  • This study was carried out evaluate to identify water quality and contamination characteristics of the shallow groundwater. and their seasonal variation in the rual area of the Yongin city. Groundwater sample were collected two times (in April and September) from a total of 19 well for domestic water supply. and surface-water samples from six locations. For cations, Ca and Mg predominated. In anion competition. the influence of Cl was obvious in the april samples. However. HCO$_3$ was a major component in the september samples. Electric conductivities and the concentrations of NO$_3$-N in groundwater samples significantly decreased from the april samples to the september samples This indicates a significant seasonal variation in the shallow groundwater composition. When the shallow aquifer is connected to the surface water. then metals sorbed on the stream sediments could occur at nearby wells through the induced recharge. Contaminants at ground surface appeared to be transported to the groundwater system infiltration during the spring melt.

  • To increase phosphate (P) availability in soils, the efficiency of silicate (Si) in reducing P adsorption was investigated by competitive adsorption tests under changing conditions of pH, ion concentrations, and order of anion addition along with single adsorption properties of each ion at $20^{\circ}C$. In the single ion adsorption study, P and Si ions showed the opposite reaction patterns: phosphate adsorption decreased with increasing pH and attained adsorption maximum however, silicate adsorption increased with increasing pH without attaining adsorption maximum. Phosphorus and Si adsorption were influenced by pH in the range of 5.0 - 9.0 and the type and amount of P and Si concentration. Silicate added to soil before P or in a mixture with P significantly reduced P adsorption above pH 7.0; however, there was no significant Si-induced decreased in P adsorption at pH 5.0 when anions were added as mixture. The efficiency of Si in reducing P adsorption increased with increasing Si concentration and pH. The effect of P on Si adsorption was relatively small at pH 5.0 and no effect of P on silicate adsorption was observed at pH 9.0. The presence of Si strongly depressed P adsorption when Si was added before P compared to P and Si added as a mixture. These results suggest that application of Si may decrease P adsorption and increase the availability of P in soils. Furthermore, a Si source would be better to add before P application to enhance the availability of P in soils.

  • This study noted that the actual mechanism of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) photodecomposition in the presence of $H_2O_2$ is missing from the previous works. This study investigated a key unknown reactive species (URS) enhanced by the addition of $H_2O_2$ during the photolysis of NDMA with $H_2O_2$, not hydroxyl radicals. In order to provide experimental evidences in support of URS formation, we have mainly used p-nitrosodimethylaniline, methanol, and benzoic acid as well-known probes of ${\cdot}OH$ in this study. Both loss of PNDA and formation of hydroxybenzoic acids were dependent on NDMA concentrations during the photolysis in a constant concentration of $H_2O_2$. In particular, competition kinetics showed that the relative reactivity of an URS was at least identical with ${\cdot}OH$-like reactivity. In addition, the decay of NDMA was estimated to be about 65% by the direct UV light and about 35% by the reactive species or URS generated through the photolysis of NDMA and $H_2O_2$. Therefore, our data suggest that a highly oxidizing URS is formed in the photolysis of NDMA with $H_2O_2$, which could be peroxynitrite ($ONOO^-$) as a potent oxidant by itself as well as a source of ${\cdot}OH$.

  • The study involved the categorization of domestic lakes located in South Korea into three groups based on their salinity levels: upstream reservoirs with salinity less than 0.3 psu, estuarine reservoirs with salinity ranging from 0.3 to 2 psu, and brackish lagoons with salinity exceeding 2 psu. Subsequently, the research assessed variations in the concentrations of total nitrogen (T-N) and total phosphorus (T-P) in the sediment of these lakes using statistical analysis, specifically one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Additionally, a laboratory core incubation test was conducted to investigate the benthic nutrient fluxes in Songji lagoon (salinity: 11.80 psu), Ganwol reservoir (salinity: 0.73 psu), and Janggun reservoir (salinity: 0.08 psu) under both aerobic and anoxic conditions. The findings revealed statistically significant differences in the concentrations of T-N and T-P among sediments in the lakes with varying salinity levels (p<0.05). Further post-hoc analysis confirmed significant distinctions in T-N between upstream reservoirs and estuarine reservoirs (p<0.001), as well as between upstream reservoirs and brackish lagoons (p<0.01). For T-P, a significant difference was observed between upstream reservoirs and brackish lagoons (p<0.01). Regarding benthic nutrient fluxes, Ganwol Lake exhibited the highest diffusive flux of NH4+-N, primarily due to its physical characteristics and the inhibition of nitrification resulting from its relatively high salinity. The flux of NO3--N was lower at higher salinity levels under aerobic conditions but increased under anoxic conditions, attributed to the impact of salinity on nitrification and denitrification. Additionally, the flux of PO43--P was highest in Songji Lake, followed by Ganwol Lake and Janggun Reservoir, indicating that salinity promotes the diffusive flux of phosphate through anion adsorption competition. It's important to consider the influence of salinity on microbial communities, growth rates, oxidation-reduction processes, and nutrient binding forms when studying benthic diffusive nutrient fluxes from lake sediments.
