This study was carried out to improve septic tank for piggery wastewater treatment of small pig farm. Septic tank were consisted of screen tank, aeration tank with two steps, settling tank, and filtering tank. Aeration tanks were filled with ALC of ø4~5cm. All operation steps were performed by timer from influent to effluent. Septic tank decreased BOD by 94.7% from 4,298.3mg/$\ell$ to 226.3mg/$\ell$ and also decreased SS by 92.4%, from 2,231.3mg/$\ell$ to 161.0mg/$\ell$, respectively.
Milking parlor wastewater contains not only high concentrations of organic compounds, but often animal antibiotics. To discharge the antibiotics to public water area cause problem of antibiotics resistant bacteria. Magnetic separation was applied into improvement of milking parlor wastewater treatment process. A new process, composed of a magnetic activated sludge (MAS) process and a contact oxidation (CO) process, was proposed in this study. This process was evaluated by the simulated milking parlor wastewater (4500 mg/L CODCr and 10 mg/L tetracycline) using a bench scale experimental setup. As a result, the process was able to removed 97% CODCr as well as 94% tetracycline. The MLVSS (mixed liquor volatile suspended solids) concentration of MAS was maintained at 12000 mg/L without excess sludge drawing. This process was considered to be useful as treatment process for milking parlor wastewater in which waste-milk including antibiotics is often discharged.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of re-establish the amount and major pollution source of swine wastewater from swine farms. The results obtained in this study was summarized as follow; The quantity of wastewater produced from the average volume of swine wastewater was $2.49{\ell}$/head/day and $2.49{\ell}$ in spring, $2.65{\ell}$ in summer, $2.47{\ell}$ in autumn, and $2.35{\ell}$ in winter. The quantity of wastewater production during summer season was higher than of the other seasons. The water pollutant concentration in wastewater of swine farms, $BOD_5$, SS, T-N and T-P, was $4,689\;mg/{\ell}$, $2,122\;mg/{\ell}$, $3,238\;mg/{\ell}$ and $118\;mg/{\ell}$, respectively.
Sequencing batch operation consists of fill, react, settle and decant phases in the same reactor. Operation consists of anaerobic, anoxic and oxic (aerobic) phases when nutrient removal from the wastewater is desired. Since the same reactor is used for biological oxidation (or mixing) and sedimentation in aerobic and anaerobic SBR operations, capital and operating costs are lower than conventional activated sludge process and conventional anaerobic digestion process, respectively. Therefore, Aerobic SBR and Anaerobic SBR operations may be more advantageous far treatment of small volume animal wastewater in rural areas.
With an increasing livestock population, animal manure production has been steadily increasing in Korea. This trend has forced farmers to spend more money for animal manure treatment in their farm. Therefore, research utilizing animal manure as a renewable resources has become increasingly important. The purpose of this study was to develop a stable advanced wastewater treatment system can be applied to conventional animal wastewater treatment processes and evaluate its contribution to reduce effluent discharge volume by recycling as flushing water. AOP (advanced oxidation process) process improved wastewater treatment efficiency in terms of color, suspended solids (SS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). Due to the addition of Hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$), pathogens, Salmonella and E. coli, reduction was accomplished. To enhance ozone treatment effect, three levels of ozone test on secondary effluent of pig slurry purification system were conducted. At the level of 5 g/hr, 6.7 g/hr and 8.4 g/hr color of secondary effluent of pig slurry purification system were decreased from 2,433 to 2,199, 2,433 to 1,980 and 2,433 to 243, respectively.
Over the past decade, there has been global expansion in the advancement of underwater cleaning technology for ship hulls. This methodology ensures both diver safety and operational efficiency. However, recent attention has been drawn to the harmful effects of ship hull-cleaning wastewater on marine animals. It is anticipated that this wastewater may have various impacts on a wide range of organisms, potentially leading to populationand ecosystem-relevant alterations. This concern is especially significant when the wastewater affects functionally important species, such as aquaculture animals and habitat-forming species living in coastal regions, where underwater cleaning platforms are commonly established. Despite this, information on the ecotoxicological effects of this wastewater remains limited. In this mini review, we discuss the adverse effects of wastewater from in-water cleaning processes, as well as the current challenges and limitations in regulating and mitigating its potential toxicity. Overall, recent findings underscore the detrimental effects posed by sublethal levels of wastewater to the health status of aquatic animals under both acute and chronic exposure.
Livestock wastewater is being discharged without treatment from Hasen's pig farm cluster in WangGoong (WG) area into the Iksan Stream, eventually flowing into the ManGyung (MG) at the upstream junction. Although it is well known that before discharge, wastewater must satisfy the pig slurry discharge standards; because of ongoing remodeling, proper treatment is not being performed. According to public records, wastewater from the WG pig farm cluster is responsible for 3.6% of MG River pollution and 2.0% of the SaeManGuem (SMG) Reservoir pollution. As a result, upstream water treatment quality has become primary concern for development of the SMG project. All physicochemical constituents and pathogenic microbes, such as chemical oxygen demand ($COD_{Cr}$), biochemical oxygen demand ($BOD_5$), total suspended solids (TSS), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorous (TP), fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli and Salmonella at the effluent of WG Plant (S-1) exceed the effluent standards. This is mainly due to insufficient wastewater treatment: the WG Plant is under renovation to increase water purification efficiency. By comparing the water quality at the S-7 junction, where the the Iksan Stream (pig farms) and the Wanggoong Stream (no pig farms) merge, it is clear that farming facilities and improper treatment can critically affect surrounding water quality. While it is clear throughout this study that the level of all physicochemical parameters and pathogenic microbes along the Stream decreased due to sedimentation, biodegradation and/or dilution. An alarming problem was discovered: the existence of pathogenic microbe count(E coli, Salmonella) in the lagoon wastewater and the stream water. Not only were high concentrations of these pathogens themselves found, but the potential existence of more serious pathogens could rise to more dangerous conditions.

Nitrate contamination in ground and surface water is an increasingly serious environmental problem and only a few bacterial strains have been identified that have the ability to remove nitrogen pollutants from wastewater under thermophilic conditions. We therefore isolated thermophilic facultative bacterial strains from wood chips that had been composted with swine manure under aerated high temperature conditions so as to identify strains with denitrifying ability. Nine different colonies were screened and 3 long rod-shaped bacterial strains designated as SG-01, SG-02, and SG-03 were selected. The strain SG-01 could be differentiated from SG-02 and SG-03 on the basis of the method that it used for sugar utilization. The 16S rRNA genes of this strain also had high sequence similarity with Geobacillus thermodenitrificans $465^T$ (99.6%). The optimal growth temperatures ($55^{\circ}C$), pH values (pH 7.0), and NaCl concentrations (1%) required for the growth of strain SG-01 were established. This strain reduced 1.18 mM nitrate and 1.45 mM nitrite in LB broth after 48 h of incubation. These results suggest that the G. thermodenitrificans SG-01 strain may be useful in the removal of nitrates and nitrites from wastewater generated as a result of livestock farming.
With the rapidly growing of the population and industrization of cities, the clean and affordable water resources have gained immense interest because of remaining about 780 million people still lack access to it. However, present wastewater treatment systems have been faced with various issues, such as low processing efficiency, high operational costs and the requirement of a large area for manufacturing. It is therefore urgently required to develop an inexpensive and efficient wastewater treatment system. As the one of these efforts, we suggested and successfully demonstrated the wastewater treatment system using and electrochemical method via a dimensionally stable anode (DSA) based on rutile type $RuO_2$. Our system achieved biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiently at the respective rates of 52.0%, 77.8%, and 65.6% from household wastewater. In addition, we were able to remove BOD, COD, total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) from animal husbandry wastewater at rates of 92.9%, 75.6%, 35.1%, and 100%, respectively, thereby achieving dramatic reductions. Considering the excellent removal efficiency and the small size of this device, electrochemical wastewater treatment using a DSA coated in rutile $RuO_2$ presents a promising option for the treatment of both household and animal husbandry wastewater.
Solid/Liquid(S/L) separation is crucial for biological treatment of animal wastewater. Liquid portion from S/L separation has less BOD-load and proper post-strip treatment can be obtained. Screen or declined sieve was normally used to separate the solid parts. For better separating efficiency a vibration and a cylindrical separator were constructed and tested. The results are summarized as follows; Solids removal efficiency and moisture content of separated solid were 15~26% and 85~88%, respectively for the vibration separator. for the cylindrical separator, solid removal efficiency and moisture content of solid were 16~39% and 86~89%, respectively. The greatest amount of drymatter was obtained when operating vibration separator with 10$^{\circ}$ inclination and 100% vibrating power. For the cylindrical separator maximum efficiency was obtained with 40 rpm and 19$^{\circ}$ inclination. The vibration and the cylindrical separator have shown 21% and 26% in BOD removal, respectively. These two types of separator were proved to be applicable methods for animal wastewater separation.
