  • When structures undergo rotating motion, their modal characteristics often vary significantly. The variations of modal characteristics are determined from their geometric shapes and their rotating angular speed. Since the modal characteristics vary during the operation of the structures, they should be carefully scrutinized. In this paper, rotating cantilever beams are chosen as design targets which need to meet some specific design requirements. The thickness and the width of the rotating beams are assumed as multi-stage spline functions and the stage values for the thickness and the width are used as design variables for the optimization problems.

  • There have been many studies on the two dimensional thermo-elasto-plastic analysis in welding process, mostly from viewpoint of residual stresses. In this study, the temperature distribution, transient thermal stress, and angular distortion during bead-on-plate gas metal arc welding of rectangular plates were analyzed by using the finite element method. A nonlinear heat transfer analysis was first performed by taking account of the temperature-dependent material properties and convection heat losses on the surface. This was followed by a thermo-elasto-plastic stresses and distortion analysis that incorporates the constrained boundary condition of the two dimensional solution domain to get the three dimensional size effect of the plate. The constrained boundary conditions adopted in this study were the constant displacement condition over the whole two dimensional section for axial movement in the welding direction, and the force boundary condition for rotational movementof the domain around the axis of the welding direction. It could be revealed that the theoretical predictions of the angular distortion have an improved agreement with the experimentally obtained data presented in the previous study.

  • The article deals with the problems of application of microwave methods in systems of geoecological monitoring of natural environments and resources of the agro-industrial complex. It is noted that the methods of microwave radiometry make it possible, by the power of the measured intrinsic radio-thermal radiation of the atmosphere, when solving inverse problems using empirical and semi-empirical models, to determine such parameters of the atmosphere as thermodynamic temperature, humidity, water content, moisture content, precipitation intensity, and the presence of different fractions of clouds. In addition to assessing the meteorological parameters of the atmosphere and the geophysical parameters of the underlying surface based on the data of microwave radiometric measurements, it is possible to promptly detect and study pollution of both the atmosphere and the earth's surface. A technique has been developed for the analysis of sources of measurement error and their numerical evaluation, because they have a significant effect on the accuracy of solving inverse problems of reconstructing the values of the physical parameters of the probed media. To analyze the degree of influence of the limited spatial selectivity of the antenna of the microwave radiometric system on the measurement error, we calculated the relative measurement error of the ratio of radio brightness contrasts in two angular directions. It has been determined that in the system of geoecological monitoring of natural environments, the effect of background noise is maximal with small changes in the radiobrightness temperature during angular scanning and high sensitivity of the receiving equipment.

  • When a cantilever beam rotates about the axis perpendicular to its longitudinal axis, its natural frequencies vary. This phenomenon which is caused by centrifugal inertia forces is often referred to as the stiffening effects. Since the variation of natural frequencies often creates critical problems for the rotating structures, it is necessary to control the variation of natural frequencies. As the cross section of a rotating cantilever beam varies, natural frequencies can be changed. The thickness and the width of the cantilever beam are assumed to be cubic spline functions in the present work. An optimization method is employed to find the optimal thickness and width of the rotating beam. This result can be used for the design of rotating structures such as turbine and helicopter blades.

  • Scattering of obliquely incident plane electromagnetic waves by an isotropic plasma coumn which is moving uniformly in the perpendicular direction to its axis is treated analytically on the basis of Lorentz transform and boundary conditions. The scattered field, the total scattering cross-section, the rader cross-section, and the angular distribution of the scattered power for the incident plane waves polarized arbitrarily are derived to find the function of the moving velocity of the plasma column and of the angle of the incident plane waves and to find the scattered field of the H-waves more distinguishable than the E-waves.

  • This paper proposes a tilt sensor made by MEMS technology. The sensor consists of an electrode glass a small mercury drop a circular channel and a cover glass. The mercury drop is used as medium of a current flow and in contact with two circular chromel electrodes used as an angular-motion resistance When this sensor inclines the mercury drop inside the circular channel moves into the bottom under the influence of gravity. A tilt angle can be measured by changed resistance as tilting this sensor, This sensor has a linear section between +50.$^{\circ}$ and -50.$^{\circ}$ with the accuracy of 2.$^{\circ}$. We are also studying about the enlargement of the linear section and the effect of the size of the mercury drop.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the punching movement at the horseback riding stance, one of the basic movements in Taekwondo, with 3D images and further the kinetic variables such as time, velocity, angle, angular velocity, and angular acceleration according to the types. It also aimed to examine the characteristics of each type and suggest instructional methods for the right punching movement. For those purposes, three members from the College Taekwondo Poomse Demonstration Squad were put to the test. The research findings led to the following conclusions: 1. Performance Time of the Punching Movement : In Section 1, Type 1 and 2 recorded $0.24{\pm}0.07s$ and $0.42{\pm}0.08s$, respectively, for the punching movement at the horseback riding stance. While Type 1 took less performance time in the punching movement, Type 2 took less time for take back according to each section's percentage in the total performance time. 2. Variables of Linear Velocity and Linear Acceleration : Each type recorded different linear velocity for each aspect, but the highest linear velocity represented the moment of impact for each type. Type 2 recorded the highest linear velocity in Aspect 4, which was the moment of impact. 3. Variable of Joint Angle : There were no big outer differences in the joint angle during the punching movement between Type 1 in the aspect of impact and Type 2, but the individuals assumed dynamic positions in the punching movement of Type 2 with more diverse changes to the joint angle. 4. Variables of Angular Velocity and Angular Acceleration During the punching movement of Type 1, the Aspect 3 in the moment of impact recorded angular velocity of $0.79{\pm}0.02deg/s$, $0.91{\pm}0.04deg/s$, and $5.24{\pm}0.09deg/s$ at the pelvis, shoulder, and wrist respectively. During the punching movement of Type 2, the Aspect 3 in the moment of impact recorded angular velocity of $1.32{\pm}0.03deg/s$, $0.21{\pm}0.03deg/s$, and $4.98{\pm}0.08deg/$ at the shoulder, wrist, and pelvis, respectively. In the Aspect 3 in the moment of impact in Type 2, the angular acceleration at the right wrist joint was $176.24{\pm}1.11deg/s^2$, which was bigger than that in the moment of impact in Type 1.

  • In this paper, a study on the optimization of fuzzy classifier using radar cross section(RCS) values is presented to classify shell-shaped targets. Method of moments(MOM) is exploited to construct RCS database of generic shell-shaped targets in uniform angular intervals. Relative orientations are estimated from various flight scenarios of shell-shaped targets, and associated RCS values are interpolated from the generated RCS database with uniform angular intervals. Initial membership functions are determined using the interpolated RCS values, and particle swarm optimization(PSO) is utilized to optimize the membership functions of the fuzzy classifier in terms of probability of correct classification.

  • Objectives: This study is designed to evaluate the mechanical stability of orthodontic mini-implants with vertical grooves in rabbits. Materials and Methods: This study was done from March 2011 to February 2012 in Dental Research Institute of Seoul National University. Thirty-two mini-implants in the control group and 32 in the rotation bump (RB) group were inserted in the tibias of 16 rabbits and were removed after two weeks and four weeks, respectively. The maximum insertion torque (MIT), maximum removal torque (MRT), torque ratio (TR) of MRT to MIT and removal angular momentum (RAM) were all measured at the time of removal. Results: There were no significant differences between the two groups in MIT and MRT at two weeks or four weeks. However, TR and RAM at four weeks in the RB group were significantly higher than in the control group (P<0.05). TR of the RB group was significantly increased at four weeks (P<0.05). In both groups, RAM at four weeks was significantly higher than at two weeks (P<0.05). Conclusion: These results suggest that RB of the mini-implant could provide resistance to the removal rotation, although it did not increase the MRT.

  • This study is focused on analyzing the deformation types of seaside armor stones based of field survey in order to establish the cause of abrasion following the deformation of seaside armor stones. 1. The deformation of seaside armor stone in saemangeum sea dike was classified as three different types: floating, deviation, and abrasion. 2. It was discovered that the stones floated to the extent of maximum 50 m, as the result of inspecting floating stones which were situated on different ten places. 3. The average number of deviation in the high ocean wave section was four times more than that in the ordinary ocean wave section, as a result of comparing the deviation number of the ordinary ocean wave section and that of the high ocean wave section for the purpose of inspecting the relation between the deviation of armor stones and the effects of ocean wave. 4. The angular shape of armor stones seen in the initial construction period has been abraded smoothly, as result of comparing of the shape change of armor stones for the purpose of inspecting abrasion state of seaside armor stones. 5. It was discovered that the abrasion of armor stone was severe in the section of many floating stones, as a result of analyzing the levels of abrasion and the cumulative sections of floating stones for the purpose of investigating the cause of abrasion.
