  • Effects of subcooling on pool boiling heat transfer in vertical annuli with closed bottoms have been investigated experimentally. For the test, a tube of 19.1mm diameter and the water at atmospheric pressure have been used. Three annular gaps of 7.05, 18.15, and 28.20 have been tested in the subcooled water and results of the annuli are compared with the data of a single unrestricted tube. The increase in pool subcooling results in much change in heat transfer coefficients. At highly subcooled regions, heat transfer coefficients for the annuli are much larger than those of a single tube. As the heat flux increases and subcooling decrease, a deterioration of heat transfer coefficients is observed at the annulus of 7.05mm gap. Single-phase natural convection and liquid agitation are the governing mechanisms for the single tube while liquid agitation and bubble coalescence are the major factors at the bottom closed annuli.

  • The solution for the natural convection in internally finned horizontal annuli is obtained by using a numerical simulation of time-dependent and two-dimensional governing equations. The fins existing in annuli influence the flow pattern, temperature distribution and heat transfer rate. The variations of the On configuration suppress or accelerate the free convective effects compared to those of the smooth tubes. The effects of fin configuration, number of fins and ratio of annulus gap width to the inner cylinder radius on the fluid flow and heat transfer in annuli are demonstrated by the distribution of the velocity vector, isotherms and streamlines. The governing equations are solved efficiently by using a parallel implementation. The technique is adopted for reduction of the computation cost. The parallelization is performed with the domain decomposition technique and message passing between sub-domains on the basis of the MPI library. The results from parallel computation reveal in consistency with those of the sequential program. Moreover, the speed-up ratio shows linearity with the number of processor.

  • An experimental investigation was performed to study the characteristics of turbulent swirling flow in an axisymmetric annuli. The swirl angle measurements were performed by flow visualization technique using smoke and dye liquid along the test tube. Using the Particle Image Velocimetry method, this study found the time-mean velocity distribution and turbulent intensity with swirl for Re = 20.000. 30.000, 50.000. and 70.000 along longitudinal sections and the results appear to be physically reasonable.

  • Fully developed turbulent flow through three concentric annuli with both the rough inner and outer walls was experimentally investigated for a Reynolds number range Re = 15, 000 - 85, 000. Measurements were carried out for the pressure drop, the positions of zero shear stress and maximum velocity, and the velocity distributions in annuli of radius ratios, ${\alpha}$=0.26, 0.4 and 0.56, respectively. The experimental results showed that the positions of zero shear stress and maximum velocity were only weakly dependent on the Reynolds number.

  • The structure of turbulence of fully developed flow through four concentric annuli with the rough outer wall was investigated experimentally for a Reynolds number range Re=15, 000-93, 000. Turbulence intensities were measured in three(u, v, w) directions, and turbulence shear stresses in annuli of radius=0.13, 0.26, 0.4 and 0.56, respectively. Due to the square roughness element attached periodically along the axial direction, the radial velocity fluctuations show similar distribution regardless of the different .alpha.cases. However, the axial and circumferential velocity fluctuation profiles demonstrate the longitudinal turbulence structures are strongly influenced by the .alpha. values. The turbulent eddy viscosity deduced form mean velocity distributions and the measured Reynolds shear stresses are also presented and discussed.

  • This paper is to present the results of a comprehensive study on heat transfer in annuli with spirally corrugated inner tubes in the turbulent regime. Tube surface-temperature measurements were used to explain the enhancement phenomena in the annuli with several different corrugated tubes. Nusselt numbers were between 1.1 and 2 times the smooth annulus values. These enhancement values can be used to determine the appropriate range of applicability for spirally corrugated annuli.

It was also found that the position of zero shear stress was not coincident with that of maximum velocity. Furthmore, the former was influenced more sensitively than the latter on the square-ribbed roughness along the axial direction.
