Application of a Boundary element Method to the Analysis of ultrasonic Scattering by Flaws (경계요소법을 이용한 결함의 초음파 산란장 해석)

  • Numerical modeling of a nondestructive testing system plays an important role in many aspects of quantitative nondestructive evaluation (QNDE). The ultimate goal of a model is to predict test results for a specific flaw in a material. Thus, in ultrasonic testing, a system model should include the transducer, its radiation pattern, the beam reflection and propagation, and scattering from defects. In this paper attention is focused on the scattering model and the scattered fields by defects are observed by an elastodynamic boundary element method. Flaw types addressed are void-like and crack-like flaws. When transverse ultrasonic waves are obliquely incident on the flaw, the angular distribution of far-field scattered displacements are calculated and presented in the form of A-scan mode. The component signals obtained from each scattering problem are identified and their differences are addressed. The numerical results are also compared with those obtained by high frequency approximate solutions.

Deformation Characteristics of Intermittent Fillet Welding (단속 필렛 용접의 변형 특성에 관한 연구)

  • As is well appreciated, welding is the most important fundamental process in manufacturing marine structures. However, weld-induced deformation is inevitable because of the non-uniform distribution of temperature during welding. The deformation caused by welding is one of the principal obstacles in enhancing the productivity in the manufacturing procedure for marine structures. This should be much more seriously considered in the case of the thin blocks found in a ship with multi-deck structures. This paper is concerned with the deformation control of thin panel blocks by applying intermittent welding to fillet welding. In order to investigate the quantitative effect of the intermittent welding, a thermo elasto-plastic analysis was carried out with various welding pitches and plate thicknesses. Welding tests were also carried out to show the validity of the present thermo-elasto-plastic analysis. Numerical analysis results showed good agreement with those of the welding tests. As far as the present numerical results are concerned, it has been seen that a more than 50% reduction in angular distortion can be achieved by applying the intermittent welding because of the low heat input.

Effects of RF Pulsing on the Ionization Enhancement in Ionized Magnetron Sputtering (RF pulsing이 Ionized Magnetron Sputtering의 이온화율 향상에 미치는 효과)

  • The ionized magnetron sputtering is very useful in filling of small metal contact or via in ULSI processing with very high ionization upto 80% based on incoming flux ratio. But fairly high sputtering gas pressure is required to get high ionization, which instead gives low deposition rate and diverse incoming neutral's angular distribution. The electron quenching by heavily sputtered metals and gas rarefaction were considered the main causes of decreased ionization in this process. RF pulsing of sputtering power was proposed to solve those two problems. The results showed that 10㎳/10 ㎳ and 100㎳/100 ㎳ of on/off pulsings were optimal pulse conditions from OES measurements and also XRD of deposited Ag film showed distinct change of (111) to (200) preferred orientation. These results were analysed in a view point of neutral gas heating and cooling by high power sputtering.

A Study on Swirl Flow and Combustion Characteristics of Air Staged Low NOx Burner (다단 공기 공급 저 NOx 버너의 선회유동 및 연소특성에 관한 실험적 연구 - 다단공기공급에 의한 연소특성(I) -)

  • The objective of this research is to determine generally applicable design principles for the development of internally staged combustion devices. Utilizing a triple annulus combustor, the detailed combustion characteristics are studied. For this triple air staged combustor, the angular momentum weighted by it#s swirl number and air distribution ratio was observed to be the critical criteria of NOx emission. An internal recirculation zone which develops on the centerline of the flame immediately downstream of the burner entraps the fuel into a fuel rich eddy. Then sufficient heat must be transferred from the flame via radiation to the chamber heat transfer surfaces, such that the peak flame temperatures are suppressed when the second air is introduced. It is experimentally found out that the total NOx emission level in this type of burner is below 50ppm(3% Ref. O2) at optimum operating conditions.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to determine vertical fixation disparity by Fixation Disparity Card. The purpose of this study was to investigate distribution of the curve types obtained with Wesson card. Methods: Fixation disparity curves were measured on 52 subjects with the Wesson fixation disparity card. A fixation disparity curve was an x, y coordinate plot of the angular amount of fixation disparity as a function of the power of prisms through which the patient views. The fixation disparity curve variables that were used to aid in the diagnosis and management of binocular vision disorders included the x-intercept, y-intercept, curve slope and curve type. Results: Vertical fixation disparity curves by Wesson Fixation Disparity Card were very various. Conclusions: Vertiical fixation disparity curves could be used to aid in the diagnosis and prescription.

The fixation disparity curve variables that are used to aid in the diagnosis and management of binocular vision disorders include the x-intercept, y-intercept, curve slope and curve type. Fixation disparity curves were measured on 102 subjects with the Wesson fixation disparity card. The purpose of this study is to investigate distribution of the curve types obtained with Wesson card. Fixation Disparity by Wesson Fixation Disparity Card were that in case of type I 63.0%, in case of type II 0.0%, in case of type III 25.0% and in case of type IV 12.0%.

Multiple Hologram Recording and Retrieving Through Analysis of Exposure Time Schedule (노출 시간 계획 분석을 통한 다중 홀로그램 기록 및 재생)

  • In this paper, we analyze several exposure time schedules to obtain uniform multiple hologram and measure the diffraction efficiencies of holograms stored in $LiNbO_3$:Fe(0.015wt%) crystal through experiments. The minimum angular selectivity and the intensity ration of two incident beams are investigated precisely by the high resolution system(minimum angle : $0.0028^{\circ}$). Considering initial recording time, total exposure time and time constants, the efficiency distribution(0.014 ${\pm}$ 0.005%) of 100 holograms is measured and the 330 analog images are recorded in the same place. Also, total 500 holograms are retrieved by spatial multiplexing.

  • In this paper, we derive analytical expressions for the exact pairwise error probability (PEP) of a space-time coded system operating over spatially correlated fast (constant over the duration of a symbol) and slow (constant over the length of a code word) fad­ing channels using a moment-generating function-based approach. We discuss two analytical techniques that can be used to evaluate the exact-PEPs (and therefore, approximate the average bit error probability (BEP)) in closed form. These analytical expressions are more realistic than previously published PEP expressions as they fully account for antenna spacing, antenna geometries (uniform linear array, uniform grid array, uniform circular array, etc.) and scattering models (uniform, Gaussian, Laplacian, Von-mises, etc.). Inclusion of spatial information in these expressions provides valuable insights into the physical factors determining the performance of a space-time code. Using these new PEP expressions, we investigate the effect of antenna spacing, antenna geometries and azimuth power distribution parameters (angle of arrival/departure and angular spread) on the performance of a four-state QPSK space-time trellis code proposed by Tarokh et al. for two transmit antennas.

  • Research interest in three-dimensional multiple-input multiple-output (3D-MIMO) beamforming has rapidly increased on account of its potential to support high data rates through an array of strategies, including sector or user-specific elevation beamforming and cell-splitting. To evaluate the full performance benefits of 3D and full-dimensional (FD) MIMO beamforming, the 3D character of the real MIMO channel must be modeled with consideration of both the azimuth and elevation domain. Most existing works on the 2D spatial channel model (2D-SCM) assume a wide range for the distribution of elevation angles of departure (eAoDs), which is not practical according to field measurements. In this paper, an optimal FD-MIMO planar array configuration is presented for different practical channel conditions by restricting the eAoDs to a finite range. Using a dynamic network level simulator that employs a complete 3D SCM, we analyze the relationship between the angular spread and sum throughput. In addition, we present an analysis on the optimal antenna configurations for the channels under consideration.

Submillimeter Observations of the Infrared Dark Cloud G049.40-00.01

  • Infrared dark clouds(IRDCs) are believed to be the progenitors of massive stars and clusters. We obtained 350 and 850 ${\mu}m$ continuum maps of the IRDC G049.40-00.01 using SHARC-II on CSO. Twenty-one dense clumps were identified within G049.40-00.01 based on the 350 ${\mu}m$ continuum map with an angular resolution of about 9.6". We present submillimeter continuum maps and report physical properties of the clumps. The masses of clumps are from 50 to 600 solar mass. About 70% of the clumps are associated with bright 24 ${\mu}m$ emission sources indicating protostars. The most massive two clumps show enhanced, extended 4.5 ${\mu}m$ emission representing on-going star forming activity. The size-mass distribution of the clumps suggests that many of them are forming high-mass stars. G049.40-00.01 contains numerous objects in various evolutionary stages of star formation, from pre-stellar clumps to H II regions.
