A long- time aeration method was developed for purification of animal wastewater. Under repeated aereations of 4 hours on and 4 hours off, the higher removal rates were obtained which were in average of 99%, 96%, 92% and 50% for BOD, SS, total nitrogen and phosporous, respectively. In detail, the measured BOD concentrations of the influent and effluent were 2,700ppm and 40ppm while the SS concentrations in the primary chamber and of the effluent were about 3,000 and 110 ppm, respectively. Zeolite and activated carbon, applied for removing the nitrogen and phosphorous, showed a good absorption, especially zeolite for NH$_4$-N and activated carbon for NO$_3$-N and PO$_4$-P. The treatment cost per head by this method amounts to 1,923 won and it comes to 1.6% in the whole production cost. Therefore, this method is economically available with the half cost of the conventional activated sludge process.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the biologically treated animal wastewater as a liquid fertilizer in the paddy rice. The treated water has content of the ammonia nitrogen 24mg/I and nitrate 40 mg/I on an average in the first year. A trace of nitrite has been shown. The phosphate content was 92 mg/I on an average. The amount of yielded rice was 365kg/10a for test 1 (no fertilizer), 388dg/10a for test 2(chemical fertilizer), 526kg/10a for test 3 (treated water) respectively. The treated water showed 35% more in production than the chemical fertilizer. The treated water has content of the ammonia nitrogen 40mg/I and nitrate 67mg/I on an average in the second year. A trace of nitrite has been shown. The phosphate content was 57mg/I on an average. The amount of yielded rice was 402kg/10a for test 1, 505kg/10a for test 2, 607kg/10a for test 3 respectively. Yield of unhulled rice was 20% more in the plot of treated water than that of chemical fertilizer.
In general, livestock wastewater consists of many pollutants such as nitrogen, phosphorus, carbonic compounds and inorganic substances. Most carbonic and organic compounds are sufficiently removed by conventional secondary processes, but nitrogen, phosphorus and soluble inorganic compounds are little removed by traditional clarification process. These remained substances in wastewater, for instances, phosphorus and nitrogen are efficiently eliminated by advanced wastewater treatment or botanical removing process. Concentrations of $BOD_s$, SS, T-N and T-P in influent livestock wastewater used in this study were 126mg/l, 115mg/l, 45mg/l and 13mg/l, respectively. The hydraulic retention time(HRT) of wastewater was about 10 days in the pond packed with aquatic plants. A water-hyacinth and a water-dropwort were used as an experimental stuff plant. The removal ratios of nitrogen was 44.3% for the water-hyacinth and 40.2% for the water-dropwort. The removal efficiency of phosphorus in experimental ponds reached by 57.9% for the water-hyacinth and 58.5% for the water-dropwort for 10 days, respectively. Removal ratios of BODs and SS of livestock wastewater for 10 days were reached by 80.1%, 91.0% for he water-hyacinth, respectively. At the same condition, the removal ratios of BODs and SS were reached by 75.0%, 87.6% for the water-dropwort, respectively.
Magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) was recovered from swine wastewater and the feasibility of reutilizing it as a slowly-releasing fertilizer was evaluated. Maize growth was investigated with normal and high application rates of MAP and a fused super phosphate (FSP) fertilizer. A total of 5 treatments ($T_0$ = control, $T_1$ = MAP based on 30 kg P $ha^{-1}$, $T_2$ = FSP based on 30 kg P $ha^{-1}$+urea equivalent to nitrogen of MAP applied in $T_1$, $T_3$ = MAP based on 40 kg P $ha^{-1}$, $T_4$ = FSP based on 40 kg P $ha^{-1}$+urea equivalent to nitrogen of MAP applied in $T_3$) were arranged with 3 replications. In the case of height and circumference, significant differences were found between controls and treated maize plants (p<0.01). However, no statistical differences were found between MAP- and FSP-urea treated maize. Leaf area and green biomass yield were significantly (p<0.01) higher in the treated group than control. Leaf area was also found significantly higher (p<0.01) in the higher MAP- treated group (2,374 $cm^2$$plant^{-1}$) than other treatments. $N_2O$ emission was found to be lower in MAP treated soil than that from FSP-urea treated soil, which might be due to the slow releasing pattern of MAP. It could be assumed from the results that MAP would be an eco-friendly sustainable fertilizer source for crop production.
This research was conducted to clarify the characteristics of electrochemical decolorization of effluent discharged from a biological animal wastewater treatment process and to finally establish parameters or mode for optimum operation of electrolysis system. Average color unit of wastewater was about 1,200 and DSA(Dimensionally Stable Anode) was used as electrode. Experiments were performed with two different operation conditions or modes, fixed voltage-free current(Run A) and free voltage-fixed current(Run B). Color removal rate was proportional to the electrode area and electrical conductivity, and an equation subject to them at a condition of fixed voltage was derived as follows; Ct=C0ekt, k=[{0.0121×a(dm2)× c(mS/cm)}+0.0288], [where, C0: initial color, Ct: color unit after treatment for t, k: reaction coefficient, t: time(min.), a: electrode area, c: conductivity]. From the study on the effects of current density on color removal, it was revealed that the removal efficiency of color was function of the current density, showing direct proportion. However, when considered energy consumption rate, maintenance of low current density was an economical way. Based on the obtained results, it was concluded that supplementation of electrolyte is not necessary for the removal of color from the effluent of secondary treatment process and operation with the mode of free voltage-fixed current, rather than operation with fixed voltage-free current mode, would be an efficient way to increase the removal performance and capacity per consumed energy.

This study was carried out to recover phosphorus in animal wastewater using a magnesium source. $MgCl_2$, as a magnesium source, was shown a SP (soluble phosphorus) recovery rate of 98% in both the aeration and the NaOH tests to adjust pH around 8.5. In case of MgO, the recovery rate of SP were 88% with the aeration and 58% with the NaOH. In case of ammonia nitrogen recovery, $MgCl_2$ was shown the recovery rate of 17% with aeration and 18% with NaOH. MgO was shown the ammonia recovery rate of 18% with aeration and 11% with NaOH. At low temperature of $6-8^{\circ}C$ with the animal wastewater from piglet stall, the recovery rate of SP was shown 95% with NaOH and 92% with aeration using $MgCl_2$. The recovery rate of ammonia nitrogen was shown 9% with NaOH and 12% with aeration, respectively. It was observed that the pH can be raised by aeration. The reaction was completed within 5 minutes and the struvite cristal structure was formed and could be observed with an electronic microscope.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of artificial filaments equipped in the aeration tank of aerobic·fermentation system on the removal efficiency of swine wastes which were fermented an aerobically and thus containing high nitrogen. Two aerobic fermentation system each consist4s of 4 tanks ; storage tank, 1st and 2nd aeration tank and settling tank were run before and one or three weeks after equipment of artificial filament in the aeration tanks. Total solids concentration tended to increase by aerobic fermentation in all running periods. However, decreased(P<0.05) total nitrogen concentration was shown three weeks after the equipment of artificial filament. Ammonia nitrogen concentration also largely decreased(p<0.05) in both running periods of one and three weeks after equipment of artificial filaments. These results suggest that the artificial filaments may improve the removal efficiency of nitrogen in swine wastewater containing high nitrogen during aerobic fermentation.

Solid/Liquid(S/L) separation is crucial for biological treatment of animal wastewater. Liquid portion from S/L separation has less BOD-load and proper post-strip treatment can be obtained . Screen or declined sieve was normally used to separate the solid parts. For better separating efficiency a vibration and a cylindrical separator were constructed and tested. The results are summarized as follows : Solids removal efficiency and moisture content of separated solid were 15-26% and 85-88%, respectively for the vibration separator. For the cylindrical separator, solid removal efficiency and moisture content of solid were 16-39% and 86-89% , respectively. The greatest amount of drymatter was obtained when operating vibration separator with 10。 inclination and 100% vibrating power. For the cylindrical separator maximum efficiency was obtained with 40rpm and 19 inclination . The vibration and the cylindrical separator have shown 21% and 26% in BOD removal, respectively. These two types of separator were proved to be applicable methods for animal wastewater separation.
