Ovarian Activity of Dromedary (Single Humped) Camel (Camelus dromedarius) in North-Eastern Nigeria

  • A total of 69 ovaries were collected from 345 camels slaughtered in Maiduguri abattoir, North-Eastern part of Nigeria, to study the influence of season on ovary weight and corpus luteum count in the dromedary (single humped) camel (Camelus dromedaries). Right ovary was significantly heavier (p<0.01) and had more follicular fluid than the left. Although corpus luteum count increased gradually throughout the study period, no camel had 3 active corpora lutea and only 53 out of the total number had two. Ovarian activity seem to be higher in the cold dry harmattan season, November/December, than during the warmer post rainy season, September/October. These periods can be exploited by farmers, especially peasants who rely heavily on natural mating, to obtain greater conception rates and reduce the chance of failure during mating.

  • Minipigs are regarded as one of the most important laboratory animal in that anatomical and physiological properties are similar to human and their reproduction efficiency is relatively higher compared to other large animal species. Particularly, several diseases that cannot be mimicked in rodent models are successfully occurred or induced in pig models therefore it has been interested in a valuable model for human diseases. Pigs are also 'standard' species in xenotransplantation research. To maximize experimental outcome using minipigs, establishment and management of proper animal facility, right animal husbandry and control of pathogens are very important. In this review, we summarized several international guidelines related with minipigs published by several companies or governments and discuss optimal conditions for providing informative ideas to the researchers who want to use minipigs in their future studies.

Factors to Assess for Re-breeding after Parturition in Milking Cows

  • The purpose of this study was to assess for re-breeding concentrate period in postpartum in milking cows. The 48 cows aged $3.5{\sim}5.5$ years and of $400{\sim}600\;kg$ body weight were examined every 3rd day from 15 to 36 day postpartum. Blood samples for progesterone and estradiol $17{\beta}$ hormone analyses were withdrawn from the coccygeal vein every third day until the end of the experiment. The ovarian follicular numbers were verified and measured using a multi frequency probe. The least squares means are presented for each day by GLM of SAS. The results showed that ovary lengths (right ovary; $1.64{\pm}0.62\;cm$, left ovary; $1.44{\pm}0.46\;cm$) were similar in right and left ovary activity level during estrous cycle of postpartum cows. We were judged completed uterus on day at $2.31{\pm}0.17\;cm$ level of cervix diameter. And we were monitoring started at $6.44{\pm}2.03\;cm$ from day 15 after postpartum. The results showed that mean plasma concentration of progesterone (3.28 ng/ml) in large follicle gradually increased days 30 in postpartum. And, monitoring of estradiol 176 (22.18 pg/ml) hormone during postpartum period would be useful to predict the ovarian and uterus activity for re-breeding in postpartum milking cows. From these results, we conclude that cervix diameter (mean: 2.31 cm) was very important for reproductive organ recovery standard level of postpartum milking cows, hormone secretion level ($P_4$: 3.28 ng/ml, $E_2$: 22.18 pg/ml) and body condition score ($2.5{\sim}2.75$) level about 30 days in postpartum period.

Acute Temporary Visual Loss after General Anesthesia in a Cat (전신 마취 후 발생한 고양이의 일시적인 급성 시력상실 1례)

  • A 2-year-old, castrated male, Scottish fold cat was referred to Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University (VMTH-SNU) for evaluation of acute bilateral blindness after general anesthesia. For dental prophylaxis in local animal hospital, general anesthesia had been induced with intravenous acepromazine and ketamine, and maintained with isoflurane after intubation. At VMTH-SNU on next day, complete blood count, electrolytes and serum chemistry values were within normal ranges. On neurologic examination, visual placing and postural reactions like as hopping, hemiwalking and wheelborrowing were reduced on right hindlimb. On ophthalmic examination, menace responses were absent on both eyes and pupillary light reflex (PLR) reduced on right eye, but other reflex and fundus were normal. Prednisolone (2 mg/kg sid for 3 days) was administrated orally and tapered. Visual placing was possible on 2nd day, and postural reactions were recovered on 4th day after dental prophylaxis. Based on the process and recovery, this case was considered as postoperative visual loss (POVL) after general anesthesia.

  • Caval syndrome is a life threatening condition caused by heavy worm burden in right cardiac chambers including right atrium, right ventricle, and vena cava and results in mechanical interference in tricuspid valvular excursion and blood flow to lower pulmonary arteries. A mechanical worm removal is the choice of option for treating this condition in dogs. In this study, we developed a new mechanical worm removal method using modified extraction brushes for treating dogs with caval syndrome. With this newly developed method, we successfully removed heartworms in two dogs with caval syndrome. Although the number of cases applied was small, authors found this method can be a good alternative retrieval method for mechanical worm removal in dogs.

Discal Cyst in a Malamute Dog (말라뮤트 개에서 발생한 디스크 낭종 증례)

  • A 7-year-old, male Alaskan malamute was referred for a routine dental management. On the physical examination, the right hindlimb ataxia with a mild delay in proprioception was noted. On magnetic resonance images, an extradural ventral cystic structure compressing the spinal cord was found at the level between the first and second lumbar vertebra. The cyst showed hypointense on a T1-weighted image with rim enhancement and hyperintense on a T2-weighted image. The cystic lesion was removed through right-side hemilaminectomy. In the histopathological examination, evenly distributed fibroblasts and collagenous stroma with several cartilaginous materials were seen. The neurological signs of the right hindlimb were successfully recovered within a week in follow-up neurological examination and showed normal gait at 6 months after surgery.

  • Muscle protein synthesis in vitro was measured in chicks fed low-protein(10% CP) and control(20% CP) diets. Right leg muscles (M. gastrocnemius) were mounted on a support made of stainless steel to stretch in constant tension, whereas left leg muscles were unmounted. Both leg muscles were incubated in Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium including L-[$4-^3H$] phenylalanine for 60 min to measure in vitro protein synthesis. There was no significant difference in fractional synthesis rate(FSR) of muscle protein between both dietary protein levels, whereas FSR with stretch in constant tension was significantly higher than that without constant tension due to an increase in the absolute synthesis rate(ASR) per unit RNA(the efficiency of RNA to synthesize protein). The ASR of muscle protein in chicks fed the control diet was significantly higher than that in the low-protein diet group.

Influences of Anesthetics in term of Computed Tomography Bronchial Lumen to Pulmonary Artery Diameter Ratio in Beagle Dogs (비글견의 컴퓨터단층영상에서 기관내강과 폐동맥 직경비율의 마취제에 따른 영향평가)

  • Bronchoarterial (BA) ratio is a commonly used criterion to define airway dilatation despite the lack of normative human and animals. The objective of our study was to compare the range of normal bronchial to accompanying arterial diameter ratio with previous reports on CT scan of the thorax in dogs and assess influence anesthetics on BA ratio in dogs. Dogs undergoing multidetector CT scan of the chest for nonpulmonary conditions at a single center were prospectively identified. High-resolution reconstruction was performed on those included and both airway lumen and vessel diameters were measured in the lobar bronchi of the left cranial (cranial and caudal parts), right cranial, right middle, left caudal, and right caudal lung lobes. Eight dog were included; Mean of the mean BA ratios was $1.43{\pm}0.24$ (95% CI = 1.36 - 1.50) in inhalation anesthetic group. In propofol group, the mean of the mean BA ratios was $1.13{\pm}0.29$ (95% CI = 1.04 - 1.22). In medetomidine group, the mean of the mean BA ratios was $0.89{\pm}0.19$ (95% CI = 0.83 - 0.95). Comparing individual lobes within anesthetic category, there was no signicant difference in mean BA ratio between lung lobes or between dog according to inhalation, propofol, and medetomidine group (P = 0.630, P = 0.878, and P = 0.508, respectively). The BA ratio in these clinically normal dogs was consistent and may be a useful tool in evaluating for bronchiectasis on CT images. However, some different criteria for bronchiectasis were applied by the anesthetic methods.

Foramen Magnum Decompression with Duraplasty Using Lyoplant® for Caudal Occipital Malformation Syndrome in a Dog

  • A 3-year-old castrated male Maltese dog, weighing 4.8 kg was referred with hindlimb ataxia and right forelimb proprioceptive deficits were shown for 20 months. Chiari-like malformation and syringomyelia diagnosed through MRI at a local animal hospital and Knuckling of right forelimb and reluctance to walk were managed with steroid. The medical management was getting ineffective to manage for the symptoms one month before referred. Physical and neurological examinations, radiography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging were performed and diagnoses of caudal occipital malformation syndrome (COMS) and subsequent syringomyelia (SM) were made. Given that pharmacological treatment was previously ineffective, surgical intervention was recommended. Foramen magnum decompression with duraplasty using $Lyoplant^{(R)}$ was performed. Three days post-surgery, the dog showed improved gait and activity. After 2 months, the dog received no additional prescription medications. At the 12-month follow-up after surgery, the dog showed no clinical problems or recurrences, despite complete cessation of pharmacological treatment. In present report, we applied $Lyoplant^{(R)}$ as a dural graft has been carried out in a dog with COMS. Surgical decompression with $Lyoplant^{(R)}$ was an effective long-term (12-month) treatment for COMS without the need for any pharmacological treatment.

Primary Pulmonary Hypertension in a Maltese Dog (말티즈 견에서 발생한 원발성 폐동맥 고혈압증)

  • A 1-year-old castrated male Maltese dog(weighing 2.4 kg) was presented with primary complaints of occasional coughing, dyspnea and exercise intolerance. Based on diagnostic findings including paradoxical split S2, diastolic regurgitant murmur, marked dilation of pulmonary artery, right ventricular eccentric hypertrophy with thickening of ventricular septum, severe tricuspid and pulmonic regurgitation(5.4 m/sec and 3.4 m/sec, respectively) and the absence of any congenital intracardiac shunting, obstructive pulmonary diseases and systemic diseases associated with right ventricular pressure overload or pulmonary hyperperfusion, the case was tentatively diagnosed as primary pulmonary hypertension. The dog was treated with furosemide, aspirin and oxygen supplementation. This case report described a rare case of primary pulmonary hypertension in a Maltese dog.
