Two New Species of Oribatid Mites(Acari: Oribatida) from Korea

  • Two new species of oribatid mites, Dicastribates tenuisetosus sp. nov, and Liacarus unjangensis sp. nov. are described from Korea. Dicastribates tenuisetosus sp. nov. is easily distinguishable from a single known species, D. heterotrichus (Mahunka, 1984) from Paraguay by the presence of 14 pairs of distallv attenuate notogastral setae, the smooth rostral and lamellar setae, the relatively short and distally attenuating interlamellar setae, the relatively short sensilli with distinctly clavated head, and presence of two and six setae on epimeral region III and genital plate. Liacarus unjangensis sp. nov. can be easily distinguished from most other known species by the very wide lamellae which cover dorsally whole prodorsum, the presence of equal sized inner and outer teeth of lamellar cusps and the minute rostral, lamellar and interlamellar setae.

A Study on the Agricultural Student's Perception of Sustainable Agriculture (농업계 대학생의 환경농업인식에 관한 연구)

  • The objectives of this study were to categorize agriculture, to analyze perception of sustainable agriculture and to suggest the directions for improving farming practices in Korea. This study was conducted by review of literature and mail survey. The data was collected from 225 purposively sampled agricultural students by questionnaire. Major findings of the study were as follows; 1) According to the respondents, sustainable agriculture may bring positive effects on the betterment of land conservation, water management and animal protection. 2) The respondents expected that the sustainable agricultural practices may diminish the use of agricultural chemicals and increase safe agricultural products. 3) Sustainable agriculture needs more labor power, however, the number of small and middle-size farms in Korea would not be increased. 4) Even though the price of sustainable agriculture products increases, the respondents expected that rural economic condition would not be much improved because of sustainable agriculture. 5) Agricultural students responded that number of farmers in sustainable agriculture would be increased in the future.

  • A infrared rays sensor or ultrasonic sensor can detect the object at the narrow area, however a pressure sensor can detect man and animal at the wide area. It is necessary to manufacture the sensor by using Pb-free ceramics in the respect of environmental protection. Piezoelectric properties of ceramics added 0.2wt% $La_2O_3\;into\;0.96Bi_{0.5}(Na_{0.84}K_{0.16})_{0.5}+0.04SrTiO_3$ were 0.4 of kp, $31{\times}$10^{-3}Vm/N\;of\;g_{33}$. The output voltage of the pressure sensor is 0.48 V at 20 in$H_2O$. The output voltage of the pressure sensor with driving circuit is 9.8 V, 37 ms width.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the types and symbolic meanings of the pattern shown in the Korean traditional houses. The major findings were as follows, 1) The patterns shown in the Korean traditional houses are classified into the types of the animal, plant, good-luck geometry according to the Motifes 2) The patterns of the Korean traditional houses were expressed in the fences, gates, chimneies, walls, windows and doors, railings, roofs. 3) Korean traditional patterns are expressed the meanings of the protection, long life, good-luck, good meaning, decoration in the fences, gates, chimneies, walls, windows and doors, railings, roofs.

  • Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), an octane booster that is added to the reformulated gasoline, has been a widespread contaminant in aquatic ecosystem. MTBE is a recalcitrant pollutant having low biodegradability. Due to its higher water solubility and low octanol-water partition coefficient, it can be rapidly transported to the surrounding water environment. Also, MTBE is a known animal carcinogen, and is classified as a possible human carcinogen by U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. The adverse effect of MTBE to aquatic biota was widely reported. In Korea, the recent detection of MTBE in groundwater near gasoline filling stations has drawn concern to public health and ecosystem. To address this concern, the effect of MTBE to human health and ecosystem was discussed in this review. Also, ecotoxicity data of MTBE for fish, invertebrates, and algae were extensively compared to estimate the hazard concentration 5($HC_5$) of MTBE as a screening level.

  • The mammalian immune system comprises a complex array of cells and molecules that interact to provide protection from pathogenic microorganisms. The beneficial role played by lactic acid bacteria and milk-derived peptides in humans, including their effect on the immune system, has been extensively reported. Lactic acid bacteria and milk-derived peptides, which are present in dairy products, are frequently used as nutraceuticals to improve some biological functions in the host. Activation of the systemic and secretory immune response by lactic acid bacteria and milk-derived peptides requires many complex interactions among the various constituents of the intestinal ecosystem. Thus, the aim of this review was to examine in detail the immunological potential of lactic acid bacteria and milk-derived peptides.

  • The vocal fold has three major function-phonation, respiration and protection, and is richly innervated. The vocal 1314 its autonomic innervation-adrenergic and cholinergic from superior cervical ganglion and the vagus nerve, respectively. The action of both system account for vasoregulation and glandular activity. In e vocal fold several kin of neuropeptides, including SP, CGRP, VIP, TH, NPY, ENK have been reported at the animal including cat or dog. But information regarding the distribution of autonomic nerve fibers containing neuropeptides in the human vocal fold is lacking. Two neuropeptides are of special interest : 1) vasoactive intestinal polypeptide(VIP)that is known to be contained in the parasympathetic(cholinergic) neuron. 2) tyrosine hydroxylase(TH)is located in the cytoplasm of noradrenergic neuron and is the rate-limiting enzyme in noradrenaline synthesis. To understand specific autonomic function of vocal fold we did immunohistochemical examination of VIP and TH in the human vocal fold.

A Study on the Consumers' Perceptions of Fair Tourism Experiences (공정여행 경험에 대한 소비자인식 연구)

  • Recently, interest in fair tourism and demand for this service has been steadily increasing. This study examined the tourists' perceptions of their fair tourism experiences. Phenomenological method was adopted as a qualitative research approach. Participants were nine adults who were interviewed in depth on their experiences of fair tourism. Data analysis led to the emergence of seven categories (sharing and volunteerism, environment and animal protection, tourism created together, communication and relationship, from consumption to experience, ethicality and fairness, contemplating life) and 21 subcategories. This research was a significant step in providing options to explore the improvement of ethical-tourism and may have implications for the future development of tourism. This study also has various implications for tour operators, consumers, and government. In future all stakeholders should make efforts to establish the tour culture which encourages consumers to consider the ethicality and fairness of their choices as tourists.

Pharmacological and medical applications of Panax ginseng and ginsenosides: a review for use in cardiovascular diseases

  • Panax ginseng, also called Asian or Korean ginseng, has long been traditionally used in Korea and China to treat various diseases. The major active ingredients of P. ginseng are ginsenosides, which have been shown to have a variety of therapeutic effects, including antioxidation, anti-inflammatory, vasorelaxation, antiallergic, antidiabetic, and anticancer. To date, approximately 40 ginsenoside components have been reported. Current research is concentrating on using a single ginseng compound, one of the ginsenosides, instead of the total ginseng compounds, to determine the mechanisms of ginseng and ginsenosides. Recent in vitro and in vivo results show that ginseng has beneficial effects on cardiac and vascular diseases through efficacy, including antioxidation, control of vasomotor function, modulation of ion channels and signal transduction, improvement of lipid profiles, adjustment of blood pressure, improvement in cardiac function, and reduction in platelet adhesion. This review aims to provide valuable information on the traditional uses of ginseng and ginsenosides, their therapeutic applications in animal models and humans, and the pharmacological action of ginseng and ginsenosides.
