crystalline slag behavior. The increased CaO concentration resulted in a lower viscosity and a lower Tcv. The viscosity behavior changed from the glassy to crystalline slag and also showed a higher Tcv as the concentration of V2O3 increases. Most slag samples showed different crystalline phases from top to bottom. Anorthites and Ca-V phases were observed in the top and middle section, while the bottom section mainly showed V2O3 and anorthite. The vanadium in the ash forms Ca-V and V-Fe phases and also remains in molten slag. A low melting Ca-V phase can contribute to lowering the viscosity.

  • As raw materials wollastonite, kaolin and pyrophyllite were used to synthesize mullite, anorthite and pseudowoll-astonite which were known as low thermal expansion substance. Increasing the amount of wollastonite in the composition resulted in a linear thermal expansion behavior. However, the increases of pyrophyllite indicated the relatively unstable themmal expansion behavior, because the phase transition occured in quartz of the pyrophyllite compositon. To lowering sintering temperature feldspar (Kebook and Anyang) were added in the composition that showed the linear thermal expantion behavior, and over 50'C were lowered.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanical properities and biocompatibility with crystallization temperature and time of a bioactive glass-ceramic system $41.4wt%SiO_{2}-35.0wt%CaO-3.0wt%MgO-12.0wt%P_{2}O_{5}-8.6wt%Al_{2}O_{3}$ with same molar percent of $Al_{2}O_{3}\;and\;P_{2}O_{5}$. The crystallization behaviors were investigated with DTA, XRD and SEM. Fracture toughness with the change of crystallization temperature and time was measured by indentation fracture method. Also, biocompatibility was evaluated by culture of mouse fibroblast cell line L929. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. The major crystalline phases were apatite and anorthite, and relative intensity of anorthite phase was increased at $1004^{\circ}C$. 2. The hardness and fracture toughness were gradually increased with the increase in ceraming temperature to $1004^{\circ}C$. 3. When the glass ceramic was heat-treated for 4 hours at ceraming temperature of $1004^{\circ}C$, hardness and fracture toughness showed the maximum values $578.84k/mm^2\;and\;2.07MPa\;m^{1/2}$, respectively. 4. The growth rate and cytotoxic of L929 fibroblast cells for bioactive glass ceramic were better than those of stainless steel and titanium.

  • This study has focused on the possibility for recycling tailings from the Sangdong tungsten mine as admixture for concrete. The XRD(X-ray diffraction analysis) and PSA(Particle size analysis) were performed to find mineralogical characteristics. As a result of XRD analysis, the tailings from the Sangdong tungsten fine were composed of quartz, chlorite, anorthite and cordierite etc. As a result of KSLT for cement mortar mixed with tailings from the Sangdong tungsten mine, most of heavy metals were determined as below the guide line for waste material. In addition, the setting time and compressive strength of cement mortar mixed with tailings from the Sangdong tungsten mine were investigated. It was indicated that the initial and final set were retarded according to increasing replacement of tailings from the Sangdong tungsten mine. The compressive strength of mortar was decreased with increasing replacement of failings from the Sangdong tungsten mine.

  • Iron oxides are the essential coloring oxides in traditional ceramic glazes. However, when Fe is involved in the coloration in the form of ions or colloids in glazes with low Fe content, it is difficult to identify the iron oxide phases. Generally, in many these glazes, Ca-rich minerals are observed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) or microscopic images, owing to their devitrification by the high Ca content. This study attempts to elucidate the correlation between the crystalline structure and coloration in the glazes while mainly focusing on neoformed Ca-rich minerals and Fe content. An experimental firing was carried out to produce tree ash glazes, with pine tree ash and Buyeo feldspar. In the case of oxidation glazes, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and XRD patterns did not exhibit any Ca-rich crystals, and all the visible light reflectance spectra lines exhibited a similar shape. In contrast, the reduction glazes divided into blue glazes and other colored glazes according to the shapes of their reflectance spectra. It was confirmed that the influence of Ca-rich minerals on the glaze color was more pronounced than the blue color of the reduction glazes when the Ca and feldspar contents were sufficiently high and low, respectively, to form wollastonite. As the Ca content increased and the elemental composition of the reduction glazes changed, the neoformation of the Ca-rich minerals, such as wollastonite, anorthite, diopside, and akermanite was sequentially observed.
