It is essential to use base papers having proper surface characteristics in coating operation for improving coated paper quality and coater runnability. To fulfill these purposes surface sizing of coating base stock with anionic oxidized starch is commonly practiced. It is suggested that use of cationic starch for surface sizing rather than conventional oxidized starch will improve coated paper quality since cationic starch penetrates less into paper structure because of its strong electrostatic interaction with anionically charged paper surface. Strong interaction of cationic surface sizing starch with anionic coating color is expected to promote rapid immobilization of the coating color and improve coating holdout and optical property. The immediate objective of this study was to examine the influence of surface sizing starches on the properties of coated papers. Structural characteristics of the coatings formed on the substrate surface sized with cationic and anionic starches were examined. To enhance the efficiency of cationic surface sizing starch on coated paper properties, strongly charged cationic polymers were added to the surface sizing starch and its effect on coated paper properties was evaluated. Results showed that opacity and light scattering coefficient of coated paper were higher when base paper surface sized with cationic starch was used. Addition of less than 1% of cationic poly-DADMAC to the cationic surface sizing starch improved the opacity of coated paper significantly.
Effect of cationic starches and anionic colloidal silica on retention and drainage characteristics of Compozil system was investigated. Depending upon the degree of substitution and molecular weight of cationic starches and morphological characteristics of anionic colloidal silica, retention and drainage properties of Compozil system were significantly influenced. When cationic starch addition level increased above a certain limit retention and stock freeness were decreased. To elucidate this an electrostatic coagulation mechanism occurring between unadsorbed starch molecules and anionic colloidal silica was proposed. Unstructured colloidal silica showed greater improvement in retention than structured colloidal silica. Cationic corn starches with different degree of substitution and molecular weights were prepared and their effect as a constituent of Compozil system was also evaluated. By controlling the molecular weight and degree of substitution of cationic corn starch it was possible to achieve significant improvement in fines retention. Cationic corn starch with higher degree of substitution maintained its retention efficiency even when the stock conductivity was increased. Turbidity measurement technique was found to be a simple and useful method to measure the retention characteristics.
The influence of simple electrolyte or anionic trashes on cationic starch adsorption was examined using deinked pulp and bleached thermomechniical pulp. Adsorbed amounts of cationic starches increased slightly , then decreased abruptly as the concentration of simple electrolyte increased. This phenomenon was discussed based on the compression of electrical double layer and conformation change of starch molecules. Also, the effect of the type of simple electrolytes on starch adsorption was examined and discussed. Addition of sodium slilicate increased starch adsorption since it increased surface charge density of fibers. On the other hand, addition of kraft lignin decreased cationic demand of the pulp slurries and adsorbed amounts of cationic starches. Nonionic surfactant did not show any significant effect on the cationic demand of pulp slurries. When simple electrolytes were added to the stock , grater adsorption or cationic starches was obtained with starches of lower degree of substitution . On t도 other hand, amount of adsorbed starches decreased for lower DS starches when the concentration of anionic trashes increased.
It is of critical importance to understand the characteristics of papermaking additives and their reaction mechanisms to fully utilize the benefits they provide. Among the papermaking additives, retention aids play critical roles in improving productivity, product quality and process economy. Diverse research efforts to understand the reaction mechanisms between cationic polymers and anionic microparticles have been made since microparticle retention systems were introduced into the market. And it is most commonly accepted that flocs formed by the addition of cationic polymers are dispersed by shear force and the broken flocs are reflocculated instantly with the addition of microparticles. There are still many unanswered questions, however, on the reaction phenomena between cationic polymers and anionic microparticles. In this study, several cationic polymers including waxy maize starch, com starch and guar gum were used to investigate their retention efficiency when they were used along with anionic colloidal silica.
In this study a process simulation method was used to analyze the accumulation phenomena of anionic starch in the process white water as the closure level of a fine paper making process is increased. A pilot paper machine was used as a model process. Dynamic simulations of the influence of white water usage ratio and uncoated broke addition ratio on the variation of process variable was monitored as a function of time. Results from the dynamic simulations showed that the volume of reservoirs affected the dynamic behavior of the process. The dynamic behavior of flow rate and dissolved starch concentration in process units were different from each other. The speed of the change of dissolved starch concentration in process units was depend on the starting point of the change of dissolved starch concentration, the length of circulation loop, and the volume of reservoirs.
Fillers have been used for printing paper to improve printability, sheet formation and optical properties and to reduce production costs by replacing expensive wood pulps. However, an increased filler content will decrease paper strength because filler particles interfere with fiber-fiber bonding. In order to increase filler content without sacrificing too much paper strength in high filler content papers, the surface of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) has been modified by adsorbing anionic polyacrylamide and cationic starch in series. The adsorbed polymer layers would enhance interactions between the filler surface and the fiber surface, improving internal bonding. It was found that the modified PCC increased paper strength at a given filler content compared to the coventional method. Negligible differences in optical properties and formation of paper, filler and fines retention and drainage on the wire section were observed between the modified and the conventional PCC. However, the decreased bulk of paper was observed when the modified PCC was used.
Use of high yield pulp and recycled fiber as raw materials and water system closure result in higher fines content and buildup of organic and inorganic contaminants in white water. These are detrimental for the effectiveness of chemical additives including retention aids. Thus it is imperative to employ a retention systems that maintains its efficiency in closed papermaking system for reducing fresh water consumption. The performance of four different microparticle retention systems including cationic polyacrylamide (C-PAM)/bentonite, highly charged cationic starch (HCS)/silica, C-PAM/micropolymer, cationic guar gum (CGG)/silica was evaluated and compared at three different levels of papermaking system closure. Buildup of detrimental substances in a closed white water system increased cationic demand and finally reduced the performance of retention systems. Cationic starch and guar gums maintained their effectiveness in retention in closed white water systems contaminated with anionic trashes because of their structural rigidity and hydrogen bonding ability. Particularly, cationic guar gums, due its stiffness of molecular structure, appeared perform better than catinonic starch.
Diverse benefits such as reduction of fresh water consumption and effluent discharge, efficient use of raw materials and energy savings can be obtained by papermaking system closure. Closure of papermaking processes, however, causes many problems including reduction of the efficiency of additives, decrease of retention and dewatering, felt plugging, poor Paper quality, generation of slime and odor, poor vacuum efficiency, etc, and it has been recognized that accumulation of Inorganic and organic substances in the process white water is the prime cause of these problems. Therefore, technological developments for preventing accumulation of these detrimental substances are urgently required for Implementing papermaking system closure. Understanding of the accumulation phenomena of the inorganic and organic substances in the papermaking process white water is prerequisite for papermaking system closure. In this study a process simulation method was used to analyze the accumulation phenomena of anionic starch In the process white water as the closure level of a fine paper making process is increased. A pilot paper machine was used as a model process. Starch adsorption and desorption models were developed based on the concept of starch adsorption ratio, which was not considered in previous studies. Steady state simulation studies were carried out based on this model using a commercial simulator. In steady state simulation, the variation of dissolved starch concentration in each process unit was monitored as a function of white water usage for wire shower. The result of the steady state simulation showed that dissolved starch concentration and its increase ratio in Process units increased as white water usage ratio for wire shower increased.
Paper strengthening system of PVAm (polyvinylamine) has been used with strong negative charge polymer for electrostatic neutralization due to strong positive charge of PVAm. Recently, because of the controversy caused by the possibility of remaining PAM monomers in white water, a search for paper strength agent that can substitute for PAM was suggested. Therefore, this study was carried out to evaluate a dry strength polymer of PVAm. Starch and CMC were used as a substitute for PAM. The dual polymer system of PVAm and anionic charge control agent such as anionic starch or CMC (carboxy methyl cellulose) were found to be very effective as strength agent compared to the chemicals based on acrylamide.
We used polymers of alternating cationic and anionic nature to build up shells on fiber surfaces, strengthen the worn-out fibers and improve paper properties made from such fibers. OCC and ONP pulps were either dipped or salted out in the cationic polyallylamine, polyacrylamide and starch solutions. After centrifugal drying, these were followed by treatments in anionic polyacrylic acid, poly-acrylamide, and starch solutions, respectively. The shell-enhanced fibers were formed into handsheets and their physical properties evaluated. The results show that building multiple shells on worn-out fiber surfaces can strengthen the fibers and paper. The simpler and more practical impregnation-centrifuging treatment provided the desired effects, whereas salting out the polymers produced somewhat superior fibers. The latter process, were impractical, however. The first pair of polymeric shells imparted marked strength improvement, whereas later layers had diminishing efficacies. Overall, the methods can improve fiber quality, attaining paper strength requirements without resorting to expensive measures. Alternate cationic polymer and filler powders were also deposited on fiber surface based on the micriparticle system in an anticipation of stiffness gains. Platy minerals, such as montmorillonite, bentonite, sericite, clay and talc were added following cationic PAM. After dewatering of polymer-pigment shelled fiber of one to 3 pairs of layers, handsheets either calendered or uncalendered were evaluated. The results indicate that regardless of calendaring, stiffness of the handsheets did not improve appreciably while certain other strength properties showed gains. We also attempted the novel starch gel filler addition method wherein tapioca starch and filers (PCC, sericite or clay) were mixed at high solids content of 50% and cooked until gelatinized. The filled handsheets were dried under various conditions and then tested for their properties. Improvements in strengths of modified filled paper were observed.
