  • The estimation of variance components or variance ratios in linear model is an important issue in plant or animal breeding fields, and various estimation methods have been devised to estimate variance components or variance ratios. However, many traits of economic importance in those fields are observed as dichotomous or polychotomous outcomes. The usual estimation methods might not be appropriate for these cases. Recently threshold linear model is considered as an important tool to analyze discrete traits specially in animal breeding field. In this note, we consider a hierarchical Bayesian method for the threshold animal model. Gibbs sampler for making full Bayesian inferences about random effects as well as fixed effects is described to analyze jointly discrete traits and continuous traits. Numerical example of the model with two discrete ordered categorical traits, calving ease of calves from born by heifer and calving ease of calf from born by cow, and one normally distributed trait, birth weight, is provided.

  • Blends of pork meat (20%), defatted soy flour (25%), and corn starch (48.61~53.71%) were prepared with or without additional non-meat ingredients, i.e., onion powder (1%), alone or in combination with carrot powder (1.5%) or extract (1.5%), or defatted oat flour (5%). All blends were formulated for 22.78% moisture, with water added where necessary. They were extruded using a laboratory single-screw extruder at 16$0^{\circ}C$ profess temperature and 170 rpm screw speed. The additional ingredients generally decreased product expansion and increased bulk density and shear force. When the product with no additional ingredient and the product with onion powder were evaluated by trained sensory panelists, \"grain complex\" was the most intense flavor note for both. With 1 % onion powder in feed, a distinct \"onion\" flavor note was detectable in extrudates. All the products may be considered \"healthful\" based on nutrient profiles.t; based on nutrient profiles.

  • The aim of this study was to assess the associations of some potential risk factors and occurrence of calf mortality in large-scale dairy farms. Njoro area of the Rift valley, Kenya was selected due to its potential of large-scale dairy farms, since the time of the Europeans settlers. The study was retrospective and focused on the calves dying from January 1996 through October 1998. Sample of studied population consisted of 105 calves extracted from the farm records. Data was collected using a questionnaire and were grouped into farm-level and animal-level factors. Calf mortality was 15.6% and important risk factors for calf mortality were sex of calf, season of birth, pneumonia disease, age of dam when calf was born and house type for calves. Female calve born during colder wet seasons and born to dams of 2-4.5 years of age were equally at higher risk. Calves raised in movable pens compared to those raised in permanent pens were at higher risk of mortality from pneumonia. Animal level factors were major causes of calf mortality in commercial farms used in this study and therefore details study is needed in these factors in controlling the calf mortality rates.

  • A notodontid moth, Disparia diluta (Hampson, 1910) is reported for the first time from the Korean peninsula. At the same time, taxonomical note for D. nihonica (Wileman, 1911) is given. The male genitalia of D. nihonica (Wileman) were erroneously illustrated as those of Neodrymonia delia (Leech) by Tshisjakov and Kwon (1999), and Schintlmeister (2008) cited D. nihonica (Wileman) to be distributed in the Korean peninsula, based on the illustration.

  • Soy isoflavones have drawn much attention due to their potential to prevent breast and prostate cancers, osteoporosis, heart disease, and other postmenopausal symptoms. Soy germ is one of the richest sources of isoflavones, and thus has good potential to be used as the ingredient of health foods. This study examined the extraction rate of isoflavones from soy germ at various conditions. After the effect of extraction temperature and duration on isoflavones extraction from soy germ was examined, the optimum concentration of ethanol as extraction solvent was determined. When ethanol concentration was fixed at $60\%\;(v/v)$, the maximum isoflavone extraction was achieved at 2 hrs and $30^{\circ}C$. Among various concentrations of ethanol tested, $80\%\;(v/v)$ ethanol showed the highest extraction efficiency. In conclusion, the maximum extraction of isoflavones was obtained using $80\%\;(v/v)$ ethanol as a solvent, at $30^{\circ}C$ of temperature, and 2 hrs of extraction time.

  • This study aimed to investigate the function of the constitutively activating mutation D540G on eel FSHR activity by in vitro functional studies. Site-directed mutagenesis was carried out to generate the D-to-G mutation at position 540 of the pcDNA3-eel FSHR construct. Vectors expressing either wild type or mutant receptor were transfected into Chinese hamster ovary (CHO-K1) cells. The functional characteristics of both the wild type and mutant receptors were analyzed by a cAMP assay. cAMP accumulation was highly increased in cells transfected with the D540G mutant receptor in a dose-dependent manner. Of note, basal cAMP levels were remarkably increased (~13.1-fold) with expression of this mutant when compared to wild type receptor. These findings suggest that the D540G mutation in the eel FSHR may contribute to ovulation during eel sex maturation as well as play a pivotal role in inducing FSHR activity.
